    Sunday adoptions

Hi everyone! I am a volunteer for our local animal shelter and every sunday we take a load of puppies and doggies to PetSmart.

thought I might begin a thread where each week I will post how many adoptions were made that day! Any other shelter volunteers are welcome to add their own adoption numbers!

Today we adopted out 4 out of 7 loving companions to their forever homes!

Ok, so it's not sunday. But we had another adoption.

Out of the litter of 3 and their mom  (my fosters) I am down to one pup. On sunday 2 of the 4 that were adopted were two of my foster pups. And, today I got a call from the shelter saying that someone saw Maisy (the momma) at PetSmart yesterday and they were intrested in adopting her. So today, she got a loving home, She has two friends now, one other chihuaua and a terrior mix.

    I am soooooo happy!

We do events like this too - but we only bring 2-3 dogs and maybe a cat or two. The petsmart by us has it's own adoption center (cats only) through another rescue group called Friends of Strays. They also attract many other breed rescues.

We show dogs there, and hand out information about out animals and what we do. The potential adopters must come back to our shetler to acutally adopt the pet. We've had too many problems trying to adopt out an animal directly from the store - reason being, people come to petsmart to get things for their pets. Not to get another pet (usually). I've seen many petsmart adoptions returned because the pet became somewhat of an "impulse buy".

I understand your "impluse buy" coustomers, Not sure how your shelter works but we share 5 out of 10 kitty show boxes at our PetSmart adoption center.  And, the kitty's remain there all the time. When we have an adoption we bring in another kitty.
Durring our doggie days we usually bring 5-8 dogs that are up for adoption depending on our number of volunteers for that day. Usually 2-3.Our adopters go through a survey, an application then the PetSmart agreement. That usually gives them enough time to mentaly process their adoption. We have also had people WAITING for us when we got there inorder to adopt a certin breed that we had just happened to bring with us  Dog

Well that's cool then. We have a large shelter, and when we send dogs to petsmart, it's only usualy 2 or 3, since there are other rescue groups and such there. Rarely do we bring cats, and when we do - they are set up in crates. They get really easily stressed out in the car on the way over.

I think any way of getting a good pet to a good home is valid. In Sherman, Tx, not far from me, is the Sherman Animal Care and Control ( animal shelter ) and they do a mobile pet adoption at the Petco. The have a trailer that was donated. It is climate-controlled and designed to hold small pets. Sometimes, they bring out the portable kennel and large dogs.

One of the best adoptions I ever saw was a family adoptiing an aged Great Dane with severe hip dysplasia and messed up paws from that, I think. I've seen people in a wheel chair move faster. The ACO was showing how you could tug on the dog's ears and mouth and he could care less. They adopted him on the spot. That was last year and I still get chills thinking about it. Sometimes, my fellow humans give me cause for hope.

I didn't get to go to PetSmart yesterday...  but they had an AWSOME day anyway!

9 adoptions! 3 cats and 6 dogs! They camje back with only one pup. If he dosen't get adopted at the shelter this week, we'll probably take him back to PetSmart on Sunday.
