Check out this awesome job I have an interview for! (Now with BC questions) (by keedokes)

This local company is looking for local dog handlers part time...so I applied and I got an interview for tomorrow!  I'm so excited, this way I get a doggie fix even if our application for Bruno falls through.  It gives me motivation to get things done away from home, as well.  Time away from the kids and a life!

     *sigh*

    Whooo!

Wow!  They train dogs to chase away the geese?  That is sooo cool.  I would love to do something like this w/ Misty!  Hey, why not, right?  She can work instead of me!  lol  That is sooo cool.  I wonder if they have anything like that in PA?  If you get the job, or think to ask them, would you let me know?  I am truly interested in something like this.  Thanks!  And, good luck!  Hope it all works out for you!  I know, being a mom, you just need some people of the adult size stature to talk with.  They're not always that much different than your kids, but you're bound to find a few who aren't so bad!  LOL  Good Luck!

I actually contacted them thru their site, I'll let you know if I hear anything.

Thanks, Janet...and can I add that I love your sig?

Well, I had the interview, and if it's possible I'm even more excited!  It pays well, the night hours are really at night (after dark whenever I would have time...so my husband could still work his extra hours/overtime and it would be after the kids are in bed) and the weekend hours are great, too!

We would potentially have a dog placed with us, as well--they would pay for food/vet/grooming plus a $100 stipend each month.  I haven't heard about Bruno, but his petfinder page has been removed and I think we're out of luck.   Sad  Maybe this will fulfill my doggie needs even if we don't get chosen to give a Saint Bernard a home.

I just think this job is a perfect fit for me and would give me the lift back into 'outside' life that I need.

    Whooooo!

Oh, and what do I need to know about a Border Collie coming into my home with a 3 year old and 7 month old?

He won't be a puppy, but what can I expect beyond the basic huge activity level and crazy intelligence?

You could get anything.   Some will go into wait mode,,, just watching out a window or laying in a bed waiting to go to work.  Some will be active and pace,  some will find other things to do that may be amusing but can become neurotic (chasing things, chewing on things).  Plan for training time and some bonding options (I always suggest hand feed part of a each meal, then leave them be.)  I have seen all types, those who can barely stay in their own skins, and those with an absolute on off switch.

Thanks.  Do they need anything special for training since they're so smart?

I found with my GSD X BC if you gave him a barrier ie. a baby gate, or closed door, or his crate even....it was just an obstical for him to find his way around/out of.

By the time he was a year old he knew how to open doors as well as the sliding baby gate and had figured out how to get out of his crate (it wasn't that it wasnt big enough he had TONS of room)

Well, so I didn't get the job. (I know I'm dredging this thread up after awhile...) but as we're once again strapped for cash, and my husband has been talking about needing to get another job (this would really, really bite) I decided to email the company again to let them know that I'm still very interested in working for them.

Then...then...then..........!  I got an email back!!  They just started to look for someone new last week but it's not up on their website or posted on job sites.  I've got another interview Monday!

Oh, bring me those iDog vibes!

This is so needed--for getting out of the house, and for funds (we have none).  Oooooooooh, I really, really want this job!

Sounds like a GREAT job.  I hope you get it!  Keeping our fingers and paws crossed.

Good luck!  I am not surprised they are looking now - the return of rain in many areas has the goose population booming (lots of grass).  I've got people begging me for dogs but I've only got one here now and she's promised to someone!

This is what I do, by the way.  I train dogs to go on to go into homes like you are hoping yours will be!  It's a wonderful outlet for well-trained rescues with the right instincts for the job (but the wrong instincts to be pets! Big Smile )

If you get the job, you will be matched with a dog that is appropriate for your home.  My dogs, for instance, are fully trained to come when called, stay with you unless asked to go work, leave stuff alone that isn't their business, and of course have all their basic obedience and manners.  My dogs are also fully socialized and also, as a client of mine calls it, "Anti-socialized" - that is, trained to ignore strangers just as a guide dog is not allowed to acknowledge attempts to distract him from work.

Wouldn't it be funny if you ended up with a dog trained here?  I only work a few each year so you'd know.

    Go get em, girl!

    I got the job!!!!!
