    Go on...throw things. (sl2crmeg)

I've been procrastinating posting about this since I'm fairly insecure about it, but here goes...

According to my doctor, I'm 7-8 lb. UNDER weight. (This is where the throwing things part begins.) I'm only 5'2'' and 97 lbs., where a year and a half ago, at my last appointment, I was 107 lbs. I honestly don't weigh myself EVER (my mom didn't believe in scales, growing up.) so I had NO idea. I've always been a kind of eat-when-I'm-hungry person.

Since I've been 'spoken to' about it, I have noticed that I feel pretty run-down and tired. Unfortunately I have no clue how to gain weight. I know, I could gorge myself on fatty yummy things, but I don't think that's the right way to go about it.

So, has anyone ever had to *gain* weight?

I have, but it's been years... Now I could stand to LOSE 5 or 6 lbs. Ha. I remember basically doing the same thing I need to do, now. Remembering to eat at LEAST 3 times a day, and eat nutritious foods.

You might try healthy, calorie dense foods like avocados, nuts, and the like for snacks.

Aha, that's the thing...I'm pretty picky, food-wise. I hate avocados, and nuts. I basically don't like the texture of most foods.

I could try more things for breakfast though, now that you say that. I usually just have a slice of 5-grain toast and coffee or water.

Put some butter on it? Do you like creamy peanut butter, at all? Maybe some of Gina's melting chocolate, LOL?

I'm picky, too, so I just think of things that I like, LOL. Do you like smoothies? You could mix up milk and fruit, maybe with a little bit of protein powder (you'd have to really look for one that blends well, though) to go with your breakfast. I love smoothies. I like banana, berries, and (soy or almond, I'm vegan) milk, with a little sweetener.

I don't like butter in the morning, only at dinner. But PB, hm. Yum! And we recently inherited a blender, so maybe some smoothies too. But I like mine with yogurt : ) and berries and like one slice of banana.

My mom told me to get those Ensure drinks, blech!

I am 5'7" and weighed 105-107lbs most of my life pre baby...I am now about 125lbs.

You sound like me...and honestly? Nothing, IMO will gain weight like time...time for your metabolism to slow...life changes...etc. My body simply did not store weight til it was good and ready to.

Now I CAN suggest toning your body and even a bit of weight training...muscle adds weight. So there's that to consider.

Exercise -> hunger -> more eating, and good (muscle) weight :)

Also, don't be like me and just kind of forget to eat, or not bother with meals. Have a lot of snacks, but nutritious ones. Things like fruits or granola bars or even just pieces of chicken or something. Whatever you'd find tasty. Keep food on hand and convenient so it's easy for you to eat. Take time with meals when you can so you have time to chew and digest and "graze" a bit.

I've had to gain weight before, but it was mainly because I was stressing out so badly I wasn't eating. Making it a priority in my life to eat at least 3 times a day, and at set times, helped my peace of mind as much or more as it did my weight troubles. (I'm 5'7" and at my healthiest/fittest I'm about 115. When I'm unhealthy/overweight and not exercising I'm 125 - never in my life been over that - and when I was having my worst troubles I was at about 100-105. Not a healthy weight for me.)

About a year ago I got baaadly stressed out and my body went bonkers on me.  I lost a lot of weight, and couldn't gain it back, my doctor told me I was severelly under weight for my age and height, I am about 5'6ish and weighed about 92lbs, she told me to eat often during the day, to have snacks with me where i went, and to munch.  I managed to now get my weight back up to about 105, but it goes up and down.  Sometimes it is lower than normal, sometimes higher.

Just have stuff on hand that you like, and eat them as you go along through the day.

Muscle weighs more than fat. If you do some weight training, you will gain muscle weight. But you will also lose what fat you have. Muscle burns fat. Bigger muscles burn more fat.

IF I were you, I 'd just relax. Wait until you are in your 40's. You'll gain weight doing nothing.

TastyKakes are on their way to you.  Big Smile  Okay so they're not the healthy way to gain weight but they sure are yummy!

I've never had to gain weight but I'm an expert at it nonetheless. Stick out tongue

Some things to eat to gain weight (also known as "some of my favorite foods";)

    Pasta
Baked potatoes with sour cream and cheese
    Pizza
    Mexican food
    Chinese food (American style)
Breads (crackers, cinnamon rolls, banana bread, cookies, cakes, desserts)
    Sandwiches
Anything fried or deep fried (not healthy, but fine in moderation)

I wish I had to gain weight... Wink Good luck to you.

    Some good suggestions so far - my concern wouldn't be that you need to carry more weight but that you are the poster child for osteoporosis.  I say that because it is much more prevalent in petite light women and now is the time to be preventative.  I don't know what you do exercise-wise or how you eat but here are a few ideas;

    Add some weight bearing exercise

Add some strength training, small weights are fine but do some

Get some dark green veg in your diet and some quality yogurt daily

As for gaining weight I wouldn't worry to much about that however smoothies are usually high kcal and healthy.  Add some yogurt, whole milk, crushed ice, banana, strawberry or whatever fruit floats your boat and blend yum yum.  You can buy some powders that you can put in that increase vitamins and protein if you like.

I think I would keep track (best to write it all down) what you are eating for a week.  This will enable you to get a reasonable check on how many kcals are going in and what quality.  If you really wanted you could perhaps see a nutritionist through your health coverage.  As I said I wouldn't worry about weight gain just for the sake of weight gain but protecting your bone health is big and you are still in a age group that is building bone.

Everyone's metabolism is different.  I could eat nothing but carbs and not gain weight.  I used to run marathons and couldn't keep weight on as a vegetarian and eventually went back to eating meat because it was the only thing that kept my weight up.  The really important thing is that you have a healthy diet as your base so that then if you want some junk food its not replacing the good stuff!

Thanks for the ideas, ladies (and Ron!). I had a feeling that I'm just one of 'those' people. Kpwlee, I didn't know that about osteoporosis, it's good to know.

I do *love* the gym. The university has an a-mazing wellness center, and I like to go twice a week and get on the elliptical (mostly because I go in the mid-afternoon and I can watch Judge Alex and all that other TRASHY trashy mind-rotting TV) but maybe I'll ask one of the trainers to show me what would be best to build muscles.

Your case is not as extreme... but my BF has the same issue. (He is more like 40lbs underweight). In the past week and half we have gotten 10lbs on him. He eats... A LOT. But not just fatty nasty yummy food. But he eats at least 6 times per day and then he drinks Boost (for the extra calories) and a protein shake (or he eats a protein bar). The doctor told us to make sure to increase the protein!! And in order to GAIN weight you want to take in more calories that your losing. So a lot of cardio is NOT recommended (according to the doctor) but do weights to help build muscle. (and in addition to all of that he has an apetite stimulant...to help him want to eat more regularly...some of his poblem was that he was only eating at night and not all day. Now he is eating breakfast, a big lunch, snacks, and big dinner.)
