    monster chewer! quick question

I bought Bugsy one of those massive tires to chew with the hope it would last and stay in one piece
ha ha ha ha ha can you hear me laughing?
he is pulling it apart as I type - is this safe?  He seems to be making a pile of the larger chunks, but no doubt ingesting some
this was my last great hope for a 'durable' toy for him
    harumph

I have had the same experience with some of those tires. I bought a more expensive one. think i paid a little less then the kong and it has been great. still in one peice

thanks - I don't really know the difference in quality this was from Target, seems substantial, and is natural rubber - just didn't think he'd be able to destroy it.  DH just took it away from him

Sampson destroyed his in minutes and it was one of the better ones from petco.  Anyway, he did get sick from swallowing
some of the pieces.  He vomitted once and there were black chunks in it and he also had a little runny stool.

Sounds like my 3 dogs!  They have destroyed EVERY toy that I have bought for them EXCEPT a Kong!  It has made it, in one piece, for almost 2 years now!  I lather the inside of it with peanutbutter and that keeps them busy for hours!  Yet, even our pit bull hasn't been able to hurt it!  I recomend getting one!!!

tek did the same think to the "tirebiters" toy...[:@]  i was mad because it wasn't cheap!!!!  rosie will systematically dismantle tennis balls... i'll have to post some pics because she makes a neat little pile of the pieces[:D].

the ONLY things that have survived are the kongs!!  a bit more money, but worth it i suppose, except they get a little boring after a while, i think.

You may want to try a Galileo chew.  Bevo's has been really durable.  I've had it for 6 months & counting.  He chews so hard that the black kongs usually only last about 2 months for him.  It was a little pricey but it has proved to be well worth it.

"Tough Dog" chew bones made by Nylabone are great for my two GSDs & my Golden Retriever who are all big chewers. I just bought three offline this week (Beef, Ham & Turkey bone shapes) They last my crew about half a year. I do notice the Turkey is favored & will wear down more quickly because of it.

Galileo bones, Planet Dog toys, Kongs - all for hard chewers.  Of course, supervise anyway -you never know.

yeah, those "tirebiter" things are a rip-off. Claim they are so tough and sturdy. We had one last a total of ten seconds-- two dogs grabbed for it, and riip it went in half.

I noticed at Petsmart, there are two sizes.  I got the large one and it has lasted a long time about 4 months.  The Danes play tug-of-war with it and eventually it ripped apart.  When it ripped Newt and Marvin would chew it and bite off little rubber chunks and then my yard was a mess.

I got this one chew and tug toy that seem to have lasted a long time.  I got it from Petsmart and it 3 rubber rings intertwined.  Each of the 3 Danes grab a ring and play tug-o-war then pinwheel.  Newt and Marvin would  chew it and it seemed not to be damaged.  Its also great for playing fetch.

That little green spiked ball in my sig also has been around for a long time.

thanks everyone - he goes through a black kong every 4 to 6 weeks)  and has cracked Galileos.  I always replace the kongs as those definitely last the best. I stay away from nylabones since he did that.  He does have a Galileo that he just keeps in his crate in order to greet you with it when necessary [:D] - but he doesn't chew that one.  No idea why not.
He has destroyed 'invincible rings' and all other so-called tough toys.  the Large Cuz toys last but they are SO noisy.  anything with rope or fabric is out because he eats it and then there are poop issues (how much fun is pulling a rope poop out of your pup?!) Frisbees last about a minute or 1-2 throws.  Any of the retriever toys get eaten/chewed during fetch.  its a nightmare
Kongs aren't really toys and anything you put in there is only in there for a couple of minutes at best.  I might buy the really huge black one but I don't know what to put in there that will plug the hole.  ah well

He just has this belief that it is the mission and goal to destroy toys - I am so very very thankful that he hasn't decided to chew anything in the house that he wasn't given to chew.  An absolute miracle.
Anyway I'll let him finish off the tire under direct supervision and scratch those off the list of potential toys.
I attached a pic of him with his tire - you'll see it was a LARGE tire

kpwlee, Bugsy is gorgeous!  He must be nipping the toys bit by bit until destroyed.  Why not a large hard plastic ball where he can't get a grip on it with his teeth?

Must have teeth of steel! Beautiful dog btw.

Those floppy "soft bite" frisbees are pretty durable for playing fetch (even Baxter can't chew one up on the way back), but don't leave them out for "chew time".  How about a big jollyball, one of the horse size? those last quite awhile until the handle gets chewed off, and then you still have a ball left over.
