    *update* Dogs die March 7th

    I'm so sad/mad/disappointed right now.

I am on the listserv for the Michigan GSD rescue.  A few months ago, we received an e-mail from a vet who had someone boarding two adult German Shepherds at her facility and then abandon them.  Both I and the rescue contact her, asking for more info, pictures, etc. and we never got a response.  Yesterday, she sent another e-mail saying she's now had them 90 days and she will euthanize them on March 7 unless someone pays $350 a piece.  She specifically stated he will not release them to a rescue.

I wrote her back saying that we do not have $700, but I will gladly drive 2.5 hours each way, pick up the dogs on March 7, and transport them to a shelter that will NOT euthanize them for space.  Oh and I would have to pay to put them in the shelter b/c they require a mandatory minimum donation of $25 per surrender, even if you are bringing in a stray or helping someone else's dogs.  I have seen adult GSDs at this shelter and they never last more than a week or two.   They are fairly adoptable, especially two like this with no known health problems and no behavior problems.

Go figure, I never get a response back, even though she's threatening to euthanize the dogs next week.  I e-mailed the rescue president and she gets the same type of responses (or no response) - she refuses to let them go without $350 each.

It just boggles my mind.  Next Friday they die.  They have to pay for their euthanasia and disposal. They would rather kill them himself than let me come get them?  I offered to wait until next week and give them the chance to get the $700 (yeah right).  Why did she not release them to a shelter or rescue right away?  As for re-couping costs, she can take the owners to small claims court.  She is taking this out on the dogs and they are paying with their lives.  She says they already have some sores and are 10% overweight from being caged for 3 months.

Say goodbye to Sheeba and Dakota...

can you post his phone number or address or email or all so that we can bombard him with calls? If not please send me a private PM as I have a lot of contacts in GSD rescue here on the west coast and one of them is very active. She will get the word out and assist in convincing this guy to release there dogs to a rescue.

    • Gold Top Dog

Oh, man, I don't have the money.

Does anyone here?  I would be willing to go get them if someone could come up with the cash (like give the vet the money and I would go pick them up).  I could make a good story about how I am looking for two GSD's to add to my family blah blah blah and then find homes for them from a rescue here.  Does he have them listed anywhere, or is there someone I could say I know who knows someone who knows him and let me know he had the dogs?  There's got to be something we can do!  This is outrageous!  (And hits even closer to home for me because of Monster being gone and my inability to adopt a dog of my own right now.)

I think I'm going to go cry.

Are you sure this is legit? It just seems odd that he's sort of holding them ransom for the money and will put them to sleep but won't give them to a rescue group. Why not? He's not going to get any money if he puts them to sleep. Hard to imagine someone in the field of helping animals is that heartless, but I've been surprised/disappointed before.

i wish i had the money to help out even though he doesnt deserve it he should just hand them over sounds more like greed then caring. its rather unfair to those two ill keep them in my heart and hope things work out for the best

Donna, I will PM you all the contact info I can get.

The dogs have been repeatedly posted on the MIGSD listserv and I have two threads on the rescue forum of the GSD board.

I believe it is legit because he has posted to the listserv about these dogs before.  The timing is correct.  They also provided photos and some medical information and behavioral info about the dogs.

I think they are just so out of touch, she honestly thinks she'll get $350 for "purebred" GSDs.  They don't realize we have a dozen or so already available in southern Michigan.  I and several other people have already offered to pick them up March 7th and transport them, but we simply don't have $700, and honestly it's difficult to raise that when the rescue already has dogs needed medical attention that is not paid for.  Typically, no shelter or vet ever requires a legit rescue (as in one that has legal status) to PAY to pull a dog.  They hand them over because a legit rescue knows how to market and place these dogs.  She cut off her own foot by keeping them this long.  They've had minimal exposure, so of course no one has adopted them.

Or...get up a new email account (does he know you on sight?) and see if the rescue would cover his fee, then go up and get them under a different name (like your first name and your mom's maiden name, or your first and middle names).  Act all excited that you finally found the two perfect dogs, and you've been looking for a pair for ever so long.  See if he takes that bait.  Then either pay in cash or have the rescue buy one of those prepaid VISA card things.

To make it even better...post something on craigslist about the dogs...saying that you heard that they were available at this vets office and even though you couldn't afford to rescue them you wanted people to know that they were looking for a home.  Then take the printout with you when you go.  *waggles eyebrows*

The basic thing you have to worry about is the cash, though, unfortunately.

