I rescued a Viszla

Oh my gosh, that POOR POOR DOG!! The girl that owned him should be prosecuted for animal abuse and cruelty. It makes me livid when people turn crates into animal abuse devices. [:@] How could she possibly, by any stretch of the imagination, feel that it was okay to leave her dog for DAYS at a time locked in a crate with no food or water!!!?? Sorry, but that just has me boiling mad.

On another note, I'm so glad that the girl's father talked her into finding the dog another home and that you have him now. He's a really beautiful Viszla!!

I love viszlas too.  They are great dogs, so full of life, yet so cuddly and soft.
Even after Ty gains some weight he should always look pretty slim, my little dog looks huge next to my friend's viszla.  Getting those nails back in shape will take some time.  Oh, what a lucky boy he is now.
Wow, look at those beautiful eyes.

What a horrible situation. That lady should be hung by her toenails over a crocodile pit. Thank you so much for rescuing this poor boy.

Sorry, but I just had to LOL at such a creative punishment!! [:D]

What a lucky dog!  What a a lucky windfall for you!  He's a beauty.  I wish there was somewhat to insure that this girl will never purchase another dog.

I also have an appiontment to get him neutered and all his vaccinations done next week.

THANK YOU for rescuing this poor fellow!!  That woman should never own another pet.  There is something wrong with her mind.

Especially since this dog is malnourished and underweight, you might want to reconsider getting vaccines and a surgery on the same day.  Vaccines are an assault on the immune system and his immune system status is questionable right now.

Please see Dr. Dodds' minimal vaccination protocol:

Please also see Dr. Roger's chart on vaccines and the duration of immunity:

If this dog had his puppy shots (Do you have his medical records?), then there is a very, good chance that he has lifetime immunity to Parvo, Distemper, and Rabies.  You could then titer to evaluate the immunity to Parvo and Distemper with no reason to rush to get him those vaccines.  Do not allow them to give him a big combo shot of a lot of vaccines - ever!  (Be sure all vaccines are free of Thimerosal.  It contains mercury.)

The rabies vaccine is very hard on a dog.  It should not be given within 3-4 weeks of any other shots and certainly not on the day of surgery.  If the vet says that it is required before surgery to "protect his staff", call him on that because it is ridiculous.  The original puppy shot series probably gave the dog lifetime immunity to rabies and, if it didn't, the vaccine would not be effective for at least 10-14 days.

I do hope that your area allows the 3-year rabies shot.  That time frame is a compromise by the AAHA and others.  Some localities still have laws requiring a yearly rabies shot, but that is medically unnecessary.

Here is some info on pre- and post-op care:
[linkhttp://www.dogaware.com/misc.html#opcare]www.dogaware.com/misc.html#opcare[/link]

Be sure to get the pre-surgery bloodwork to verify that the kidneys and liver can handle the surgery.  There is no telling what malnutrition has done to those organs.

Ask that your vet not use Rimadyl either during surgery or as part of post-op care.  I consider Rimadyl a pain drug of last resort. This site describes some of the problems that dogs have had with Rimadyl:

Here are some suggestions on how to get a very safe spay. Much of it also applies to a neuter.

What a cute face!

It's hard to tell from those photos, but he doesn't look TOO terribly underweight- a little ribby, but mostly just lacking in any muscle tone.

Good luck with him! :)

You are a wonderful person to take this neglected creature into your loving care. I'm sure that he is so very happy to have you! I think that this person should be punished for something like this. How about locking her in solitary confinement in a tiny broom closet just tall enough for her to stand up and turn around with no meals and no water for a few days. Let her sit in her own excrement for a day or two and I bet that she'll change her tune about how she treats animals...

Thank you all for your support and advise!!! [:D]     I like the hanging by her toe nails over a croc piy, idea! [:)
I had his nails trimmed but since they were so long we could only do the very tips and we will have to clip them a little bit at a time until they look more normal, but he doesn't even mind getting his nails trimmed! He sat perfectly still and gave his paw out!  From what I was told by this womans dad, Ty had his shots over a year ago but since his daughter has moved around a few times she has misplaced his vet records and he has no tags, so Im not getting his booster done right now Im only going to get his Rabies done because its the law here that he has not only a rabies tag on at all times but I also have to be able to show the paper work from the vet that he had a rabies vaccination done if ever got out or bit someone (God forbid). We do have a 3 year wait on the rabies IF the dog has had a rabies shot for 2 years in a row, then it  can skip 3 years until he needs another one.  But I don't have any of  his vet records or tags to prove it only there word and I wouldn't be suprised if she lied about getting him his vaccinations.
This womans dad is making us have a week "trial period" with Ty, to see if everything works out here and he is good with my kids and other dogs. I can understand that but at the same time I can't imagine having to send him back there, I would be devastated for Ty. So Im trying my hardest to make sure it works here, I don't care what it takes, but thankfully Ty is pretty much perfect and Im thinking it was meant to be.

He's beautiful and very lucky to have you. Congratulations :)

Oh yeah! When her dad brought Ty over he told me he had told her, What if I locked you up in a tiny cage all day and night with no food or water and didn't let you out to go to the bathroom? and she told him that it wasn't the same and crates are good for dogs and he told her, No its a crate if you leave him in there for only a couple hours because you had to go to work or somewhere shortly but you have him living in a cage because you never let him out! I am VERY happy that her dad made her give him up.

I knew it! When someone else mentioned that maybe the girl would change her tune if she were locked in a closet with no food or water for a few days, I KNEW that this girl is one of those people who wouldn't make a connection. She'd think it was "just" a dog and a possession more than a being with feelings and needs just like a person. She's definitely the type of person that shouldn't be able to have ANY living creature.

Her dad seems like a really decent person and I bet he's been shaking his head wondering what went wrong with his daughter. [&o]
