Boiling water is ok, as long as you don't have toddlers around to knock it over/(put back away from little paws and hands) and get severe burns. Any way to provide moisture to the dry winter air...between heating the house and the dry cold air..It does a number on healthy mucous membranes, nevermind the irritation with illness. And the vapo rub is actually quite good and my kids loved to have that put on their chests, soothing and helping with those irritated coughs, opening things up to feel much better. Some of those old remedies are the best..lemon and honey tea, salt water gargle from the grandmother's time are highly effective for older kids as well.
We buy the humidifiers at the pharmacy, cheapo ones can be as low as $15. We have been through a bunch of them. Elements in the water corrode the heating element. They are actually good even when there is no sickness.
Good luck! It is tough when the wee little ones are sick, but it is a great reason for extra love and cuddles!!
