Ticks already

    Ticks already

Okay, it's only March and the temp here has been in the 80's!  Problem...  I put flea and tick meds on all of my dogs but every night, I seem to find a baby tick on Dipstick.  I've checked the other dogs over and not one tick.  I guess they are attracted to the puppy.  Is there anything that I can spread around my yard that will kill these blood-suckers?

Some of those mediceans (SP?) doesn't work for all dogs... but u could get a different kind OR look to see where they are coming from like if you pore puppy has a NASTY tick "mom" on em. And that gives mom a bad name!

Here are a couple of sites on natural flea & tick control:

Note:  Be very careful with tick collars.  Some (all?) of them are toxic to dogs if chewed on.  Some (all?) are extremely toxic to cats.[/color]

I pulled a tick off Nikki end of February... [&:]  And this is Massachusetts!

I pull ticks off my animals all year round.  Of course in the winter they are far and few between but they are there.  And..  I frontline and Revolution all year round, in the summer I rotate every two weeks.  My dogs and cats all get to roam through some pretty grown up areas so they are always picking those nasty little things up.

There is some sort of bug treatment you can spead on your lawn like you do fertilizer.  We just did our yard
last week.  I don't recall what the stuff was but I am pretty sure it said it kills ticks and fleas too.
We just dumped the bag in the speader and away we went.

If you want to use a natural insect killer, you could try Diatomaceous Earth  (you need to get the food grade kind, this is important). The big disadvantage is that you need to reapply after a rain and after each mowing so, depending on where you live, it is a feasible approach or not.

I second this product. We used it last year to combat the mosquitos, but a nice side benefit was the lack of problem with ticks and fleas. You could walk outside the boundary line of where we sprayed and you would start having problems with the buggers. The only bad thing, it will kill butterflys in both cocoon and mature form.

Thanks for the help!  I like the sounds of that Garlic Barrier except the label says that it repells rabbits and deer.  About 2 acres of yard is cleared and there is a bunny thicket on that side.  The other 1.5 acres is wooded and there are always deer coming up.  I don't want to run them off!  Any other suggestions?!?!?!

Well I can tell you that we still had rabbits in the yard after we sprayed - the damage to our garden was test to that! LOL We only sprayed the area that we keep mowed. The house sits on 5 acres, and we keep maybe 1.5 acres mowed during the summer. The rest is left for the wildflowers and wildlife and gets bush-hogged maybe twice during the summer. Doing it that way kept the area we (and the dogs) used the most bug free, and in conjuction with the Advantix we never had a constant flea/tick problem. So even if you do decide to use it, it doesn't run the wildlife off as much as you think.[:)]
