muttluks vs neopaws

    muttluks vs neopaws

So I know we've had threads on this before, but I haven't seen one this year so I thought maybe there are some new folks with experience around.

I'm debating between muttluks and neopaws.  I like neopaws but they are a bit pricy, though they have an older model on "sale" that is a bit better in terms of price, but not as reinforced and fits a bit smaller.  Muttluks seem easier to fit, but we have a cheaper knock-off version and they just don't stay on very well.

Anyone have any thoughts?  We need to buy something and hopefully soon......

    Thanks!

we've used both and the neopaws are superior in every way. Have you looked at the new boots ruffwear makes? If our neopaws ever wear out I'm going to try a pair of those.

I have the ruffwear boots for my guys.  They fit very nicely & seem to be holding up quite well.

The Muttluks aren't cheap if you blow one or two everytime the dogs go out.

Maska won't pee with boots on LOL.  We use Musher's Secret.

So my thoughts on the ruff wear ones are that they seem to JUST cover the paw, not really the leg, and we get several inches of snow at at a time... and when we visit family in western NY they may have FEET of snow.  I'm afraid of snow getting into them.  Are there other ruff wear boots that are better?

I'm thinking the neopaws ones are the way to go....

mudpuppy, do you find them hard to fit?  Sammy seems to be too big for a M but a wee bit small for a M+, and the cheaper sale ones are in a 4 pk and only M+ (or S+ or XL+, but those are way off).  Do you think they will fall off the back paws at all?  Wondering if I should just bite the bullet and pay the full price for the ones with the reinforced heel - any problems with the heel falling apart or rubbing?  There must be a reason they reinforced the heel on the newer ones!  And that way I can to get the back a wee smaller than the front.

spiritdogs, do you find yourself going through a lot of mushe's secret?  Is it like vaseline-consistency?  Do you reapply every single time you go for a walk?

I guess I've given up on muttluks since our imitation ones just don't stay on, but maybe they are imitation for a reason?  Actually even if they did stay on, they have worn through the rubbery coating on the bottom since on occassion there's been enough salt where we walked on the plain sidewalk for a short distance and it torn them to shreds. I guess something like neopaws would hold up better in that respect.

I have the same problem. I don't know if I should get Neopaws or Muttluks.  I like that the fleece lined Muttluks have long cuffs that go up the leg a little higher than Neopaws and that they seem to be easier to put on.  We tried on a pair of regular Muttluks in Petsmart and they seem to stay on pretty good and my dog was comfortable, the key is to have a very snug fit with Muttluks. The one thing that I noticed about Neopaws is that they have straps wrapping all the way around over the wrist and Muttluks have only have one strap just below the wrist joint (below fifth toe), it seems to me that wrapping the joint at the wrist would make it hard for a dog to bend his foot all the way as in running.  I'm planning for my dog to be able to run in her shoes and we have very deep snow here in MN so I think that Muttluks are my best choice.

NicoleS what's the name of your Muttluk imitation boots? Are they EXTREME ALL WTHR BOOT by any chance.  I was going to get those since Muttluks are little on the expensive side but now I'm afraid of the soles ripping.

What about TheDogBootCompany.com..  Has anybody tried their boots?

we have the original version of the neopaws- haven't lost any (unlike the muttluks) and they haven't worn out. I'd suggest ordering a size slightly bigger than you think you need, and the first time you put them on may be a little frustrating. They don't seem to restrict the dog's movement. Mind you, we only use them on hard frozen ground- the Danes don't seem to mind soft snow, but hard frozen ground tears up their feetpads and snaps off their toenails.

If you're just trying to keep salt from irritating your dog's feet musher's wax is an economical alternative.

I actually don't remember the name of the imitation ones, but we got them at Petco if that's any help.  They were maybe $10-12 after season sale.  I'd think the soles would be okay on snow, but sometimes we have to cross the street or walk on a clear sidewalk or something and that was what did any damage.  I also don't like the outside being fleece, personally, since snow sticks to it and the boots are wet for several hours after getting home.  But, that's preference on my end.  I'm not sure what the outside of Muttluks are made of, but these are fleece.

mudpuppy, thanks for telling your experience.  I think I'm going to order the M+ -- which is a wee bit on the bigger side, but since they are the old model they say they fit a bit tighter than the new ones -- but they only have one size chart, and I have to say their email customer service could use a lot of help, and calling them only got me a machine.  So  I'm not sure if the size chart is the new one?  I'd guess it is, so these M+ would fit a little tighter anyway.  And Sammy's nails haven't been trimmed in 2-3 weeks so even if they run only to a M I think we'd still be okay.  And his back paws are a little smaller but not a whole size smaller, so I'm actually a bit worried that they might be a tiny big.  In that case, I'd buy baby socks to put underneath!!!  But you're right, if they are even a tiny bit small there's no way to get them to work, so the only choice is to go a wee bit big.  And I can't wait to try to get them onto Sammy's paws!

Now you guys changed my mind! I'm going to get the M sized regular performance Neopaws for 40 bucks! I looked them over and they do seem to be comfortable (the videos on the website helped).

NicoleS how much does your dog weigh? Is he the boxer in your avatar? I can't decide between M or M+ either.

And Neopaws come in pairs so you can get two different sizes for front and back if your back feet are smaller.

    • Gold Top Dog

Sammy is the dog in my avatar, he's about 47 lbs, boxer/beagle mix we think.  Neopaws do come in pairs but I wanted the high performance ones that around abour $29/pair so I'm going to go for the sale ones I think, but they only come in 4's

That's funny our dog's feet seem to be the same size but my dog is a lot smaller than yours (26 pounds). It must mean that my dog's feet are too big. lol.
    • Gold Top Dog

You can kind of see in my signature that his paws are rather small for his size - he's also very tall and very long, characteristics of the beagle we think is in him, or some other hound.

I'm hoping to order the boots tonight or tomorrow so hopefully we will get them soon and update!

If you care to use my "referral code" (I have no idea what it does) it is 894127 :)  Just placed my order!

Thanks for the code! I see that sale you are talking about and I'm thinking on getting those boots but I can't decide on S+ or M+.
