My response to a parallel thread:

I don't know if it was you or someone else on that other thread mentioned that they would like to have debates/discussions about certain topics. I can understand that...I bet they would be facinating to read. I was wondering if we could do something like that by adding the word Debate in the subject line, like "Debate" Haltis or Martingales?

Excellent point: to consider the information that is presented by each thread's original poster. Just like dogs, people generally find it easier to follow rules, once they are clearly stated!

It is the OP's responsibility to set the tone for their thread, to be a kind of micro-moderator, of sorts. We are adults, we can say what we want from each other: debate, advice, confirmation, sympathy, etc. People could be a lot more descriptive and careful with their subject lines! [X(] I'm not suggesting respondents will automatically "follow the rules", but, hey, how about everyone taking responsibility!?

Often times, OP's are hot and worked up after a stressful event, we are looking for help/reacting to something. SO, our posts are not clear or are not focused. If we are new or sensitive, we sometimes complain about our rough treatment, but take no responsibility for our messy initial query. Respondents could, and often do, help us focus our inquiry, but, OTOH ...

Many of us come here seeking FREE advice for problems. How snappy of us to criticize the tone of voice in which free advice is dispensed to us!! I hate seeing really knowledgeable people apologizing for their "tone" when newbies bruise easily from responses to a hyper, messy original post!

I like this idea too and it goes to the heart of what I was talking about earlier.  Maybe more newbies will come away with much needed advice instead of just debate.

Some of these discussions seem to me like the equivalent of questioning gravity.

You'll have to excuse my ignorance...Paleogravity would be?

I want to share a couple things with you all that reminded me of this topic...especially in regard to how not every solution/method works for every person, situation, or animal.   That the "right" or best way is subjective.  That the rules and facts are constantly changing.

Yesterday, Jack Hannah (sp?) was a guest on Ellen.  He brought a bunch of different animals with him, including two Great Horned Owls.  Well, Ellen starting hooting at the owl she was holding and the owl hooted right back at her!  She was excellent at the hooting...and she kept doing it and so did the owl, LOL.  Jack was shocked and said that in his 30 years of experience that has never happened.

I massage horses and dogs for a living.  Yesterday, the horse I worked on did something really cool in response to massage that I've never seen in my 7 years of working with them professionally.  I'm still reeling from the experience.

So, just as we think we've got a handle on things - getting comfortable in our knowledge - they change.  That's why I try to be as open as possible to learning what each of has to bring to the table here.

It's just an interesting (and somewhat strange) theory I stumbled across a few years back which puts forth the idea that perhaps the earth's gravity has not always been a constant, and was less at the time of the dinosaurs - explaining their great size, and ultimate extinction.

It's tied to an expanding earth theory, tectonic plate theory, the continent of Pangea, extinction level events, and the observations of present day plants and animal size limits, and how animals move, etc...

More "sci-fi" than "sci-fact" stuff, but I somehow find it interesting due to my interest in animals. [;)]

ETA: Okay, now you got me thinking about "it" again! [8D]

If you're interested, do a general net search of "paleogravity theory", and it will take you to a few sites.

Hey, I hoot at the owls here in the woods and they hoot back! Anyone can do it, you just have to be a good hooter!
(Okay, that sounds silly, go ahead, have a giggle [:D] )

I didn't read this whole thread, but I do have a little bit more to say (that doesn't include hooting [8D]).

I haven't had any hurt feelings for a while on this board. Quite a while. I can generally see a troll a mile away....and recently ran into one on another thread. This person took the whole thread and bent it to her purpose so heavily that it was moved to a different category on the board!

That's pretty heavy, in my opinion. It bothers me when one person can be such an jerk that it messes up what everyone else is doing. I don't think it's fair to the community here.

But you know, I just decide it isn't worth my time to pursue it. I said my piece and I'm now DONE. Even if this poster was calling me names and stuff, I just blew it off.

It helps that you guys know who I am and what I'm like. Heck, I've been here for years.

So I don't have any fear of posting now. I used to, but not anymore.

You know, after just responding to more attacks on the USA over on the CM threads,

Talking about hurt feelings [;)] , dont worry Anne, everything is fixed now [:D]

Thank you, Janet, although I am familiar with all definitions of the word. [:)]  It still does not make it right. Who's the first person you think of when "dictatorial person" is spoken? Probably not someone you prefer to hang around; certainly not someone I'd like to hang around, that's for sure.

I personally think there are certain words that are derogatory, no matter the many definitions it may posess. As much as I am for freedom of speech, certain words should be used selectively, and not used in a personal attack.

Anyhow, today is a new day and it really is good to see that there are logical people on this board.

Well darn it Ullr!  You fascists have all the fun!  Where does that leave us cynics and sarcastic banterers!?

(I would be the cynic by the way...though I can be pretty sarcastic xD  It's a staple food, that sarcasm).

    Agreed!!!

logic, and common sense should be the primary tools for judgement.

I find that logic rules only when the emotions have first been taken care of.  For instance, if changing one's mind means admitting to yourself that you have not done the best you could have done for your pet, it can be a very hard thing to do.

In addition, it was throughly impressed upon me that "common sense is not common" when my ex (masters degree in molecular biology and one of a 2-man team who rewired our house) decided that he could shorten a live power line by cutting one side at a time.  [sm=eek.gif]    (No, he didn't kill himself, but he could have.  He was knocked on his butt and my pruning shears had a big hole in them.)

My ex is a physicyst (spelling intentional [;)]). He split ions, or something like that. He also is an enginerd, er, I meant engineer. Talk about dissecting every finite detail!

Fortunately, my new and improved man is polar opposite, and for good reason. He runs a restaurant. I have officially given him the title of "Food and Beverage Chairman" of the house. I miss him. He's in Italy doing "product research" on food and wine right now. Lucky dog. He barely knows how to change a lightbulb, so I have no fear of him getting shocked. That must have been scary!

Edited to ask: Do you know what kind of owls you have?  I adore Barred Owls.
