party ideas

I am planning to have a party next month to celebrate the anniversary of Abbi's arrival into our home. Abbi loves all people and dogs so I am not worried about that but I am looking for any creative ideas that any of you have. Maybe a recipe for a doggie cake...
So far I was thinking about invitations on dog bone shaped paper and doggie decorations.
Most importantly I want to tell people that if they were thinking of giving Abbi a gift that we would like either a donation to the Humane Society or a donation to the MS Walk that Abbi and I will be doing in May. I don't know how to word it though and I don't want to make people feel forced into doing it.

How about something like this:

Abbi and I would like to invite you to participate with us (in person or in spirit) at one or all of three events:

3pm on April 10th - the anniversary of Abbi's arrival at her furever home (no gifts please),
May15 - the MS walk,
April 24th - a day to schedule volunteer work in Abbi's honor at the Humane Society.

There may be a Humane Society event that you can substitute for #3.

That's a good idea. Couple of years ago, a little girl had her birthday party at the Humane Society, and everybody ate cake, and volunteered. Anyone who wanted to bring a gift was asked to bring something from the shelter's wish list. There was a big article in the paper about it. Maybe the Humane Society has an area where you could have a little party for Abbi?

That is a good idea! I want to have a party for my dog either on June 30th (anniversary of him being with me) or on October 12th for his 2nd b-day.
