    Brreders/showing dogs - Help

We looked at corgi puppies today.  There were three females and three males. We have a dominant male corgi already.

Everyone agree that if we get another corgi it should be a female - or would a submissive male likely be okay?
It looks like the breeder is keeping one female, and another breeder wants the second female.  The third female (the one that would most likely be available to us and most likely to be laid back) seemed a tad timid, and in my wife's and the breeder's eyes did not have a ;pretty head (awful sweet though).

The breeder did ask ( my wife really liked #1 and #2) if we would be willing to show our puppy (or let her show it - i'm not sure).  My wife said  "have an unneutered dog? to which the breeder said "okay, forget that".

The more I think about it, I think the breeder was saying maybe we could get #1 or #2 if we either co-owned it or let her show it.  Does that make sense?  I think we'll ask her tomorrow what she meant.
    What does co-owning mean?
How does letting her show it work?  Would we have to bring it to shows or to her house - an hour away?
How often would shows likely be?
How often do dogs go into heat? How many times a year?  Does it make a mess in the house?
How long do you show a dog?
Is it likely we would be able to get it fixed when she stopped showing it?

As far as dealing with female in heat you can get doggie under wear for her.

The little doggy diapers really aren't so bad. The only thing is, it will make your other dogs a little crazy when she's in heat, even though they're neutered. When Teenie went in heat, Emma was sooooo weird!!! It wasn't messy at all (Teenie's a very clean girl) but it was stressful for everybody. I'm not really interested in having an intact dog, at the moment, but.... I don't think it'd be a hugely big deal to deal with one or two heats a year.

I think that the rest of the stuff depends on the dog, how well she shows, and your and the breeder's preference.

If you are heavily into showing, you can show every weekend!  No, I can NOT afford that, so Gypsya nd I would go about once  amonth.  Since she's retired, we go to have fun with her breeder and act as an extra set of hands and another body if a second dog needs to go in the ring.

Gypsy comes into season every nine months or so.  She is a bit on the drippy side, so she wears bitch's britches all the time.  I put a pantyliner in the britches to keep the mess at a minumum and I taken them off at night when she's crated.  It's not a big deal but I DO have to watch for males when we're out walking.

Be prepared--intact males you have NEVER seen will show up at your door! They can smell her scent formiles and miles.

co ownership is not for the faint of heart or the minimally acquainted.  co ownership is almost like shared custody of kids in that both parties have a big say in what happens.  Co ownerships often mean the right to breed the dog, your bitch may or may not disappear for significant amounts of time (pre season, through breeding, whelping and weaning).  You may or may not have any input into which stud dog is used.  It all depends on the contract.  Now owning outright and allowing the breeder to show the dog is a different story.  First off, showing actually takes time and training and it aint cheap.  You really have to want to do it.  I spent considerable time, money (consider the gas prices now too).  Shows are often selected based on the knowledge of the judge and the judges past history of winning animals.  A show just an hour away is unusual.  Taking the bitch to the breeder on wednesday and picking her up about a week (or more) later could very easily be part of the picture.  Current entries are about 25.00.  Few dogs without time and training and exposure finished in three straight shows.  I dont even know what kind of numbers you need for majors and how easy they are to build.  Easier for pems than cardies I know.

BTW Dess started being exposed to shows at 6 months.  I did about 1 or 2 shows a year ( he often went reserve to the winners dog even at majors).  He did not mature enough in mind and body to finish he turned four. From May 04 I showed him for about a year with a show about every 2 months.  It was on my schedule not the breeders.

Are you looking for a pet or a show dog?  If a pet and you like the breeding I'd go for the #3 female puppy.  First, a bit timid in a puppy can and often does change drastically as the pup grows up.  Two, if it's a pup then you shouldn't care at all about her head.  Third, co-ownerships can end up being WAY more trouble than they are worth.  I know so many people that regret them.  If you do think that maybe you want to show a dog then wait and get a show quality puppy and own it yourself.

I don't know anything about who this breeder is but here's my take on what tends to happen with a breeder co-owning a puppy:  the breeder possibly sees you as someone who will co-own this puppy and presumably handle all of the day to day care of it; She will show it, get a Ch on it (maybe) while splitting the considerable cost with you, get the benefit of another Ch from her kennel, breed the dog and get x number of puppies to either keep or sell.  You get a part-time dog, considerable costs, a female dog in heat to deal with, etc.

Also, why is your male dog not neutered since it doesn't seem that you are showing him in order to prove what a good example of the breed he is?  He'd be much happier and healthier if he was neutered.

Yankee, if pup #3 doesn't reach out and grab your heart, keep looking.  I personally wouldn't want to co-own, but check with Jaime...I believe she has a dog or two that is co-owned and she could walk you through the landmines better.

Thanks all for your comments.  The information was very helpful.  We have to call the breeder this am. so i'll be able to ask more (if my wife, who's still on the fence, is fine with it).  I don't know if the breeder meant co-own or just show.  She's the breeder we got Ollie from- we like her a lot as an individual.
Agilbcs - our dogs are neutered.  We want a pet.  If you go to dog.com's dog breed area and then click on the PWCCA site our breeder's picture is there with the best of breed at the 2005 PWCCA National Specialty show.
Glenda -it's grabbed my heart - not my wife's!

Sorry, I misread your original post - I thought you were saying that the dog you already had was intact.

If you trust the breeder and have a relationship with her  (and you do) I'd trust her to pick out the right puppy for me - male or female.

Actually she will - she has their temperments tested somewhere, somehow and will not determine who goes where until that's done.

Uh oh!  If she's grabbed your heart Yankee, you're not gonna have much choice!  Play on the head not being pretty with the wife.....poor little thing that no one is gonna want.......heck, you know how to work the wife!

I've told you the story of how Sheba came to be part of our family.  We went to buy Thor, just Thor, at 4 months of age.  DH went into the "gallery" to see a picture of the championship grandma while I was with Thor.....of course I HAD to see the picture and he dragged me in.....to the nursery.  HE had already fallen in love with the only white puppy and knew that if I saw her, I'd want her.....HE wanted her but wasn't about to ask for TWO german shepherds at once.......how could I say no??  It's usually ME bringing home critters![:D]

Don't worry a bit about the not a pretty head bit. That would only be in the eyes of an experienced dog show person. To you and anyone you know she will be beautiful.
    • Gold Top Dog
I saw the pictures you posted of her under photos and I think she's a cutie... head and all.
I think when she gets older she will grow into her blaze quite well.

Just my two cents, if I am getting another one, you have to too. LOL
