    Doctor's appt. tomorrow (Bullymom)

Well, I finally got up the nerve to make a doctor's appointment for my depression problem.  DH and I agreed to work things out under the condition that I would see my doctor.  I am nervous.  I know she is going to nag me about my weight and I don't think I can take that right now.  I know that I am over weight but I don't know why.  The week after I had Madison, I had lost 20 pounds but since I have been receiving the Depo shot, my weight has gone CRAZY.  I don't eat anymore than I used to but I keep gaining weight.  Is there any type of medicine that can boost my metabolism and help with my weight?  The one good thing about me going to the doctor tomorrow is that my dad is going to be keeping Madison.  So, I'll have the doctor's full attention.  Wish me luck and I'll tell y'all what she says!

I thought some people gain weight beacuse of the depo shot. I know one of my friends has 2 kids and after she had both she went on the depo shot. She got big. She said she got tired of being bigger than she was on the shot than she had be pregnant. So she quit and got her tubes tied. So I think it's the depo shot. Oh and she lost lots of weight after no more shots. I mean I dont know your options but dont feel bad about the weight. It's probally the shot.

I too believe it is a side effect of the depo, not a get out of jail free card, but it could be one part of the problem, depression also can cause weight gain.

I am happy you made an appointment, I am also extremly happy that you and your husband are working on this. It will not be easy but you took the first step and I wish you the best of luck.

Just for now, don't worry about the weight.  Your hubby is wise to have you seek medical advice when you need it - good for him for being concerned about you.  I think you may find that if you talk directly to your doc, that you will get the understanding you need.  If you don't, and you are having a problem with depression (which can also contribute to weight gain indirectly), then ask for a referral to a psychiatrist & therapist.  This is treatable!  But, you have to be proactive about your own care.  Sometimes, the first prescription isn't the right one, or the first therapist you see isn't a good fit.  Keep trying.  Most studies show that people who opt for medication AND therapy together are more likely to succeed in getting healthy.  It's natural to be nervous, but I'm glad you're going anyway:-)  Good luck.

Weight gain can also be because of thyroid problems.  So ask about that too.  Several of my aunts and uncles "blew up" because of thyroid problems and once they went on meds for it, the weight came back off.

good luck with the doc's tomorrow!!

In my experience most docs will not nag you about weight. If YOU bring the issue up they will try to be helpful in a way that is not over bearing - at least the good doc's are this way. So don't be afraid. Your weight is probably adding to your depression problem, so get to the root of it. You shouldn't avoid it or it won't go away. Seriously don't be afraid or nervous. Take ownership of your body and mind and convince yourself that you are doing the right thing - no matter how ashamed you may feel about your added weight.  You are worth it. You will be amazed at how you feel with just a little bit of progress.

Re: Depo - I took that for a year and yep - I ballooned on it. It was awful. So maybe talk to your doc about finding another BC alternative. My doc won't even administer Depo anymore because of all the problems it causes. (It could be contributing to your depression as well!)

Thyroid - ask to have this checked.

Good luck and let us know how it goes if you are up to it!

The doc should know better than to nag (I hope).  The weight gain can likely be from the depo.  Are you still on the depo?  The people I know that used it did gain weight and had other side effects like mood swings and depression.  I don't know much about each birth control and how it might interact with other drugs or conditions, but there are tons of options and just like anti-depressants it often takes several tries to find the right one.  I have changed pills before because of side effects.  Don't feel like you have to settle for the first thing if it isn't working or has other side effects that you don't like.

Thanks everyone!  My appointment is at 4 today so I have a little while to wait.  I have been on the Depo for 4 years now and I love the not having a period part but not the other side effects.  I go to my OB on Feb. 11 and I am going to talk to him about switching to Mirena.  I think I spelled that right!  I have got to get a hold on my life.  I feel like the walls are closing in around me.  Part of my depression is my weight.  I HATE the way I look and in return, I hate for DH to see me naked (hence the sex life issue).  I hope that the doctor can help me.  I am miserable.  She is going to have to give me something to help me sleep at night.  No matter how early I get up in the morning, I am still wide awake at 3 and 4 in the morning.  That's causing a strain on my marriage as well.

Good idea my sister had this done early last year and she says it's fantastic takes a little while for your body to adjust to it by the sounds of it and she did struggle a little after it, mainly hormones going nuts etc. So maybe sort your depression out till you feel a bit more in control before you think of doing the mirena. But yeah I highly recommend this I am planning on doing it but here in NZ it's quite expensive and not often done so you have to ask for it and pay for surgery etc so my broke ass is going to stay on the pill for a little while longer hehe. But I have heard many horror stories about the shot and my mother would never allow me to go on it.

But anyho enough of my babbling good luck at the docs, hope she is helpful and you can get some meds that will help you in the right direction!

Well, I'm glad to hear!  I've been thinking about you, and praying for you!  You know, depression can cause people to put weight on or lose weight.  When people get depressed, they sometimes look to food for comfort, me on the other hand, if I'm stressed or depressed, I don't want to eat.  But, you doctor shouldn't nag you about your weight.  That would be depressing!  Therefore, defeating the whole purpose of you going.  They do have something at a GNC store that you take to boost your metabolism.  But, I would check on the internet, or even ask the doctor tomorrow, about foods to eat, that do this naturally.  You'll be fine, glad you're not taking the baby.  You need to do this without her.  Good Luck, and let us know (if you want) how it goes!  Good thoughts always coming your way!  Smile

Make a list before you go tomorrow -- things you'd like to ask, things that bother you, etc.

I'm glad you've got the appt.  Take care -- still rooting for you!!

Well, that appointment was a joke.  I told the doctor that the Paxil wasn't helping and that I didn't think I needed to stay on it and what did she do??  She Upped the dosage!  WTF??  I came to her for help, not stronger drugs.  She also made this comment...  "Your weight just seems to be going up and we need to do something about that."  DUH!  Tell me something I don't know.  She said that it's most likely the Depo that's causing the weight gain.  She said to see my OB and get off the Depo and if that doesn't help, then she will step in.  I also have been having serious allergy problems and I have tried everything over the counter so she writes me a Rx for Allegra.  I told her that I have been taking that for a month now,(dad gave me his script), and it has not helped one bit.  She tells me to "try it".  I am going to call my insurance and change doctors.  I need help and she is not even trying to help me.
