William is poorly

    Coo coo

Hey William, hurry and get better so that you can be the bright, happy boy it those pics.

As well as being sick he has quite a bad chesty cough, a VERY runny nose, conjunctivitis, diarrhoea, you name it.  I hadn't even got to the bus stop this morning after dropping him off to nursery and I got the call to say I had to come and pick  him up again.  The staff had gone to change his nappy and he was basically covered in it from his bum to his shoulders.  Then he started being sick and couldn't stop.  So we went straight to the doctors from there as it was open surgery.

The doctor confirmed that Will didn't have a blocked tear duct.  He listened to his chest and said he sounded very rattly.  He said he had an infection and prescribed antibiotics for it and also drops for his eye because the last lot didn't clear it up.

We went round to the chemist and picked up his prescriptions before we went home so he could start the course straight away. I stocked up on calpol and teething gel while I was there and got a syringe because I was struggling to get him to take the medicine off the spoon (he doesn't want to eat or drink ANYTHING, when something comes towards his mouth he screws his face up and waggles his head).  When we got home he had fallen asleep in the pushchair so I let him snooze.  When he woke I laid out all his medicines on a tray with a dish of boiled water and some cotton wool for his eyes and nose.  He was such a little soldier, I cleaned him up (he was caked in snot from his eyes and nose, bleurgh) and gave him his drops and gave him his medicines... he sat there with the muslin tucked round his neck, tilted his head back and drank all the doses down.  Then we had a looooong cuddle and I ran him a nice warm bath so he could get clean after his Puka-a-thon this morning... he even managed to have a little bit of lunch and watered down juice and IT STAYED DOWN (hooray!) and then he slept for about 3hrs!

He wasn't as good about taking the medicine tonight before he went to bed, but once it was done he leaned against me and his eyes just started shutting... which is a mark of how bad he feels because he prefers to lay in his cot and squirm around and chat to himself for a bit to go to sleep.  I couldn't get him to drink his milk or put him in his sleeping bag or anything, he was just too tired and I think the medicine makes him drowsy too.  So now he is in bed and sleeping really deeply, which is good news because the last couple of nights he has been very restless.  I'm taking that as a sign the medicine is working....

Thanks to everyone for thinking of him and wishing him well.  And thank you for all the lovely compliments Smile

I hope the medicine helps quickly and he feels better in the morning. Hopefully you can get a good nights sleep too.

I just saw this now! Poor lil guy, I am glad the medicine is helping him. Feel better soon William!

    • Gold Top Dog

Just checking in.  I'm glad the meds are kicking in too.  You just keep getting better William, you hear?

    • Gold Top Dog

Aw poor william, it must be going around. Meri has her first cold right now and it breaks my heart to see her usual cheery self sort of subdued. I hope william feels better today and continues to do so!

btw, if william takes a bottle try using one of the bottle nipples, put the medicine in there. He might take it better that way without all the drama.

Also I put a few drops of eucalyptus and peppermint oil in the water in her humidifier. It seems to help with the cough.

I really hope he feels better soon!

If you are eating, stop reading now.

He was a lot better today so we went shopping for a new kitchen and stopped for a Nandos.  He had some chips and garlic bread and a little bit of fruit and some yoghurt.  I thought he did SO well to keep it down and not be sick and then DH picked him up to give him a drink... His "white" vest was a kind of beige colour.  I looked again think, I could have sworn that was white.... and then noticed that the tshirt (white and beige stripes) was in fact just beige at the waistband.  He was up to his neck is poo which was half runny and half just water!

Sorry to be gross, but I am convinced that the anti biotics have caused this, (or at least contributed to it, as he bum was runny yesterday morning before he started the medicine) because the balance of bacteria in the gut will have been disturbed.  Is there anything I can give him to help restore that balance and ease this runny bum?  Maybe those breakfast drinks like yakult or actimel... what do you think?  Do you think he's too little for those things?  Or maybe I should just go out and get some natural yoghurt and hope that helps..?  What do you reckon?

I think likely the yogurt will help.  Just make sure to keep up his fluids so he doesn't dehydrate.  But i think you'll just have to carry a change of clothes for the next couple days.  It'll run its course.  You may want to use a bit of Vaseline or a diaper rash ointment on him for the duration though as runny stuff can burn.

Oh and keep his foods mild.

    • Gold Top Dog

awww, i would get plain yogurt and add fruit to it rather than buy the stuff that has all sorts of sugars(which might upset his tummy). I hope he feels 100% soon!!!!

I agree with you that the antibiotics will cause that diarrhea.   I think his initial nausea could very well just have been due to the respiratory drainage.  Throwing up actually is good to help clear up all of the pluggage mucous causes.

    things I used to do:

*humidifier, esp at night needed to help ease the respiratory and prevent irritated dryness of mucous membranes which would in turn cause more production of plugging mucous.  So humidity dilutes and makes it easier for baby to breath.

*Vick's Vaporub which helps to keep breathing passages clear.

*vaseline around the nostrils (outside on skin, not in nares) to prevent chapping.

*popsicles, jello, pedialyte pops, flattened ginger ale - ginger is a good settler for the stomach

Maybe ask doc about baby immodium or kaopectate?   if there is a ton of diarrhea, baby is getting dehdrated. You don't want that, he will be physiologically stressed enough from this wapping infection he is fighting.

Thanks for the tips.  I don't have a humidifier tho.  How much are they and where would I get one from?  Is there anything else I can do in the meantime?

cheap ones run $30-40 here better ones up to $200, I got mine at Target and Home Depot respectively...I have a cheapo and an nice one both. You can run a HOT shower and sit with him near it....same thing....or allow the steam to circulate around the house...

The shower does work great.  This morning I set meri up in her high chair, gave her frozen bananas in a fresh feeder and took a nice hot showerwhile she benefitted from the steam and gnawed on her frozen treat!
