CHICAGO - For one day, at least, the roadrunner was safe. It seems the coyote was hankering for another kind of fast food. Employees and customers at a downtown Chicago Quiznos sandwich shop were stunned to see a coyote walk through the propped-open front door Tuesday afternoon and lie down in a cooler stocked with fruit juice and soda.

"It wasn't aggressive at all," restaurant manager Bina Patel told the Chicago Tribune. "It was just looking around."

Employees and customers calmly cleared out of the restaurant, though some took the time to finish their sandwiches and snap some cell-phone photos, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Animal control officers took the passive coyote away after about 40 minutes, after a curious crowd had gathered outside.

"This one definitely I will definitely remember forever. A coyote in downtown Chicago," Quiznos employee Rick Torres told WLS-TV.

The city captures 10 to 15 coyotes every year, especially in the spring when they are most active, said Anne Kent, director of Chicago Animal Care and Control. Veterinarians will examine the coyote and, if he is not injured, release him into the wild.

I just saw it on the news. They have had several coyotes in the area. The coyote was trying to sleep. Looked very cute all curled up in the beverages.

That would've been neat to see.

the poor thing looked tired and scared on the news last night.

they never said if animal control relocates the coyotes or euth's them. hopefully the former. [&:]

They did a little thing on the Today Show this morning about this.  They said they were going to have him checked out and if possible release him.

Here in Maine if one shows up and acts like that, we all know that it has Rabies.  It would be shot before it could even be checked.  I am not saying that is good, nor would I pull the trigger, just saying what I know would happen around here.  I saw one about 5 years ago, looking at my kids playing on our swing set, and I went inside to get our camera, and yes, it was still there.  I have that dang pic, somewhere, but it was before digital, and all of those are filed under see you whenever!  I will look for it.  The coydog, which is what we call them here, wasn't that close, and just seemed to be watching what what was going on.  At that time, my GSD was in the house recuperating from surgery, so the coydog, well, was scoping out the joint.  I guess!

We live in a pretty big city (Portland), but it has lots of creeks and greenspace so you see coyotes every once in a while.  They feed on roadkill or feral cats.  There is one in my neighborhood, but I don't tell anyone when I see him.  I'm afraid my neighbor would use him for target practice, firearms laws or no.  I also keep the secret of Coon-Zilla, who is the BIGGEST raccoon I have ever seen.  His shoulders come above my knee and he looks like a bear... until you see his bandit snoot.  He cruises through early in the monring (2 - 3 am... you can tell I'm an insomnaic?)

I've never been to Chicago, but I'll bet that was a yearling looking for territory and got seriously misplaced.  Hope he has a good time in the sanctuary.

I would wonder about the health of this animal.

After the coyote was checked out it was determined that it was young and had probably just left its mother, so it was a little confused.  They are assuming that it walked down some railroad tracks that led it right into the city.
