My Thoughts Of THIS FORUM.

This is a dog forum, so most of the people here most likely do things above and beyond just tie their dog up outside.  If we all tied our dogs up outside this forum would be kind of boring.  Posts would look more like... "Well, it's Day #347, dog is still there.  Yep, he's still tied up.  I refilled its water bowl and gave him some food.  Alright, that's about it!  See you guys tomorrow!"

another great quote!! Good one sophiebean!!

The question was simple. Majority of you im sure keep your dog in the house, and are against a dog being tied up/and or kept outside. Rather in a fence, un-tied or tied next to a dog house.

Yep, you are right. I would not keep my dogs tied up next to a dog house. I would also not keep them outside all the time.

Why? becuase I prefer my dogs to be with me and they also prefer it. My dogs would be extremely unhappy if I left them outside tied to a dog house.

In that dogs are very much pack animals, yes, I don't think it's right to bring them home and leave them outside.  I share my home with six german shepherds and a couple cats.  I wouldn't have it any other way.

There are several reasons for this.....

    1.  Some dogs do not have to coats to maintain a healthy temperature outside (ex: A heavy coated breed out in 100 deg. weather, or a short-coated breed out when temps are in the single digits)

    2.   *Most* dogs are not going to recieve enough attention/socialization in the backyard.

    3.  It is fun having the dog inside and around me

yeah lol?  so this is just a forum to talk about your pet. I get you I guess it all depends on the breed. i have a 1year old german shepered that is kept outside as a gaurd dog.  i got a comment that said  ' if shes agaurd dog shouldnt i have her inside ' ...

well wouldnt someone have to go through the yard to get inside...

If you mean that keeping a dog inside is treating like a human I think that you are mistaken.  Just because you want your dogs around you doesn't mean that they aren't treated like dogs.  With the breed of my dogs they thrive on human contact.  They are so willing to please/work for humans that they actually are a bigger behavioral problem if not in the company of people.  For lack of better terms I become their pack leader and they want to be with their leader.

I believe that many of the behavioral problems with dogs is a lack of interaction with humans.  I'm not saying that you should treat them as little kids because I believe that can cause just as many problems.

And my answer for you is also simple. He is a part of my family. He is happier inside, witht he rest of his family. Dogs are pack animals, they like to be with other bodies. They are social creatures. Some people do keep their dogs outside, that is their own personal preference. Just because my dog sleeps inside my house, does not mean I treat him like a human.

You're right. My dogs live in my house and go out for exercise and bathroom trips. I don't leave them tied up outside near a dog house.

I don't think caring for your dog properly should be considered as treating them like they are human. They are living breathing creatures who have needs, they are not just objects to be shoved to the side. They need love, attention, training, the works. By tying them up outside or constantly having them locked outside, in what way is that good for them? For that matter whats the point of even having a dog then? Basically by doing that you make them sound more like objects. In what way should a dog be treated if you believe what most of us are currently doing is treating them like humans? JMO

A trainer I worked with once told me "what someone should understand about saying 'treating a dog like a human' is you respect that dog and treat it the same way you would treat your own sister, brother, mother, grandfather, etc. Those who 'treat their dog like a human' deserve respect"

So what I do agree with is, Yes I guess I do treat my dog like a "human" because that dog is like my child. I love it just as much and treat it just "as well" as I would my own son/daughter.

    Good quote Liv!

she gaurds my block, my street, my house, me. knows the neighborhood from 5blocks down!   Her house is outside because i raised her outside.    She is a Gaurd Dog and a friend.    Nothings wrong with a dog being outside.

Does your fence completely surround your house? Front and back yard? If she is sleeping on one side of the yard, how will se be alerted to an intruder entering on the other side? Shepherds are a breed that NEED human contact and compaionship. They thrive on positive praise, and love. You leave your dog in your backyard all the time, and I guarentee you, you will have more behviorial problems thn you know how to deal with,

pack animals. well her pack is  the neighborhood. she knows who lives across the street, next door, and behind us. knows people 3blocks down.   THATS HER PACK those are who she see everyday... on top of the dogs next door and around the block.  her house is outside. when its cold on a warmspot, when its raining under something, when its hot in a big whole of dirt

I could be wrong, but doesn't a guard dog work better if its bonded to its family?

I'd love to hear more about your dog - do you have any pictures to share?  I think German Shepherds are great dogs and from what I hear they'll be even more protective if they live indoors with you so that's probably why you got that comment.  There are many members here that have Shepherds and other working dogs that I'm sure would be happy to tell you about other things you could do with her.  If you work with her one-on-one and strengthen the bond between you I'm sure she'd be an even better guard dog.

well she always seems to catch me leaving the house, out the backdoor.  she hears and smells everything..very intellegent dog
