Which one should I get?

Ok, I want to get a new digital camera. Right now I know very little to nothing about photography, so I need something that has a good Auto. But I'm hoping to eventually learn more and get more into photography, so I want something that can "grow" with me for a while. At this point I've picked 2 cameras that I like, but I'm not sure which one I should get.

Canon S3 IS or Canon SX100

So what do you all think? If there's another camera that you think would be better, what is it and why?

The improvements from the S1 to the S3 are pretty good and significant, but I don't think the difference between the S3 and the S5 are really necessary, especially if you are looking to save. The SX100 looks good too though!! I think those are great picks.

I have the S3 and I like it, but I've been into photography as a small hobby since I was in highschool. Its a nice camera and does tons of stuff, but its not the camera to take along places where you want candid pictures. You don't just simply turn it on and shoot. You have to take off the lense cap, pull out the screen, flip up the flash if you need one and select your setting...then turn it on. By the time I've done this, both dogs and my kids have stopped what they were doing to pose for pictures. If I had it to do again, I'd likely get a full out SLR and a little pocket camera for candids.

Hmm....I hadn't thought about that....

The SX100 doesn't have the flip out screen and the lens cover opens electronically....do you think that would be better?

I don't know what to get. I keep going back and forth. First I'm convinced I know I want the S3....then I think, no maybe a different one would be better for me.....then I go back again. LOL I'm indecisive normally, this is just worse.
