Hey...we get newsworthy weather out here too :)

Not sure if it'll be as bad as they predict, but the weather folks are making me nervous with their warnings -

Statement as of 5:30 am PST on January 2, 2008 Special Weather Statement ... Dangerous winter storms headed for northern California... A series of very wet and windy Pacific storms will affect northern California beginning Thursday afternoon... continuing into Sunday. The first storm is forecast to arrive Thursday afternoon with rain developing in the valley... and snow in the mountains. Winds will strengthen and the precipitation may become heavy at times by Thursday evening with snow levels ranging from around 4000 feet over the mountains of Shasta County... to 5000 to 6000 feet in the Sierra. The second... more powerful system will impact our region on Friday with another round of heavy rain and mountain snow. This system is expected to generate very strong winds with possible gusts in the valley of 50 to 60 mph... and gusts in excess of 80 mph in the mountains. Little change in snow levels is expected with this second storm. We may see a brief lull in the winds and rain Friday night before another Pacific storm brings more rain and mountain snow to northern California Saturday into Sunday. Colder air is forecast to filter into northern California over the weekend resulting in lower snow levels. By the time the precipitation winds down on Sunday afternoon... total rainfall from the three storms could total several inches in the valley. Snowfall will be measured in feet in the Sierra with the potential for ten feet or more over the higher peaks. Travel conditions are expected to rapidly deteriorate by Thursday evening... with a high potential for blizzard conditions in the mountains by Friday. The high winds will also increase the potential for power outages due to fallen trees or tree limbs into power lines. While flooding is not anticipated in the mainstem rivers... smaller creeks and streams will need to be monitored for increased flood potential. You are urged to monitor National Weather Service statements and forecasts for the latest updates on this dangerous weather situation. Powered by the Weather Underground, Inc.

Cathy, I was watching the news earier today and I swear I saw pictures of semis blown over on the highway due to the winds in California. You better put weights on the doggies if you're planning on walking. Take care!

I'm in Reno ... so, I feel ya!  Were supposed to get the wind and rain from the storm, too... and then starting Friday/Saturday - Sunday snow. But looots of snow in the mountains.  My skis are in the shop getting waxed, picking them up in an hour LOL I'm ready for the freshiez!

    Hang on to your hat!

(And I didn't know you were so close!! YAY! HOW COOL! :)

Ewwwwwwwwwww, I HATE wind.  Stay safe, Cathy!!!!!

Wow!  You mean the "big storm" that they've been predicting weekly for the last month is actually on the way - for real??? I guess as long as I don't have to fish the covered yard furniture out of the pool ... sounds like it will be a good time to just stay in, get a fire going and curl up with a book or a puzzle. It wouldn't surprise me to find trucks blown over on the Grapevine - the wind really gets bad there.

Cathy, how are ya?  Has the storm passed?

Cathy, hope that everything is going ok.

Cathy, how are ya?  Has the storm passed?

Nope, it doesn't roll in until this this evening and then is supposed to last thru Sunday. Apparently it's three storm bands, so each has something special to bring with it.  Tomorrow is supposed to be the crazy winds and that's what has most people concerned. If we get a bunch of rain tonight and then winds (and more rain) tomorrow, the city of trees here could have big problems. DH starts his 48 hr shift tomorrow, so if it looks really bad, I'm going to call in sick and stay home. Part of me wants to laugh when watching the news this morning and they're showing all the supplies (water, flash lights, etc.) to have on hand. Like Joyce, I'm more worried about the BBQ ending up in the pool and stuff like that, but I doubt that I'll be wishing I'd stocked up on water Big Smile

If after the weekend passes and you haven't heard from Joyce, myself or the others that live in this neck of the woods, send boats, k? Wink

It's going to be a good one....

