The poor stay poor, the rich get rich.

working a low wage job will never allow you to not be poor. working 2 low wage jobs will never allow you to not be poor.

there are plenty of people who are rich through no fault of their own, and plenty of people who are poor through no fault of their own.

There are many reasons someone may end up in a situation of poverty.

lol did you not just say what I just said... I'm saying people are poor for a REASON.

When I think of like poor I think of many variations and when I'm saying dirt poor i'm thinking of that crazy guy who sits on the street corner with gross old clothes

When I think really rich I think Bill Gates, Donald Trump

reeeeeeeeeeeally don't know why people say they disagree then come back saying NO! people are poor for a reason! lol did you not read what I wrote? Poor for a Reason, Rich for a Reason.

You are poor for a reason; You are rich for a reason.

    That's the real saying.

there we go i'll quote it again ;o)

If you are poor... like dirt dirt poor. You were either born into poverty, didn't get an education, or are pure lazy.

this means old crazy man on the street corner drinking booze... that's dirt dirt poor to me. that doesn't happen to someone just b/c they had a baby with a disability. that's what I was defending.

When I read your post, it made me think you meant poverty is a choice, the reason folks are poor, they want to be poor.  The most recent census indicates there is an increasing number of children in poverty.  Those folks dont want to be there.  They may have any number of challenges that many of us have never had to face.    The posts make me feel you are missing a part of the equation.

lol okay that is officially the 6th time I heard that. I promise this, I will go to B&N tonight and buy it. And I like reading so I will read it. Once I read it you and me are going to have a PM review about it.

actually, the bum on the corner quite probably has a mental illness. a mental illness that is prohibiting that person from being a productive member of society.

i read the book, and it is an eye-opener. in modern society, it is much harder to get out of poverty than just getting a job and working hard.

I think you might be surprised to find that an awful lot of the people you're referring to (sitting on the street corner) suffer from mental illness or have a substance abuse problem. We don't have treatment facilities for many of these people and just saying "hey you - get a job" isn't really going to help them.

make sense, i'm bad at typing communication i guess.

now this is where I can't shake the tough love part... WHY DOES POVERTY HAVE CHILDREN. And I felt this way my whole life and always hear "oh ya well if u ever get pregnant on accident see how you feel" yeah well guess what it happened and i got an abortion even though it was against all my beliefs. am i sad? psh ya went to therapy for a little bit to let it out... but HOLY CRAP i would have to have been an IDIOT to keep the baby... I can't even afford myself

this is where i'm even more "tough love"... there should be an income law for reproduction to stop it then. obviously educating isn't working...

is that wrong to think that way tho? i mean come on lets all be realistic not heros for a second... if you are dirt poor why should you have a kid?

aight it is official I will go read the book... i need an eye opener then. b/c i don't know if i'm being selfish or a realist. i always thought i was just stating the "cold" hard truth.

not all kids living below the poverty line were born into families that were poor at the time of their birth. like stated before, people can become poor through a number of life altering events. if they already have kids, what then?

    • Gold Top Dog

A fair number of the children in poverty are in single parent homes.  In any number of those cases, there was a divorce and the kids were already here.  When I read your comments, I often am reminded, I too saw the world in black and white, yes and no, have and have not.  However,  with age comes experience (and hopefully wisdom).   I am just trying to get you to consider there may be more shades of gray than your are currently seeing.

then you are.... screwed. you'd have to declare collection, work ur butt off, and live a low lifestyle and hope for the best? and i don't wish that on anybody; i hope one day people won't need to feel like they are in that spot.

b/c when i plan kids i'm talking lots of money in the bank, making great dual income, living within means, making sure if something happened you'd be okay... like i refuse to have kids unless i know no matter what happened we'd be all right... i guess i just don't know why other people don't do the same?

now lets say these are all the cases... people really honestly think it is impossible to go from poor to rich?! if any of these things were to happen to me a fire would light under my ass and i would do w/e it takes to provide for my family accordingly; and i wouldn't expect PITTY from ppl

no i agree... i want to see these other shades b/c right now i'm not going to lie I'm TRYING sometimes but i have this mental block like "psh that is ridiculous... not my problem" so its hard to shake that b/c i simple can't see any other way.

i deff say i learn by experience? or viewing something. Like lets take DOGS for example. I used to be like psh w/e let ppl breed their dogs who cares about pet stores omg hippy freaks... yeah then i went and worked for rescues & helped a lawsuit holy crap that changed my point of view! now i'm a get rid of byb, puppy mill, pet store FREAK! haha
