UPDATED!! PLEASE READ I wish there was something I could do about this...

... that would have a good outcome for this dog. Some of you may remember my troubles with a Rottweiler that lives in my apartment complex. Anyway, it's very dog aggressive and she walks it without a leash. She has no control over him. He doesn't listen to a thing that she says. Sometimes sh even just opens her apartment door and lets him roam the complex without supervision. And just the other day, I opened my door to go for a walk with Max, and the dog was standing right outside my door. Other residents and I have complained to the apartment management about it.

Well, I was out for a walk with Max tonight, and on the way back I saw the dog trotting toward us from across the parking lot. I heard the lady (or should I say b***h) who owns him yelling at him to stop. She was cussing and screaming at the top of her lungs. She caught up to him before he got to us. Once she had a hold of him, she yelled "Don't you ever run away from me!! You listen to me when I talk to you!!" She then proceded to beat him. She started by slapping the back of his head. Then she walked around in front of him, and slapped him across the face with her palm and then the back of her hand. She did this back-and-forth slapping about 10 times that I saw. She continued slapping him and hitting him with something after that, but I was so disgusted that I just wanted out of there. I heard a loud thud just when I was walking through my door. I don't know what she hit him with, but it was something that was pretty hefty as it created a very loud thud.

If I complain again to the management, they will make her remove the dog. What will happen to it then? Will she take it to a shelter, where it will be immediately euthanized because of its severe dog aggression? Same thing applies if I call Animal Control. If he stays with her, she will continue to put me and Max at risk by walking him off leash, and he will undoubtably continue to suffer this abuse. I don't know what to do... [:(] I'm both infuriated and saddened all at the same time.

Oh, this makes me so sad. Reading your description of the beating made my stomach turn. I don't know how anyone can hit an animal. [:(] What a horrible woman!
    • Gold Top Dog
As much as it sucks, I think you need to report her. The dog isn't living a quality life if he's getting beaten and he's putting others at risk. I hate to say it, but maybe he's better off at the Rainbow Bridge...

Some things are worse than death.

The dog needs to be removed from that abuse.

I would give the closest Rottweiler rescue group a heads up and then call AC.

You witnessed a crime in my book....I'd have called the AC and possibly the police as well. You can still do that if you are willing to make a statement?

ETA: here's my city's wording on what you witnessed....you might check your city's..
"B. A person commits an offense if he beats, torments, mentally abuses, overloads, overworks, maims, disfigures, burns or scalds, mutilates or needlessly kills an animal, or if he carries or transports an animal in any vehicle or other conveyance in a cruel or inhumane manner, or if he permits any animal to remain in its own filth or if he causes any of these acts to be done"

[:(] what a terrible person to hurt a dog like that he definitely needs to be removed from such a horrible situation
You said the dog was aggressive has ever hurt anyone ? if he has I would definitely notify the authorities immediately before you or your dog gets injured . How old is the dog ?
    • Gold Top Dog
It's so complicated trying to decide what to do about neighbors when they don't do the right thing, isn't it?

I would of commited my own crime right there if I had seen what you did!  How dare she do that to that poor dog, aggressive or not!  I'd definately follow the advice of those telling you to report her to the police.  That dog needs to be removed.  If he does need to be put down at least he won't be suffering at her hands anymore.

I can't even imagine.  I never even raise my voice to Willow.  I just can't imagine hurting her.  What kind of people live in this world anyway?

Nice. The dog allows her to catch him then she proceeds to punish him. Next time the dog won't allow her to catch him. Why volunteer to get punished for obeying?

Personally I would call the local dog rescues myself & push them to take charge. The dog will most likely be put to sleep if taken by AC & will be if he harms or kills a small child or adult - most likely if he harms a pet too. Local rescues will take the dog out of abusive hands & into a home that can handle this type of dog. I can sense this is a story that is going to have a bad ending if nothing is done now. He sounds like he has a good chance at being a decent dog, all he needs is the proper training & care. Good luck.

Great idea!  If you explain to them what you saw they should be able to DO something.  That poor dog is not living the life it deserves!  Evil woman needs to be reported!  If she'll do this out in public just imagine what she does behind closed doors...scary thought![>:]

I'd call a rottweiler rescue and see what they tell you to do. Tell them you are GOING TO call AC and the police ask them if they'd be willing to take the dog from AC. But if you call the police, and abuse is involved, I would think AC would have to hold the dog until a judgment is made against the lady for abuse. Maybe AC wouldn't hold him, so ask the rottweiler rescue what would happen. Explain you don't want to see the dog put down because, from what you say, he is dog aggressive and a dog shouldn't be put down for dog aggression. That's usually manageable.
You need to do this or the next time it happens, the lady could beat that dog worse and the dog could be abused so badly that he may become aggressive towards people and then he WOULD have to be put to sleep.

    Where are you located?

Just goes to show the heart/mind of the dog. He is a good dog, he probably is looking for help. Wasn't it Barbara Woodhouse that used to say "there are no bad dogs, only bad owners!" This is case in point. I hope you can somehow help this dog.

Please let us know what happens here and remember, whatever happens to that dog-he is better off away from that cruel woman and  that you had to do something to protect your dog and your neighbors.

I agree with the suggestion that you contact a rescue group and enlist their help. They may already be on good terms with the local ACO and be able to work something out with him so that the dog could be seized and fostered until the woman is prosecuted.

Around here animals have been seized, photographed and turned over to rescue while a trial was pending. I think in the case of some horses the SPCA petitioned a judge to have the animals turned over to them and the judge did it, even though the criminal trial had not been held yet.

Good luck getting this dog---who obviously is not human-aggressive--out of this situation. Hopefully he can be re-homed and his owner can be prevented from owning any more animals.

What do you carry with you on your walks to deter/entice a dog who might attack your dog?

    PS: MS LAW
Currently, the law in Mississippi makes it a misdemeanor to abuse an animal---but there is a law working its way through your legistalture to increase the penalties for some things to a felony. The bill is called "Buddy's Law" after a 16 week old lab pup who was found at a gas station with multiple leg fractures and his eyes, ears, nose and throat filled with PVC glue. He was euthanized.

Here is a page on the law including the official house and senate bill numbers so you can contact a legistalor:

Here is an html copy of the Senate versions of the bill:

"The Petition Site" has a page on this but I did not go there because the link said it had photos of the puppy and I just couldn't look.

Last year MS passed a revised animal cruelty law which included cats (it didn't before) and outlawed hog-dog fighting [:'(]. Here is a link to a story about it:
