    Yet another camera thread

If I can manage to post a picture.

This is a $7200 lens that this photographer rented.  The story is he had the camera on a monopod.  The head of the monopod was not strong enough to support the weight of the camera and lens.  The head broke off the monopod.  The camera and lens hit the dock, the lens mount broke off the camera and the lens fell into the swamp.  He hired a diver to retrieve the lens but it is not repairable.  His deductible is 12% of the value of the lens or $864.  Not to mention whatever it costs him to repair his camera body.  I hope the shot was worth it.  Smile

And it's got some girth to boot!

That's painful just to look at the lens being pulled out of the water.

I agree, Steve. But at least it wasn't the 1200mm. :)

That lens comes with a personal bodyguard and a Sherpa to lug it around.  I believe that only a few of those were ever made.

The 1200 mm, yeah.  I think they make like 6 a year.  Adorama had a used one for $100,000.  Lots of people don't have that kind of cash laying around.

dang.. that is quite the story.  I too would like to see the shot.

I know.  Wouldn't it suck?  My kind of luck.

The guy had the good sense to insure it but it was still quite expensive.  OTOH, I don't see a tripod collar on the lens so I assume the idiot had the camera on the monopod rather than the lens.  He was just asking for trouble.  As I understand it, he really had no choice but to hire the diver to retrieve the lens because, for obvious reasons, insurance didn't cover "missing" lenses, only damaged ones.
