A Pair of Sneaks for Valentine's Day???

So I ask my wife a little while back, any ideas for Valentine's Day?  Probably a mistake right there, women like the spontaneous, I know better.  She wants a new pair of sneakers.  WTF I say, why don't I just get you a toaster or something?  How about some flowers?  No, they're overpriced and die anyway was the response.  Is the romance officially dead or what?  Cupid's arrow simply just can't find it's mark this year.  Guess I'm just a silly romantic, why do I still bother to try...  So, what is so special about a pair of sneakers.  She tells me they are called Masai Foot Technology something or other.  I just say last week, I need to link to the website to get the sneakers for you so they're here for Valentine's Day.  She says I already ordered them and they came yesterday.   WHAT, so now I feel like I've done nothing for Valentine's Day...thanks a lot.  How about we go out, just you and I for a nice romantic dinner.  I have to work M-F so it has to be a Sat night dinner.  She says no thanks.  I'm no cheap date, I said The Harvest Restaurant (Pomfret, CT., check out their website).  Not interested.  Then she says I think my mom is coming up for the weekend.  I then say, OK, suppose I take both you and your mom out for dinner at The Harvest....then the eye's light up....really, you would do that, take my mom out too for Valentine's Day.  No kids I said (our oldest is old enough to babysit), I'm not taking the the five of us out, just you and mom.  So, that has possibilities.  I'm trying, but like I said, after 16 years I think Cupid's Arrow has hit a brick wall.  Think I should still come up with at least a small bouquet of flowers?  I agree,  the dozen rose thing  is a rip off because they charge you like triple for the flowers.

I think every girl loves to get flowers - they just wont admit it. =]

I feel simple is always better, a small bouquet of flowers, some chocolate, and a nice card. I don't like extravagant things - fancy dinners don't really appease me.

    But hey, that's just me!

I always tell my husband not to bother going nuts getting flowers too.  It's so hectic at the stores that day and it's true they charge so much.

I MUST get my heart shaped box of chocolate every year though!!

How about the Whitman's sampler box?  Well, guess I'll stop at Pharmacy on the way home I see what I can dig up.  Go with the heart shaped box....hmmm.  Maybe a couple boxes of the heart shaped for the kids and a sm. bouquet of flowers plus a box of candy and possibly the dinner?  I'll think of something I guess.  I hate Valentine's Day, so difficult.

NO, don't get her what you get the kids.  And a toaster?  ewww you talk about romance dead??  Toasted is more like it!!

She asked for something for HERSELF.  That's key.  The dinner is a nice touch and wins you points but she knew the sneakers were pricey.

Why not do just ONE red rose .. or a small bouquet of wildflowers.  If she's trying to lose weight candy can be self-defeating.  But don't get her what you get the kids -- that's a mistake.

What about a spa day thing just for her?  Or a hot stone massage (I am very addicted to those :P)

I understand where your wife is coming from---I live in that zipcode :)

Instead of cut flowers, get her a small blooming plant she can keep somewhere that she can see it every day.

If she already got the sneakers, does she have a favorite pair of socks? Buy her a few more....You could also get some foot massage stuff and offer to rub her feet. Flowers or going to a spa or out to eat is fun but temporary. A plant that keeps blooming, something she wears every day or foot massages once a week are much longer lasting Valentine's Day gifts.

    Good luck!

Definitely some candy.  I like the plant idea instead of flowers, or perhaps get her a stuffed Teddy Bear?  A nice plush one with a cute face, most Hallmark stores have them.

I think you missed the sarcasm that was in that line.  She asked for sneakers...I said well why don't I just get you a toaster.....as in a joke....like a blender or coffee pot....knowing that those things are not romantic....follow???? no biggie I guess if you don't see that, but my wife was fully aware at the time I thought a pair of sneakers was not romantic.

Yes, I did that one years ago for her thinking it would be a big hit.  It wasn't though unfortunately and the gift certificate for the all day spa treatment just sat around on a shelf for about 2 years.  See, the problem was I would have to come up with TWO gift certificates, one for a friend because it's no fun going to the spa alone.  So, the same place also runs a spectacular Easter Buffet Breakfast and we were allowed to exchange the Spa gift for the buffet like two years later.  This buffet is like $50 per adult and $30 per kid, so family of 4 she had just a bit extra left on the gift card.

Thanks for all the ideas BTW everyone.  At the cost of the sneakers, I should just leave well enough alone!  They are known as MBT shoes for short.  There is a whole line up from sandals, to hikers, sneakers, business casual...etc. check 'em out.  You may find them interesting.  I'm not buying it BTW (the concept), sounds like mumbo-jumbo if you ask me.

Very good!  Now if she were a Pom owner maybe I would consider something something like that, but she is not really a dog lover.  Her dog is a Yorkie (15), and I seriously doubt she would like or wear any type of dog jewelry.  The pet care is 95% me including cleaning the cats litter box.  I didn't want the cats, I protested, I swore I wasn't going to clean litter boxes but guess who get stuck with that task as well.  Dog jewelery is out of the question. Separating fantasy from reality, Pom jewelry gifts are strictly in mind only for a nice friend mature enough to realize it is the thought that counts and not the actually giving...plus it's kind of fun knowing it gets other people a bit perturbed....haha.

So, I did pick up a few nic-nac type fashion jewelry items today as a matter of fact.  Have you ever heard of Brighton?  They make stuff like bracelets, earrings, necklaces, etc.  I asked the lady if she had any gift boxes and what do you know, I got two heart-shaped tins, one for the earrings and one for the necklace.  The earrings are heart shaped and the necklace kind of matches with little hearts going all the around.  I think she is going to like.

The last valentine's gift I got from DH (before we were even engaged actually) was a cordless electric drill set. Big Smile
