Tell Me What You Like About John McCain

I used to like McCain quite a bit, but in the past 2-3 years, I have observed a distinct change in him from a man who stood up and spoke out for what he believes in to a man who repeats the party line and in my eyes has pretty much become a mouthpiece for the current administration and their goals...

So, tell me. For those of you who might or are going to vote for him, what do you like about him, his politics and his platform?

I don't really want this to be a debate thread, but I would really like to hear from McCain supporters. Thank you!

I was never a McCain supporter but at this point he is all that's left.....for obvious reasons I would never vote for a democrat....so, as I said, gotta vote for McCain........not voting is a vote for the dems in my eyes......and they are not getting my vote.......all our military family members and military friends will be voting for McCain......

    • Gold Top Dog

Same as Snowrose here - It's not that I actually agree with all of McCains views - but I shudder to think what would happen if Hil or Obie was elected and would never vote for either one of them.

Personally, I will only vote for McCain if he gets a good running mate, but I will never vote for Obama or Hillary.  I can not vote for someone I can not be behind, and none of the canidates put forth by either party are ones I can support.  I used to think that if I didn't vote, it would be a vote for the "wrong" side, but in the ellection I am not sure who the right side is.  Neither seem right for me.   Maybe some random conservative will run third party.

McCain is not my choice but I will be supporting him. As far as what I like about him well I do think he has some integrity and character. I respect him without agreeing with all of his politics. He is a loyal supporter of the military and has seen combat himself so I have faith that he can lead us as far as the war goes. I think he will do a better job of listening to our military leaders. I also think he is the one out of those who are running that I would feel best at peace with as far as foreign policy goes.

Yikes, you guys are about as strong an endorsement as the Dems were for Kerry! ("Well, at least he's not The Other Guy!";) Stick out tongue

     McCain on the issues.

Areas where I support 100% are in bold, out of the items that are not in bold I see nothing that I am against but will need to read more on the details in order to endorse. I am not sure if I care on way or another on the space program.

Straight Talk on Health System Reform
John McCain is willing to address the fundamental problem: the rapidly rising cost of U.S. health care. Bringing costs under control is the only way to stop the erosion of affordable health insurance, save Medicare and Medicaid, protect private health benefits for retirees, and allow our companies to effectively compete around the world.

    Strict Constructionist Philosophy
John McCain believes that one of the greatest threats to our liberty and the Constitutional framework that safeguards our freedoms are willful judges who usurp the role of the people and their representatives and legislate from the bench. As President, John McCain will nominate judges who understand that their role is to faithfully apply the law as written, not impose their opinions through judicial fiat.

Human Dignity & the Sanctity of Life
During more than five years as a POW in Vietnam, John McCain experienced the worst assaults on human dignity imaginable. Yet each day he also saw in his fellow prisoners the power of human compassion and the will to prevail against unimaginable evil. It is this experience, and a life dedicated to public service, that has imbued in John McCain a fundamental commitment to the protection of human dignity that will shape his presidency.

    Lobbying & Ethics Reform
John McCain believes that a government "of the people, by the people, and for the people" must remain ever faithful to that noble charge. America needs leadership devoted to the public interest, not the special interest, and a government that fulfills its duties with unfailing integrity, accountability, and common sense. Those who serve in positions of public trust have a patriotic duty to serve the national interest with integrity and accountability, to conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the people we are privileged to serve, and to devote ourselves to America's agenda, not that of narrow special interests.

John McCain believes that we must not fail in Iraq. Succeeding in the cause of helping the Iraqi people build a stable, secure, representative state is essential to achieving an enduring peace in a region of the world central to American prosperity and national security. Failure in Iraq will endanger America for generations to come. America has a vital interest in a secure, democratic Iraq, at peace with its neighbors, to help stabilize a dangerous and critical region.

    Border Security & Immigration Reform
I have always believed that our border must be secure and that the federal government has utterly failed in its responsibility to ensure that it is secure. If we have learned anything from the recent immigration debate, it is that Americans have little trust that their government will honor a pledge to do the things necessary to make the border secure.

Commitment To America's Service Members: Past And Present
America owes its liberty, its prosperity, and its future to our veterans who have dedicated their lives to protecting our great country. John McCain has fought to honor our national commitment to our veterans who have given their careers and livelihoods to ensuring our freedom. He believes we must provide for service members and their families while they serve, we must help those who return from combat to adjust to civilian life, and we must honor and never forget the service of those who do not return.

    Protecting Second Amendment Rights
John McCain believes that the right of law abiding citizens to keep and bear arms is a fundamental, individual Constitutional right that we have a sacred duty to protect. We have a responsibility to ensure that criminals who violate the law are prosecuted to the fullest, rather than restricting the rights of law abiding citizens. Gun control is a proven failure in fighting crime. Law abiding citizens should not be asked to give up their rights because of criminals - criminals who ignore gun control laws anyway.

First and foremost, and let me admit right now that I have a big soft spot in me for veterans, he is a combat veteran and a war hero. It was one of the things I admired about Bush Sr. There is something about laying your life on the line for your country that changes you and means something. Someone can come along and pick that all to pieces and I don't care.