This is how the corrospondence has gone:

    To whom it may concern,

I am a licened Veterinarian, who has boarded these to abandoned dogs for >90 Days, and am trying NOT to have to destroy these two beatiful GSD's.

Both dogs abandoned > 90 days ago, have boarded here and are cage-broken and approx 10% overweight from reduced activity. Minor cage-wear of elbow contact points, otherwise healthy.

Vaccines all current; no history of heartworm status.

Both dogs immunized for the following vaccines in-order to board:
       dhlpp corona bordetella rv1  fecal-neg

    Adoption fee:  $350.00 per dog

--This covers vaccines, boarding exams and boarding services including 4 walks/day x 90+ days!  and FOOD. These fees dont cover my personal expenses invested in saving these animals.

I can no-longer keep these animals; they will be euthanized Fri March 7 at 5pm if they are not adopted.

The adoption fee is to cover above costs, and to make sure SERIOUS OWNERS only apply to adopt them. No exceptions, and this includes any rescue groups.

The owners contacted us right after Christmas, and it looked as though they would take them, and to avoid legal-ramifications of adopting them, we waited for them to respond.  Unfortunately, they never responded and have given us permission to adopt them.

    SPECIFICS:

    Sheba
    Black & tan  Female, spayed  100#  4y 6.1 mos
shy & cautious; leash and house-broken; no obvious bad-habits

    Dakota
    Tan w/black saddle   Male neutered 120# 5y 3.1 mos
noisy, cautious; leash and house-broken; use metal bowls

Please contact me at this email with any questions.

    Dr.C

    To which I responded:

    Dr. C,

If you do not receive $700 by March 7th I can move these dogs to a local shelter that will NOT euthanize for space (even owner surrenders).  I do not have $700 to spend on dogs, but I can surely move them to a new facility where they will be given a chance.  I volunteer at this facility and have never seen an adult GSD available for more than a week.  They get adopted relatively quickly and are not in danger of being euthanized.  If no one offers to buy them, surely this is better than putting them down....

    [my sig]

And the MIGSD rescue president also responded:

    Hello Dr C,

We were forwarded this being a GSD rescue.  I am sure something could be done for these dogs...but not sure who is going to come up with $700 to "bail them out" or adopt them.  Our own adoption fee is $250, and being a rescue we certainly are not making money.  But there are families looking to adopt dogs, its a lot to ask others to pay $700 (maybe $350) if that is what the family owes, they should be sent to claims court.

Ah, right, the money.  You got that last post up when I was typing mine.  Well, I thought my idea was a good one.

    Crap.

    • Gold Top Dog

    This really sucks.

One question though:  How could the original owners have given permission for the vet to adopt the dogs out if they never responded to him?  If he means that his email said "if you don't respond I will adopt the dogs out", I'm not sure that's legal, though admittedly I don't have much knowledge of US law.

I am not sure, but I believe there is a time limit for abandoned dogs.  Two weeks is off the top of my head...could be wrong though.  I've seen this happen before, sadly, just never seen a vet insist on getting PAID to help the dogs find a new home.

Angry All I can say is if "Dr. C" was my vet, I'd be looking for another one.

This is so sick and sad!!! This "vet" obviously does not give a damn about animals. It makes me wonder if he even uses humane euthanasia methods. This is another representation of animal abuse, IMO. If he were a caring vet/human being, he would be happy to see that someone out there wants to give these dogs a chance at a happy life and let them go!!!!!

My first inclination was to ask for contact info as well, but he is obviously hell bent on taking his frustrations out on these poor souls, so I don't want to provoke him any further. Aren't there laws that protect these animals in any way from just being put down like that????? I will never understand some people!!!!!!! AngryCrying

    • Gold Top Dog

This really pisses me off.  Can you prove he knows he has someone who will take the dog and he won't give the dog up without getting paid? I would think that his actions would be considered unethical by his fellow vets, wouldn't you?

So, why not go after his license? and at the very least see him censured....

http://www.michigan.gov/mdch/0,1607,7-132-27417_27529_27555-59195--,00.html The vet. board is part of the MI public health department.

Here is a list of its members---do any of the rescue folks know them?

    http://www.michigan.gov/mdch/0,1607,7-132-27417_27529_27555-42807--,00.html

Maybe someone could speak with one of these people and find out the best way to proceed.

Might want to let the jerk know that a formal complaint is being filed against himDevil.

    • Gold Top Dog
I would threaten to contact the press about it.  I would not go to a vet that did something like that, and I am sure there are others who feel the same.  Maybe loss of business would make him reconsider his decision.