SNOWFALL AMOUNTS FROM 3 TO 5 FEET ARE EXPECTED OVER THE SIERRA
NEVADA BETWEEN THURSDAY EVENING AND SATURDAY MORNING ABOVE SNOW
LEVELS WITH SEVERAL MORE FEET OF SNOW POSSIBLE AT THE HIGHEST
ELEVATIONS. SNOWFALL IS LIKELY TO ACCUMULATE AT A RATE OF SEVERAL
INCHES PER HOUR AT TIMES THROUGH THE WARNING PERIOD...THE HEAVIEST
SNOWFALL EXPECTED FRIDAY AFTERNOON WITH THE STRONGER SECOND SYSTEM.
IN ADDITION TO THE HEAVY SNOWFALL...STRONG WINDS ARE EXPECTED.
WIND SPEED GUSTS IN EXCESS OF 65 MPH ARE EXPECTED WITH THE THURSDAY
NIGHT SYSTEM AND WIND SPEED GUSTS IN EXCESS OF 100 MPH POSSIBLE
ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON WITH THE SECOND SYSTEM. THE COMBINATION OF
HEAVY SNOW AND POWERFUL WIND WILL LIKELY CAUSE FREQUENT WHITEOUT
CONDITIONS. TRAVEL OVER THE HIGHER PASSES WILL BE VERY DIFFICULT...
IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE AT TIMES BETWEEN THURSDAY EVENING AND SATURDAY
    MORNING.

THE NEXT AND GREATER ISSUE TO CONTEND WITH IS THE INCREASING
SNOWFALL IN THE SIERRA ALONG WITH THE WINDS ESPECIALLY BEGINNING
FRIDAY MORNING. GUSTS OVER THE RIDGES WILL EASILY CLIMB ABOVE 120
MPH AND MAY VERY WELL PEAK OUT OVER 140 MPH FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND

THE SIERRA DURING INTENSE SNOWFALL WHICH WILL MAKING TRAVEL
TREACHEROUS...IF NOT COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE. SNOWFALL AMOUNTS OF 3 TO
5 FEET ABOVE 7000 FEET ARE LIKELY THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING...WITH
PERIODS WHERE THE SNOW MIGHT BE AS HEAVY AS 3-5 INCHES PER HOUR.
BLIZZARD CONDITIONS IN THE SIERRA WILL BE WIDESPREAD AS WINDS BLOW
AROUND SNOW ON THE GROUND AS WELL AS SNOW THAT CONTINUES TO FALL.
RARE BLIZZARD WARNINGS WERE ISSUED TO CONVEY THE SEVERITY OF THIS
STORM. WINDS SHOULD DECREASE OVERNIGHT FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY
MORNING AND SNOW WILL LIGHTEN UP SATURDAY MORNING AND
AFTERNOON...BUT TRAVEL IS DISCOURAGED. EVEN IF SNOW TAPERS OFF OR
HAS A 6-12 HOUR BREAK ON SATURDAY THIS MAY NOT BE ENOUGH TIME TO
CLEAR ROADS FROM FRIDAY NIGHTS STORM. THEN ANOTHER ROUND OF SNOW
WILL LIKELY MOVE IN ON SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY MORNING WHICH
WOULD FURTHER HINDER TRAVEL. IF ANYONE NEEDS TO TRAVEL ACROSS THE
SIERRA...THIS SHOULD BE COMPLETED ON THURSDAY...OR HELD OFF UNTIL
    MONDAY.

    Stay safe everybody!

Cathy, were you in this neck of the woods back in - I think - '93 or '94 when it started raining on New Years Day and didn't stop for a month? Cirby Creek in Roseville overflowed and the whole town was under water.  Bill Clinton was here surveying the damage and all you could see were the rooftops. Davis has excellent drainage, but the ground just couldn't absorb any more water and a huge puddle formed on the greenbelt by the tennis court at the end of my street.  There were two ducks in there one morning who must have thought they were in the wildlife pond just a bit north of them and were probably wondering where all their friends were. Smile

Yep, I've lived in this area since '87.  Was that the storm/flood where they did that dramatic rescue by helicopter of the dog on the roof? I didn't live too far from Cirby Creek then and I actually don't now either, but I'm far enough away that it's not a concern. I'm more worried about my backyard. If it rains long and hard, my pool will overflow and that could be a huge mess. I also have 3 evergreen trees that are large enough to do serious damage if they fall over. I emailed my boss and told him I'm going to work from home tomorrow. I don't want to be on the road but mostly, I'll go nuts sitting here in my office worrying about the dogs and the house.

For some weird reason, no matter how long and hard it rains, the pool doesn't overflow.  But ... if I'm raising the water level and forget to turn the water off, the patio table is floating across the yard in an hour. Surprise I seriously don't understand that.  Maybe some day I'll remember to ask the pool guy.
