    Is it wrong of me?

To want a velcro dog?  I knew what I was getting into when I got my huskies.  They are very independant and while they like to keep me in sight, I have to be very selective as to when and where they are off leash.  Normally, this isn't a big deal to me.  I love that about them in fact.  I love that they can make the call as to whether we should go onto the ice or not, instead of just blindly following me, and that sort of thing.

BUT, every once in a while, I wish I had one of those dogs that stick to my side no matter what is going on.  One that thinks I'm the most important thing in the world and shows it.  A dog that will just walk out the door with me without me having to worry about putting a leash on.  One that will not bolt out of the car door if he manages to get his belt undone.  My friend has GSD's and 2 of them are like that so far, the other is just a little pupper so its too early to tell.  The guy that lives across from my Mom and Dad has a Boxer like that.  Lately I've been a little jealous of that.  Is that wrong?

Did you ever wish you had a dog that was different from the ones you currently have?

Well, that's why I have the malinois.  Aside from wanting one-large-dog-that-barks, it's nice to have a dog I can have off lead.  I love my basenjis and would rather that than any other breed, but, well, it's nice to have a dog that validates you as a trainer.  Smile

No, it's not wrong and yes, sometimes I do wish that.  Now, at some point we'll get another dog (and it will be a different breed) so I might get the chance to have a different kind of personality.

It doesn't mean you love your dogs (or in my case, dog) any less, or that you don't appreciate what makes them the kind of dogs they are.  The grass isn't necessarily greener on the other side....but it's just as green and has a different view, if that makes sense.

I don't think it's wrong! I love that Rupert is a velcro dog. He keeps me company and we love to snuggle. Sometimes I feel bad that he wants to be everywhere I am, though. Like if we're laying on the couch together, then I have to get up and go downstairs to get some laundry. I tell him he can stay, I'll be right back, but he still gets up and follows me downstairs.

This is the exact reason that I didn't get another husky. I love huskies - however, I've had enough of that run away mentality. So, when I looked for another breed to get I wanted a dog that can go all day like a husky but one who is also velcro. That's how I ended up with 2 aussies.

Yes, the mal does this.  Of course, if I go to the bathroom, everyone has to go with me.  Tongue Tied  I figure they think since I go out with them when they go . . .

And basenjis are very cuddly, especially when it's cold.  (Think I'm being used?)

Yes...that's why Cleo is here! You need a Leo, Candace...what's one more large hairy beast?

    Diversity!

I love Sasha, but she is not cuddly. I need cuddles! Enter Mr. Eko. He's my lap cat.

Time will tell, but he also seems more velcro than Sasha. That isn't hard to accomplish, though!

I quite agree Gina.  And a Newfie, and a Saint, and a Dane, and a Bloodhound, and a Mastiff, and and and.....LOL.

Oh I so need a place in the country.

I SO know what you mean. Sofia will sometimes flop over my lap when I'm in bed, but it's a stiff, rub-my-tummy thing, not a cuddly thing. She's not a cuddle dog, she's not even all dog, you know? She's special, she's gorgeous, she's brilliant and she's dog-not-a-dog. It's one reason I miss Stevie the rottie/dobie SO MUCH. He was SUCH a cuddler, all 75 lbs of him! We'd sleep back to back all night, he could form himself to fit right against my back. Meanwhile, Sofia has prickly porcupine/coyote hair......and she won't sleep on the bed but rarely.

Enter Ole. He follows me everywhere. If I get up to pee at 2am he follows me to the bathroom and guards the door. Right now as I type I have to watch that I don't put my feet on his head! He cuddles, he's a mushball and a noodle. Yep folks, Elkhounds might be a northern breed but they are major cuddlers! df

edited to add: And Elkhounds are only 50 lbs, max!

If wanting a velcro dog is wrong, I don't wanna be right! That's one thing I love about my GSDs. When we come home and walk in the door, my husband is real careful to not let them step outside (even though the front yard is fenced), but I once told him, "Let them go" and they ran out and immediately followed him back inside. LOL

everybody knows I love the Bugster BUT he is not a cuddler at all. He will not come over to you to lay on you ( might be a good thing) if you are on the floor and he comes over it will be to wrestle or play.  He can be a bit velcro but only a tiny bit.  And whereas I don't think under normal circumstances he would take off when you open the car if there was a dog, cat, mole, rabbit, bird - OK you get it - he is tough to contain.  I had to buy a station wagon in order to take him in the car because he is so squirmy he would get out of the seatbelt harness and be all over the car.  He is very independent and not handler focused, he would love nothing more than to take his morning walk/run by himself and has never seemingly been concerned that myself or DH are out of sight.

I could definitely see myself getting a playmate for him that was more handler focused and softer.

Its not wrong. I love my Bear to death. But I adopted him when he was already 1. And he has always been very "moody" and skittish...due to previous abuse. The "moodiness" is probably part of the reason we click so well... as I tend to be so myself...and we tend to be a lot alike...sometimes I just want to be left alone and sometimes he just wants to be left alone... and we both know how to leave each other alone. :) But its also frustrating when (and I don't know) he gets nervous for no reason and hides and won't come out. Or when he thinks I am being intimidating (again I don't know why) and gets scared. I wanted a dog that I could raise so that there was no issues with past abuse and being nervous or scared. And thats how I ended up with Taz.. and now Athena. I love my Bear (and probably favor him a bit)... buit its nice to have one I have known since the begining. Plus... Bear is all of 12lbs and not too scary. I really wanted a bigger dog that would not BE mean but have a bark that would scare off the people I don't want around... such as the guy that came pounding at my door at 6am for 20 mins and shined lights in my window... only to find out he was at the wrong address.

Thanks everyone.  I was feeling kind of traitorous if you will.  Its NOT that I want to be rid of my current dogs.  I don't for sure.  They won't leave my home until the day they leave this world.  And I would never neglect their needs.  But once in a while I would like to go for a walk with a dog and not have to be on constant lookout for distractions, or constantly be checking collar position and my hold on the leash.  Or checking my own body language so that my big dog doesn't get freaked out and feel he needs to protect me.  And imagine being able to bring in groceries without having to juggle things at the door each trip.  Mind you I guess I'd still have to do that cause Crusher and Onyx would still be here.

You know, Onyx could almost be that dog.  Almost but not quite.  If she gets out, I know I can call her back, but I can't just let her out and expect her to be there.  She does take off.  She comes back when called, but she has no need to be right at my side.   So if I'm not paying attention she could get into trouble.

Not at all. I love velcro dogs too. Kaiser fits that description perfectly. And yes, it is awesome to not have a dog not bolt without a leash. The other day actually, Kaiser and i were playing chuck-it. Well, i guess i chucked the ball into a rabbit's hiding spot and the rabbit took off. So Kaiser went after it. I gave one, really loud yell and he immediately ran back to me. I was so impressed.

Wyatt is half velcro. He goes where i go, no matter what, but i do not let him off leash. And he is most definitely the most cuddly dog i've ever owned!
