    Help! Evil insects invading!

    Angry

They have invaded.  Disgusting, evil, creepy-crawly, dastardly, hole-finding, crumb-eating COCKROACHES.  Argh!

I need help.  It all began a few weeks ago, when it was just one of them.  One, crawling across the counter.  Death by pot holder for that one.  Then there were more.  An ever-increasing tidal wave of roaches.  They are now coming from underneath my counter-tops, in cabinets, by baseboards.  They are all over the kitchen, and have begun moving a lookout patrol into my living room.  (Although I don't think they're very smart...they sent an expedition to the freezer, and that platoon died).

I don't understand, DH and I aren't unclean people.  Sure, a little clutter here and there, but nothing that warrants this.  I've had the apartment complex spray twice now, and the bugs still live.  I think they've moved in because of my next door neighbor.  I don't think he's the cleanest person, and they're coming through the wall between our apartments.  I've politely told the complex of my suspicions, but I don't think they can spray him without permission.

I'm at my wits end.  Spraying doesn't work, I've set traps, I've squashed them.  Does anyone have any advice to eradicate them?  I will try anything, I'm so afraid of them getting worse or moving camp to the bedroom or something.  Indifferent

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Get some roach motels...roaches check in but they don't check out.

Oh and I'd also look into finding another place as well.  Once roaches are firmly rooted it's almost impossible to get them to leave.  They're alot like younger siblings in that regard.Stick out tongue

If you can find it Bengal works really well for roaches, it comes in a red can with a little coffee type straw to spray it with. Spray that along every baseboard/window sill/nook and cranny. Also, As far as I know, apartment complexes are required to provide pest control once a month? They are here, anyway. If it gets too bad its a matter for the health department to come "investigate" and maybe they can make him spray? Also spray out on your porch inbetween the apartments and maybe even sneak over onto his porch and spray around his door too.  I assume you're talking about german cockroaches which are the hard ones to get rid of, I'm sorry.Sad

Yucky bugs!  I have had those "guests" in my house.  Not pleasant.  I used Boric Acid.  It's a powder.  Sprinkle it around the bottoms of the cabinets and along the edge of the counter tops, where the wall and counter meet.  You can also sprinkle some under your stove and fridge.  That's what we did and within days, those nasty little suckers were gone.  Good Luck!

I feel your pain.  When I lived in military housing in GA, we had a neighbor bring in a colony.  It was horrible.  The post would bomb our apartment, they'd move to their apt.  Then they'd bomb their apt., back they'd come.  What killed us was that we spoke to them several times about having the apts bombed at the same time and they'd always DENY that they had roaches!  They knew I was home all day with a newborn and I'd see when they called post exterminators!  We finally had some success laying down some stuff called Roach-Pruf along the wall between our apts, in the cabinets, behind the appliances and in front of all the entrances.  We had 2 dogs at the time and a baby and had to keep them all away from those rooms that adjoined the other apt. because we heard it was super toxic.

Good luck!  If you can't get your neighbor on board, it may be a very long year.... Ick!

If you live in an apartment, then you need to call the landlord and report this. They are probably coming from another tenant who is NOT clean. Plus, in most states it is the landlord's obligation to control pests.

Oh you rent!  Well, it's not you, they are probably coming from someone elses apt.  Call your landlord tell him how discusted you are about these roaches, you've tried getting rid of them, but they are invading.  They are so hard to get rid of and you can do all you want on your end, but if you rent, and there are apts. below, beside, above, if they don't do anything, you'll keep getting them.  Tell your landlord, you want him to have an exterminator come in and spray and treat your apt.  Get a professional, and make your landlord pay for this.  He probably won't be too happy to know, his apt. building is being infested by cockroaches.  Good Luck!

Thanks everyone!  All your suggestions have been great, and I think I'm going to go out shopping for all the pest controls you mentioned.  At this point, I want to do anything to get rid of them.  The complex has been really good at sending an exterminator out every week since the roaches moved in, but I haven't noticed the roaches slowing down at all.  (Which is something I'm going to bring to my landlord's attention).  So I'm going to take matters into my own hands and buy everything I can to exterminate them.  The one really fortunate thing is that :::knock on wood::: the roaches are really only in the kitchen.  Hopefully with effort and chemicals I can eradicate them.      The poisons for killing roaches, boric acid included, are VERY poisonous for dogs and rabbits and PEOPLE, too. Even if they say it ISN'T, it IS. I lived in New Mexico for 20 years, cockroaches are part of the wildlife there and they are entrenched in the sewers. Be absolutely sure to keep yourselves and your pets safe during extermination. Remove all pets, remove yourselves. I would argue against doing a whole bunch of stuff yourself. You don't want to over do it and poison yourselves.

I think someone in your complex must have a serious garbage fetish going if it is as bad as you say.

I'd even think of calling the Public Health Department if you landlord doesn't call you back right away.

At  least here in GA, it has nothing to do with cleanliness...so forget the dirty factor.  Ours were nesting in the pecan trees.  We have had an exterminator come in monthly for over 20 years, and still have them.  All we can do is try to control them.  When we see them, they are on their way out, and we have to happy with that.  For every one you see, there are many that you don't see.  In periods of dry weather, they come in seeking water, which is why you see them in the kitchen.

And yes, your landlord should be spraying each apt monthly, not you.

Thanks for all the advice!  I talked to the landlord, and they said that they're going to have the pest man come out and do some kind of special gel bait in all the cracks in the kitchen.  It's apparently supposed to have a high success rate in eliminating these pesky critters.  So I'm crossing my fingers!

At least we keep the kitchen shut with a baby gate.  That way, Honor or the bunnies won't be able to come in contact with any extermination product.  I was definitely ready to come in with everything like the terminator, but I definitely don't want to over-do it. Stick out tongue

I might pick up a couple of the roach motels as a second line of defense.  It's nice to know that others have had this problem though.  I've never had roaches before, and was disgusted.  The good news is that DH and I have gotten approved for the mortgage on the two houses we're interested in buying, so it won't be much longer before we can leave!

Congratulations!  And Happy House Hunting!  It's a dream compared to apartment living!
