Khoale was mauled

Random thought.... if she does start to become dehydrated, can you do sub-q fluids? It's pretty easy to do, and would keep her from getting so "down" from dehydration. She may be too painful and groggy to drink much of anything. I had a dog who had kidney failure, and giving her fluids made a big difference in her day to day function.

Poor thing!! I hope she feels better super soon!

You've already gotten lots of great advice but I just wanted to add how sorry I am that this happened to Khoale and I hope that she heals fully and quickly. I'll keep you both in my thoughts and prayers.

More prayers coming your way!  Wish I had something to say that could help make it all better :(

    How is Khoale doing today?

    • Gold Top Dog

So sorry, best wishes.  I have no suggestions except for maybe a stay at the vet.  We have a 24X7 animal hosipital by us and I would feel more comfortable if my dog was being interviencelly given fluids and monitored 24X7. Don't know if that is an option

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog! Sending warm wishes and a speedy recovery your way!

How's Khoale?  The boyz & I are sending all the good vibes we can to you & her.  Please tell her that we're all pulling for her & sending her the strongest i-dog vibes we can.  Ask Talus, they work!  If you can give her some gentle pets & a kiss or 2 from me.  Poor thing.

She's doing the same today. I can't let the Ace wear off or she gets panicked with the pain, runs and trips around on three legs crying out, and can't settle, it seems the rimadyl alone does not work to keep her comfortable. she is able to hobble outside on three legs to do her business.. thank goodness we left the ramp up frmo Oliver's TPO surgery. She ate a small breakfast today which I was very happy about... it means she is still in good spirits to a certain degree since she's already a picky eater. (Although if she hadn't eatten the TO, duckling slow cooker stew + egg I'd have panicked myself :)) She got me up several times last night crying out and whining. we slept downstairs so she didnt' have to move and I went in several times to soothe her which seemed to work...gentle petting on her non-injured half of her body calms her. She's licking the wounds and sutures too much so I've got calls into all the dog people I know to see if they have any elizabethan collars (can't imagine her tolerating that well though) I could have sworn there was a way to make a soft one with a towel? does that work?

Someone mentioned her staying overnight somewhere... yes ideally that would have been better, but I'm up in way northern NH and the country vet I went to was great but no one stays in the office there overnight. As a sled dog she's hugely packed oriented, can't be left alone or she freaks, much less in a crate... she previously broke two canines when I tried to leave her in a crate. she was better off coming home with me so I could supervise her and she wouldn't be alone. The closest e-vet is 3.5/4 hours away one way!

She gingerly steps on the leg at times so I guess that is better than non-use completely.

I feel so bad for you and Khoale, having to watch your dog in pain is one of the worst things.  We're sending healing vibes and prayers for a full recovery your way.

Please give her some gentle pets on her good side for all the i-doggers and let her know we are all pulling for her this time!

Thanks for the update.  Is your vet open tomorrow?  Maybe you can get some metacam.  That seemed to help Trucker with his post neuter pain.  PLEASE keep us posted on her progress.

I don't think that I'd be letting her use that leg at all. Normally with muscle injuries in humans (and otto can correct me if I'm wrong here), you are told to stay off the muscle and give it complete rest for a period of time, then slowly start working at it again to strengthen it after it heals. That's just my 2 cents though. I'm no vet.

Maybe you can give her a sedative to help her sleep through the pain?

    • Gold Top Dog

Jewliee...the vet gave me little instruction as to use or no use of the leg...

She is on a sedative, acepromazine to help her sleep, and it is working for the most part. I can't stop her from using the leg... a sling won't work due to the inner thigh and lower stomach injuries.

I hope today she feels a little better. I really wish a Christmas Miracle for Khoale, I hope tomorrow she'll feel a lot better.

I'd think that she should use it as little as possible as well.. but I am at a total loss as to how to pull that off.
