They sure do have some strange (to us) laws...

It's a kind of dumb country to try to make a political statement in ... it's pretty well known that  Islam considers dogs to be unclean/impure.  Just not a place I'd try to make any sort of public statement -- not a 'free' country -- if it were a woman the penalty would have been more harsh!

I've often wondered why Islam considers dogs to be impure.

And I wonder if this will change...?

I honestly don't know why Islam considers dogs to be impure, but I doubt it will change. We used to live quite close to a mosque, and I was actually spat on by a group of Muslim men as I walked by with my Shepherd mix. Nevermind this is the USA and they must respect the laws of a free country Angry Islam is a religion that seems to beget violence so as long as it reigns in the middle east, there will be problems such as this :(

Dogs are considered impure in Islam, because they used to be scavengers and they still are in third world countries. In those countries dogs are basically four legged garbage disposals. They eat everything including fecies and dead bodies . They also often carry rabies. Here in States my muslim neighbors don't have any problem with my dog and the guys pet her too. Women are just a little bit scared.

In one of the articles that I read it stated that dogs many dogs were being taken from their owners and killed while their owners spent time in jail. The same article also stated that the religion is cited as the reason for their distasted for dogs, but that, in fact, it is not cited anywhere in their religious text. One of the reasons given for the scourge is the fact that many of dog owners in Iran are treating their pets as Americans do, i.e., dressing them and making them part of the family....... Just repeating what I read.......sorry I don't have the article to post here. So happy to be American.

I have muslim friends, one from Egypt and one from Palestein and they own a dog. The only thing they do not like about dogs is when they lick you. According to them you can pet dogs but if they lick you then you are unclean and have to cleanse yourself.

There dog lives inside and sleeps on the couch.

Mind you they have become americanized so their views would not apply in the middle east

Historically, Islam has been less violent than Christianity. In the current time and age, there is a movement within Islam that encourages violence. That is a very different thing than Islam as a whole encouraging violence. Which it doesn't.

I guess this explains why this is not the case in Malaysia. That country is overwhelmingly Islam, yet dogs are considered treasured pets. I mean, you can buy dog food there so dogs are not scavengers roaming the streets as they apparently are in parts of the Middle East..

the anti-dog thing and the anti-women thing both appear to be lovely traits of the middle east, not anything to do with the religion.

But Salukis are a gift from Allah and treated as such, at least by the Bedouins.  (They are highly valued.  They sleep in the tents and are never to be sold, only given as gifts.)

I dont get it at all.God created dogs, just as he did people,i dont understand any 'religion' that condemns one of Gods creatures, and there is afterall only one God!

I often  see Muslims whilst out walking my dogs and i refuse to make a bee line around them or to indulge this ridiculous IMHO mindset, especially when they act like a pack of rabid killer wolves are about to eat them. I just tell them not to worry and that my dogs are extremely friendly and very clean.

If they are going to move to a country of known animal lovers and where there are dogs everywhere then they should be prepared to accept our laws/interpretations etc etc