Secondly, I think he has learned to control his temper. He used to speak from the cuff and got misinterpreted so many times. Some may see that as selling it out but it may simply be a sign of learning how to negotiate by what you say and how you say it.

I appreciate the commitment to the 2nd amendment, even though I don't own a gun. I used to own one. And I want the freedom to own again, if I so choose. America cannot stay strong by surrendering freedoms.

Iraq is turning into another Korea. And even though we have kicked out a despicable despot, it has done nothing to stabilize the oil market. To be fair, quite a bit of our gas price is taxes. And our government is putting in another 50 cents.excise tax. 10 cents at a time to avoid pump shock. North Texas will be paying $4.00 a gallon by the end of summer. Some of that is to pay oveirnflated contracts to paving companies that know how to milk a cow dry. A section of 45 near Corsicana has been under construction for more than a decade. But I don't see how reorganizing Iraq is going to stop terrorism. The best way to stop terrorism is to quit buying gas from the middle east. In order to do that, we would need to develope our own resources. As well as those we could get from mining in space.

So, the Iraq thing and oil prices are going to hurt the Republicans chances. So, we are left with the two democractic choices and I won't mention my opinion because I know others are reading and I will hurt some feelings.

He is not a socialist.  I think the Democratic Party would be much better served if they stop bringing up the ultra-left wing of the party for Presidential candidates.

I think you're right.  I know some life-long Democrats down at the local rod and gun club who would never switch their party affiliation...yet they say they same, haven't voted for a democrat in many years because they just don't offer up their kind of candidate...all ultra-libs?

One thing I hope McCain would do is get away from this greenhouse gas political legerdemain.

The actual science of climatology and how the atmosphere operates are not defined by Al Gore and others, they are defined by laws of physics, which results in a negative feedback which acts like a control. I am for clean air. And the cleanest, cheapest source of electricity is coal. The cleanest, cheapest source of fuel is what we call gasoline. And we have trillions of gallons in reserve. We have the Gulf of Mexico. We have capped wells here in Texas.

I don't want McCain being puppeted by the lobby groups. But I don't want him to be puppeted by oil, either.  I think the next person that says we can't drill our own oil should be treated as a traitor to this country.

By the way, most companies that deal in oil are energy companies. It wouldn't matter if they dealt in oil or ethanol. So, it's not the oil companies that are keeping us from ethanol. The problem with ethanol is that it is more expensive to produce and would create as much or more problems as we have with oil. Energy companies would love it if we could just "grow" our own fuel at home. Then, they could set their own prices and OPEC would become a non-entity and our energy companies could keep more profit. And the main reason our energy companies have to buy from outside the country is because they are not allowed by government influenced by a few lobby groups to produce our own fuel resources. That is, if you charge 3 dollars a gallon and you had the choice between making your own fuel at a cost of 2 cents a gallon or you had to buy it at 2 dollars a gallon, which would give you greater profit? So, energy companies are not against ethanol. The crappy return ratio in power given for money spent is what is against ethanol. It was a beautiful pipe dream and needs to die a fitful death.

I want McCain to understand all that and act accordingly.

Ben Stein had a very interesting report on Oil Companies

    http://finance.yahoo.com/expert/article/yourlife/2973

    Some high lights are:

"The energy companies don't set the price of oil or of gasoline. The prices you pay for heating oil or gasoline aren't set in boardrooms in Texas but in trading rooms at commodities markets all over the world."

"So, when prices go up or down, it's not a conspiracy. It's panic or confidence in the market. It's just like what happens on the stock markets every trading day -- greed or fear at work, not at the companies being traded but on the exchanges. The oil companies can either lose or gain from this trading."

another interesting point was made by Glenn Beck a couple of days ago. Who is Big Oil? It is us.

    http://members.tripod.com/schmookler/lib/whosinch.htm

"Who owns Exxon? The answer, in a way, is both nobody and everybody. It is "nobody" in that no single person owns as much as 5% of the company. Exxon, the lineal descendent of Rockefeller's Standard Oil, is nobody's baby. It is "everybody" in that more than a third of the company is owned by institutions like pension funds. There is a good chance, if you are a working American, that you own a little bit of Exxon."

Three cheers for this quote! I agree 100%!

More. It already is as grocery prices are skyrocketing due to the price of corn. The cost to get ready to  pump it into cars at all gas stations is huge, and that cost will be passed on to us. Meat goes up since cows eat corn, bread goes up, milk goes up, eggs go up and what is amazing to me is even if we went 100% ethanol and stopped using oil other countries such as China will surpase all our green house gas emmissions and the world will really be no better off as far as emmisions go,except Americans will be taxed higher and will pay higher prices for goods.

Had to comment on that - Hillary is a very moderate Democrat, as was her husband, who took a lot of heat from his party for not being liberal enough. Anyone who thinks Hillary is a "far left liberal" has been paying too much attention to right wing pundits instead of reading and researching for themselves. In fact, I'm not sure I've heard of ANY Democrat described by the likes of O'Reilly/Limbaugh/Hannity/Coulter, et al, as anything but "far left".
