if it's not controlled with the prilosec, you have a problem

My dad has issues with heartburn and my grandpa actually had acid reflux before he passed away.  I can drink water and get heartburn!  Is acid reflux a condition that can be passed genetically?  So far, the prilosec helps.  Once in a while I'll take it with no results and when that happens, I have to chew 5-7 tums to feel any relief.

I'm so sorry, only just caught this thread.  I'm so pleased for you... your DH is supporting you - that's GREAT! - and it sounds like you are moving it the right direction.  It sounds like you're feeling pretty frustrated, but hang in there!  It's going to get better now, you are doing all the right things.

Callie made a GREAT point about making a list before your Drs visit.  This way you can bring up all the things you want to discuss with your new Dr.  My best to you!

It is somewhat controlled by genetics too. You could have a hiatal hernia which contributes. If you were my patient, I'd sit down and have you do a food journal to see what in particular sets it off. Do you take the prilosec EVERY day? Or just when it hurts? What dose do you take? The first thing to try is weight loss and see if it gets better. If it doesn't, then an upper GI and likely and upper endoscopy need to be done. I take that back, I'd do that right now and biopsy for H. Pylori. That also can be worsening your symptoms. We actually do surgery for refractory reflux called a laparoscopic nissen fundoplication, but that is for severe cases that meet certain criterion. You can also get a study called a pH probe where they measure the reflux in your esophagus, but this is not usually done unless you are considering surgery (which I'm not telling you to do at this point ;))

Do you take the prilosec EVERY day?

Yes, I take it every day.  If I don't the heart burn returns.  I take the OTC prilosec.  I have been taking it for months now.  It's the only thing that really works for me.
