    Whats Your Signature Holiday Recipe?

mine is usually cheese cake and/or pumpkin bread... i missed the chance to do pumpkin bread this year.. didnt ever get around to buying the pumpkin and i refuse to use canned or instant anything. sure its more work, but the results are ten times better in my opinion.

today i made rum balls for the first time.... used an old recipe a friend sent me. i had been putting it off for a couple of years then decided to get bold and just dive in(have also been promising my husband that i would do this, so he was stoked when i finished making them). it was actually fun, and... really tasty Big Smile i've never eaten a rum ball in my life until tonight. So i might have a new favourite.. theyre a lot easier than making cheese cakes, i'll say that much!

So... whats yours? and feel free to share recipes!!

my step-mother used to make Buckeyes at Christmas time, and even shipped them to us from NH to FL when we lived there.

My mom always makes doughboys - something I couldn't possibly explain well enough, but consider it a breakfast item that has to be prepped the night before, in a meticulous way, in order for the dough to turn out correctly the next morning.  She makes those for both Christmas and Thanksgiving morning.

My sister makes a kahlua cheesecake.

I have yet to create a signature holiday recipe -but Gina's sounds good to me...

I mostly just make my Christmas Cake which is an heirloom family recipe.  #butter, # confectioner's sugar, eggs, a ton of vanilla, sweet fruits (raisins, pineapple, cherries, coconut) and Mogan David concord wine (and I would NOT **dare** to change that -- it's that sickish sweet wine that makes it come out right LOL).  Then after baking you wrap each cake in cheesecloth soaked in more wine.  Lordy -- particularly with a bit of whipped cream on top it is unbelievably good.  Mom used to make it and now I'm the one who does it.  When David's Dad and sister were living I used to ship it to Scotland.  I can't wait for Christmas Eve to cut it! LOL

The dogs go NUTS when I make it -- the smell of that sugar, butter and vanilla wafts thru the house ... mmmmmmmmmm

How do you make rum balls?  There will be about 10 people over to my house for dinner on Christmas (only 3 of which are family) lol

My father loooooves rumballs, I make candy cane cheesecake!

Mine is the home-made eggnog recipe out of the original Joy of Cooking (like from the 50s). It takes all day to make (there's a lot of letting various stages of it chill in between adding things) and contains more fat, sugar and alcohol than any sane person would ever want to consume. Per family tradition, the alcohol in it is cognac all the way. VSOP baby!

I don't make it every year because it is a pain and it's so potent and rich no one can drink more than a tiny thimblefull and I always wind up with leftovers (and everyone makes this huge deal about how bad it is for you--seriously people, it's the holidays! for one day just get the hell over it and have a good time!). But I love it and growing up it was a family tradition to have a little Christmas eve and then another little glass Christmas morning while opening presents.

I make Chex Mix (very similar to the recipe on the Chex box, but the brands of ingredients you use really make a difference), Puppy Chow (the human kind!), and these very bland almondy falvored cookies (shortening, egg, flour, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, almond extract).

I make "David's Dreambars". It's a recipe out of an old Christmas recipe book I got from my mother. Basically it is a grahem cracker crust, with shredded coconut, pecans, and white, milk and dark chocolate pieces layered with sweetened condenced milk poured over the top to hold it together before baking. They are really good, and always a huge hit. They are really rich though.

I'm actually going to make some cookies tonight. I'm having Christmas breakfast with my dad tomorrow and we are going to exchange gifts and I always make him a ton of baked goods because my step mother can't cook.

    I make candy cane cheesecake!

Me too!  I make these chocolate-cheesecake-candy cane squares that are soooooo good.  I even found a neat version of the recipe on FoodNetwork.com this year, I think I'll try it on the girls at work and see what they think.

It's not a dessert, but I'm always responsible for the deviled eggs as well.  The original recipe came from my mom's antiquated (but awesome) Betty Crocker cookbook, and I've tweaked it to much success!  My whole family loves deviled eggs, so I usually have to spend quite a few hours hard-boiling and peeling.

Each year I try out a new dessert, and this year I'm trying "S'More Rockin' Reindeer Ravioli" found on FoodNetwork.com (here).  My husband's family has a tradition where his grandma makes homemade ravioli on Christmas Eve, so I thought I would get into the spirit and make chocolate ravioli!  We'll see how it goes. I don't have anything that I make specifically for the holidays, but pretty much any time there's a bunch of people over I make a particular appetizer - Baked Brie with Caramelized Onions. You cook sliced onions and garlic in butter with herbs du provence until golden, sprinkle with a little white and brown sugar and some Chardonnay wine, and cook some more. Then you cut off the top rind of a brie, spoon the onions on top, and bake it in the oven until the cheese is gooey and the onions sink in. It's wonderful spooned over sliced baguette french bread! I'm making it for a Christmas party Saturday night, and also on Christmas day.

I love baked brie!! I normally make it wrapped in pastry. It's been a Christmas breakfast tradition of ours for as long as I can remember.
