doggie breath

i was in petsmart earlier today. there was a lady in there with a chi puppy. i was looking at some stuff and she was standing beside me talking to someone on her cell phone. she was asking the person on the other end what to do for doggie breath. the person on the other end recommended greenies. (i know because she said "greenies? what is that?).

anyhow, it made me start thinking. our dogs have never had doggie breath. at least not that i have noticed. they dont get greenies either, but that is a whole other discussion!

if your dog had doggie breath, would you try something like greenies or some other chewable "treat"? start brushing their teeth if you dont already? or would you think the bad breath maybe somehow related to their diet and consider a change there? or ....?

I'd look at diet and dental health first

That being said... we do keep a stash of Greenies for special situations... like ingestion of dead things or poop. We spent the weekend on the farm and Lucy went through a pretty good supply of Greenies (and even a few of my all-natural breath mints) before we figured out where she and the other dogs were finding the rotten bones. Of course, her breath wasn't the only casualty. She also had to have three baths, because anything stinky enough to eat is stinky enough to roll in.

I have no breath problem with Trudy, but I keep her teeth clean with several good chews, not greenies. Also, the Petzlife tooth gel is good for that and the teeth.

I tend to use the tooth wipes more than anything. Willow's not a huge fan of chewing on bones so they really don't do much for her. My brother does give his dog a Greenie a night though, not sure if it's just for a snack or for teeth or both but I know a lot of people like and use them. Especially, since they've supposedly reformulated them.

I haven't a terrible problem with bad breath in dogs, but I am very regular about brushing their teeth. Bailey's breath will get a little off, but after brushing is fine. I brush his every night because he builds tartar up very quickly. I use CET toothpaste (vanilla-mint) - I think it's the best. Also, Peco sells little dog breath treats in metal containers resembling Altoids. I can't remember the name, but they are very good for bad breath.

Those little altoid like treats are called "yip yaps" My JRT loves them and they did work for her, I don't need to buy them anymore, because her diet improved, but I just asked my daughter the name of them, and Baby ran up and did her begging dance. All dogs understand certain things!
