    rwbeagles- "The Elephant Man"

It was on again tonight. I just love this movie even tho it makes me sob. I allowed my daughter to watch a bit with me and she was riveted. She was absolutely flabbergasted that the movie was about a real person who really looked like that, and lived that life....she got so upset when he was treated unkindly.

We only watched a bit but I think it was a good thing. We talked for a while after about how people's appearances doesn't always tell the whole story, and how teasing and such can be so hurtful. She wanted to see the whole thing but I thought it was a bit much for a young one for now, but promised her we'd watch it all the way thru together someday.

I remember this movie affected me deeply when I first saw it as a ***.

Anyone else have a movie that changed them a bit, made them grow up a bit? And no Billy, "Porky's" doesn't count!

The people at the nursing home were watching it tonight.  (the boyz and I went)  I'd forgotten Anthony Hopkins was in it.  It really is a great movie.

Wow!  I haven't seen the Elephant Man in ages!  It's funny you mentioned Porky's ... that was on about a month or two ago, it was still hilarious.  I liked the Man In the Iron Mask (original, no Leonardo DiCaprio).  I remember watching that with my dad.  Oh, I know, remember Mask, with Cher.  That was a good movie.  Kind of like the Elephant Man (sorta).  That was sad, and I remember my daughters watching part of it w/ me also, and having pretty much the same conversation you did w/ your daughter.

Weird you should mention that. It's a favorite movie of mine from way back, but DH has never seen it (despite being a huge David Lynch fan), so we have it out from Netflix right now and will most likely watch it this week.

The Andromeda Strain (book also) made me want to go into medicine. I was also really struck by seeing the tape versions of Laurence Olivier's Richard III and Polanski's Macbeth. I'm  huge Shakespeare nut, from words to stage to movies they've always affected me quite a bit.

Do you mean the The Man in the Iron Mask with Richard Chamberlain? I love that one. Or is there another one I am missing? He also did a wonderful Count of Monte Cristo. Definitely stuck with my brain's "revenge fiber" ;)

Wait, I'm 23. I should be liking stuff made after 2000 right? And still going to keggers .... Guess I didn't get the memo about modernism.
