Cookies always go over SO well -- particularly for the family in transition with no time to eat together and rushing everywhere.
Don't know how 'big' the baby is -- are we talking tiny baby or toddler? Big enough to hold crayons or not?
Print out a big old picture of Pirate for her wall at the hospital first off!! And then I'd do a cuddly toy dog -- anything soft that can go right in the crib with her. (washable is probably better)
Then ... for a child who will be in the hospital for a while don't do it all at once. The picture of Pirate first. Then after a couple of days a picture and then some words to read to the baby "Pirate says get better quick!!!" and then another few days and maybe a small book from the dollar store with a dog on the front.
MANY small cheap presents -- just to stimulate interest and conversation and "LOOK what Pirate sent you NOW!!!" - If you have $10 to spend do it in a dollar store and get lots of stupid little things -- anything colorful, anything just interesting FOR TODAY.
Because parents get tired. They may WANT to bring something with them every time and just plain don't have the time to do it. So leaving something attached to their door (just a bag from Publix slung over the doorknob) with something inside to take WITH them the next time they go to the hospital can mean so much.
So take that printed picture of Pirate, roll it up and tie it with a ribbon. Nothing has to be wrapped fancy -- just get it over on that door so they don't have to do a THING but take it with them. They'll appreciate it so much.
And if you have time to bake cookies or shoot -- even an old DVD you like + a bag of chips and a couple of cans of pop -- let them refrigerate it ... but just having something to come home to will be a relief to the parents. And having someone THINK of them will be the most precious thing of all.
So bottom line -- ANYTHING you do -- whether 1 thing or 5 ... is a blessing to these folks. There is nothing worse than having a baby sick, I don't think. It's wearng and it's hard and it's stressful.
