    rwbeagles-blahhh pinkeye

yes the nasty pinkeye fairy has paid another visit to our house Indifferent...whee! I tell ya it's not as bad as some of the things a kid could bring home, but WHAT a nuisance! Lily mentioned a classmate was out with it a week ago....

    BLAH!

I have three grandchildren, and all three have had pinkeye within the last couple of weeks.  Abby even got it for a second time.  This was even with her mom washing and sanitizing everything in the house.  Abby actually got it first from a child that was brought to church with it.  It is a nuisance.  I keep imagining that I am getting it, because I watch the kids on the days I am off of work.  I haven't gotten it, just my imagination playing tricks on me.

I have never had pinkeye but my mom had it a few years ago.  Hers was so bad that it messed her vision up for a few months.

If it's bacterial it can live a LONG LONG time.  On everything from doorknobs to linen.  Wash ALL bedding (even blankets that can touch the eye) daily.

Similisan eye drops -- you can find them at health stores and a lot of grocery stores carry them.  Homeopathic eye drops -- they have a specific one for Pink Eye and it is GREAT stuff (particularly if the doctor has given something that can only be used twice a day and that poor sore eye is just suffering).

It's homeopathic (like the Oscillo -- and USE the Oscillo -- often pink eye is like a cold that settles in the eye) -- but it brings a TON of relief and it won't be contraindicated in anything the doctor gives.

Thanks Callie. I'll look into keeping that around. Her drops are actually 4 times a day so there's plenty of meds LOL. Not too bad this time. First time she got it was the worst...it's been something we jump on now and it doesn't ever get beyond a bit of stickyness and redness now.

She's back to school now...24 hours of treatment and you're good to be among the masses again. I'll be doin the cootie infested laundry today lol.

Ok, when I saw this thread, all I could think was "this is one time when we do NOT need piccies!!!"

Poor Lily.  Hope she's feeling better soon!  ("cootie infested laundry".... hahahah!)

That sucks Gina! I know you already know this, but purel your hands and make your whole family do it a millions times a day until it's completely gone so you don't get it too. Pink eye can actually be either viral or bacterial. The drops work really well quickly for the bacterial, the viral, not so much. Your symptoms are usually not so horrible with the viral though. Do NOT give any over the counter product without speaking to your physician, especially if you have already been prescribed drops. That particular one actually has belladonna in it, I wouldn't give it to anyone honestly. My mom is actually an ophthalmologist and she strongly recommends against the homeopathic drops as they tend to cause a lot of allergic reactions and eye burning, especially in combination with antibiotics. Again, your doctor is your best resource, you don't want to mess with the eyes ;)

Belladonna is known to be quite unsafe in kids, even in relatively small doses. "In children, death can be caused by a small amount of belladonna. Several reports of accidental belladonna overdose and death are reported. Belladonna overdose can also occur when it is applied to the skin. Belladonna overdose is highly dangerous and should be treated by qualified medical professionals. Because belladonna can slow the movement of food and drugs through the stomach and gut, the side effects may go on long after the belladonna is swallowed." This is from medline http://mplus.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/natural/patient-belladonna.html

Again, it's not ingested, but as you can see above even with it applied to skin it can be a problem. It's always dangerous to take things or recommend them without speaking to a physician.
