Jack needs prayers--badly...

    Christina,

Our prayers for Jack, I know he will be fine!!  Please update us ASAP!

    ((((HUGS & PARYERS))))

    Dawn

Those damn e-vets.  Just becasue its an emergency they think they charge you astronomically instead of looking out for the pets best interest.  Our e-vet is the same. Once we had to use them and they made us put $700.00 on our credit card before they would even start to treat River and know what it would cost.  Of course it was twice that much when all was done.  Sorry for the rant but it makes me mad!

All our good thoughts to Jack and you as well...((hug))

We just dropped him off and I am so freaking upset.  They're not going to operate until NOON!  Why?  Because they have morning appointments.  Is this normal for dogs?  When ever we have had to have the vet out for a horse and there is an emergency, that takes presidance over the normal appointments.

If I'd known it was going to be like this I would have found a way to get the money together and just had it done at the e-vets.  Their going to give him fluids, pain meds, and antibiotics, but his bowel could rupture and he would just die because some chicks dorkie couldn't wait a couple of hours to get spayed.  I could have freaking driven him down to Purdue to get the surgery done in less time.  I realize the vet's schedule does not revolve around  my dog but she made it clear that this was a very grave life or death situation, but hey, we'll just fit him in when we can, hopefully he doesn't die in the mean time.

I have failed him.  I've failed him by not being more careful and double and triple checking that there was nothing he could get to-I've failed him by not having the e-vets operate on him-I've failed him by putting him in a position where he has to wait 4 more hours.  What if he dies?  I never had a chance to say goodbye to him.  He'll die by himself in a cage at the vets.

Oh no! No no no! Try so hard not to think like that ((hugs)) I hope everything goes smoothly the rest of the afternoon. Right at 12 I'll think extra-good-super-duper-mohawk-dog thoughts for him.

You are all in our thoughts today....

    • Gold Top Dog

Please, please don't think like that - we are all pulling and praying for him, and he is going to be fine.  Can you talk to your vet again to see if the surgery can be done immediately?  What a horrible thing for you to have to go through.....

Sending goof vibes for Jack and saying prayers.

My parents' dog has had 3 blockage surgeries -- two intestinal and one stomach, and has come through them all OK. (Long story, but the dog does not get enough exercise and stimulation and has PICA -- I think as a result.)

ETA - Don't want it to sound like I think that is the case with Jack. Just that they can be much stronger than we think. My parent's dog really should have died by now with all the things he eats, but he's a fighter and has come through each one like a champ.

Oh poor Jack. Stay strong buddy. We're sending all our love.

Sending prayers from here as well.

You be tuff Jack, your got your mama all aworried!

    • Gold Top Dog

I'm praying right now for Jack to get better! Try to find hope in your heart and forget all the bad stuff. We are sending our best for you, your family and Jack.

He *should* be ok with no problem.  Please don't beat yourself up.  It all depends on *where* the blockage is.  Rupture is pretty uncommon -- the intestines take a while to 'fill' and when the waste backs up to the stomach that's when they vomit (because whatever he ate last can't 'exit' the stomach).

You haven't failed him -- there are always things we wish we'd done or done better, but you have *not* failed him.  The e-vet said to wait.  That was actually a good indicator.

Then this morning they have to do some bloodwork, etc.  I don't think a couple of phone calls to the vet this morning would go awry but be 'kind' and don't make them angry ... just let them know you are very concerned that this is taking SO much longer than it should have.

You are justified in being ticked off -- but don't let it sour your whole mental attitude -- Jack needs you calm, cool and collected on YOUR end to make sure he gets good treatment and to make sure you can focus on prayers and good thots too.

If it's any comfort - I had a friend with an OLDER poodle who developed these symptoms of vomiting, etc. ... and it was DAYS before it was diagnosed.  In that case, the dog had apparently nibbled on a cotton hammock (someone lying in the hammock had spilled food or something?) and the cotton did NOT show up on an x-ray and they literally couldn't tell what the heck was going on or *where* the blockage was and ultimately it took an ultrasound (which on dogs then was pretty unheard of) to 'find' it so they could go in for surgery. BTW Cedar was like 9 when this happened and he lived another NINE years.

You've got prayers and good thots from here -- and yep got another sticky on my printer to remind me to think of him (and YOU) this morning and keep prayers going on.

Take care hon.  and Hang Tight!!

Oh Christina hang in there - I teared up reading this post with you.  You haven't failed him.  Surely no vet would delay a surgery like this if he/she felt more imminent attention was necessary.  I have to believe that and you should try too.  Heck just for lawsuit purposes I don't think they would knowingly delay something like this.  i know I would be like you and freaking completely - sending you prayers and strength.

And Jack, you have had a lot to deal with already.  Let's get through this and be happy and healthy from this point forward, alright sweet boy?

I would call the vets office and be as pleasant as possible, i would likely be calling very regular ( every 30 minutes) to inquire how he is doing and when they would get him in.   I'd probably let them know how frightened and concerned I am.  This may not be the right thing to do But I'm sure I'd be doing it.

    Don't blame yourself!

    • Gold Top Dog

Christina, this is NOT your fault.  You cannot blame yourself.  Sometimes things just happen & we both know it.

The four hour delay shouldn't be a huge issue.  Your vet has likely already hooked Jack up to I.V. fluids, & is letting the fluids drip for a bit before going in to surgery.  That way he has some of the fluids replaced from his vomitting episodes.

If you really want to spend time with Jack, call your vet's office & ask if you can come sit with him up until surgery.  I'm sure that both you & he would feel a little better after getting to spend some time together.

My prayers are with you, your dh, & Jack today.  Please keep us updated when you have the chance.  (((Hugs)))

Just echoing that this is NOT your fault.  You haven't failed him.  You are doing the best you can for him by getting him to the vet to be cared for.
