oh, do help. is it somewhat bad if a puppy ingests blood?

    and not regular blood.
    please understand my euphemism.
i think it would slightly irk people if i were to specify what my puppy has taken the liberty to rummage through and thoroughly bite.
hopefully my attempts at being tactful have gotten my point across without being too offensive.

if anybody has knowledge in this area, i would appreciate ot know if i should take my puppy to the vet.
if not then i suppose i'll have to... as evil as she is it would be terrible if she died and/or got an infection.
    that wouldn't be fun.

    help?

Most people on this forum have pretty thick skin - and it would probably be more helpful if you explained exactly what happened.

If it's anything too horrific, simply edit your original post and put "Warning - Graphic" so that people with queasy stomachs can steer clear.

So feel free to explain what happened, and the responses will be a lot more helpful.

hardly too horrific, i would assume people here to be adults (though i myself am not) and aware of what happens to femals once every month.

my very evil puppy somehow got into my bathroom... she enjoys ripping up paper.
    *sigh*
i'm afraid she may have ingested some of the blood that was on some of the paper in the waste paper basket and i fear that she will become sick.

hopefully, that will act as a better description.

    I see.. lol.
It's not the first time this has happened to someone (or some puppy) [:)]

Do you know how much of it she ingested? And I'm assuming this was a pad?

I'm sure someone will have better advice than I have, but I think your dog will be fine.  None of my dogs or my friend's dogs who have been in the same predicament have ever gotten sick.  Just make sure you keep the bathroom doors closed or teach your dogs to stay out of the trash.

Dogs eat the grossest things (dog poop, cat poop etc) and still seem to survive.  Just keep an eye on your puppy (who isn't evil [;)]) to make sure she doesn't get into the bathroom again.

It is possible for a dog to get a blockage if a significant amount of pad or tampon is eaten. After all, these things are made to swell up and block passages. But all of my dogs who have done this chewed them first and pooped them out in big pieces later. [:D]

I don't know if the gel in pads is poisonous. I would find out asap. I have had dogs eat both or parts of both and all was fine.

I tried googling on this subject but got nowhere!

Yep, thats what I was thinking too.

My dogs have all done the same thing, over the years. A full tampon is much less of a danger than an unused one.

That's about the extent of my knowledge on the subject. My dogs have no interest in unused tampons[:'(]

I would think that the gel in pads is silica gel. The same as those little packets that come in shoes that say Do Not Eat. My thought is that this may dehydrate the pup if anything, so just make sure he has lots of water to drink.

Oh and don't be embarassed. I doubt there are very many of us on here that havent had a treasure pulled from the bathroom garbage or a pair of worn undies placed nicely in companies laps. It goes with the territory of owning dogs. Live and learn.

Diaper's (disposables) have the same thing lol. My pups have eaten some of the stuff in them and have been fine. Not HUGE amounts tho.

Your puppy should be just fine.  Although I think a little bit constipated for about 3 days. Plus you'll be picking up some interesting poos.  Bogey has done this 2xs, pads and tampons and not just one day but empty the garbage time!  After 2nd time he was banished forever from the bathroom.  IMO once they have a taste for blood they will find a way to get. I also keep the bathroom door closed, no use testing my/our luck![&:]   PS Bog has no interest in other kinds of garbage!  Also used tampons/pads have most likely done all the swelling they can handle before entering the dogs body..................

Alas yes - many of us have had this happen.  But imagine it happening when you have visitors .... "hey mom , looky what I have !".  YIKES
I now walk all the used items to the kitchen where I have a metal covered pail. One of these days I'll get smaller versions of that pail for the bathrooms.

Sorry, just saw this thread late :) Just wanted to add that blood is notorious for causing nausea and vomiting when a lot is ingested as well, especially when you aren't used to it (that's why bad nose bleeds cause nausea since some goes down the esophagus too). It's probably too late now, but you may want to keep him confined for a few hours in an easily cleanable area like a bathroom so you don't get stuck with blood stains on nice carpet [:D]
