Is your dog allowed on furniture? Why or why not?

Growing up, dogs were never allowed on the furniture at our house. I don't really remember my mom's shelties very well, but they never snuck up on sofas or even asked to be on the furniture. My mom's current dog will come up if invited - my mom used to "sic" her on my brother and I when we wouldn't get out of bed - nothing like waking up to a little corgi herding your toes!

Beau is allowed on my bed only - but I don't own a sofa or anything else he could get up on. I will be moving into my very own house come the spring (I am so excited) but I don't think I will allow him on the furniture. I'll probably ban him from the bed again like I did when I moved to my current location - but I found out that while I was away at school he was snoozing on my bed! So now we're back to snuggling on the nights when he decides he wants to sleep with me. He's a great snuggler and I love the company.

I was going to say, I go back and forth between letting them on the furniture.  But after reading these, I guess I don't really.  They are allowed up, but only if I invite them.  Sometimes I don't invite them for a month, sometimes its all the time.  They aren't really about the furniture anyway.  Both of them will jump up for a bit, but before long they have both migrated back to the floor.

Mine are not allowed up on the furniture.  I don't want visitors to have to deal with dog hair all over their clothes, & I like to be able to sit down on the couch without having to lint roll myself afterwards.

They are allowed in the bed, by invitation only.

Honor's allowed, but only by invitation.  Although we recently found out that she's been sneaking up onto our bed when we're in a different room! Stick out tongue

Nemo is allowed on the furniture.

I even had to get new furniture after I got him.  My comfy chair wasn't big enough for both of us so I decided to go with one of those chair and a half thingies but wound up with a small loveseat that works great.  The old chair found new life as his bed beside the computer.  He's not always on the furniture and often is not interested but there are 2 surefire ways to invie him.  (1) Pick up his comb - he'll be in your lap so fast i'll make your head spin and (2) put an afghan out.  I'm a knitter and when it starts getting chilly the afghans come out.  What is it about dogs and yarn?

The foot of my bed is his "safe place". Anything he gets - toys, chewies or treats - he's off to the bedroom.  Usually if I can't find him he's on the bed waiting to play.

I figure as my companion he should be as comfortable as I am.  He's not destructive and I deal with the hair.

Growing up, the dog was only allowed on furniture when my mother or I thought the other one wasn't looking. Or when neither of us was looking and the dog wanted to get comfortable (lol!). The dog also "wasn't allowed upstairs," which meant "only allowed when I'm at my dad's for the weekend" and "only allowed when my mother is out of town," lol!

Rascal is allowed on the furniture by invitation only. BF doesn't really like him on furniture (shedding), but I like the company sometimes and like how happy he is to be snuggling with his humans. However, he can tend to be a bit territorial at times, so we're careful to make it clear that he's only allowed sometimes because it's not *his* furniture. He has a good "off" and an excellent "go to your pillow" for when he gets a bit uppity about his sofa privileges :-p

Ginny is allowed on pretty much everything. However, at bedtime, she has to go to her bed and get off of mine.

All it takes is a "Ginny? Go bed!" She literally hurtles off my bed into hers - not cause she wants to, but I think she is just so proud that she actually *knows * a commandWink

I totally agree with this.  And my dog wouldn't think of getting on furniture when I'm in the house, but when I leave she has one recliner she gets up into.  I've decided to pretend she doesn't do this and she's decided to pretend she'd never think of getting on the furniture.  The bed is a definite NO zone, since I would hate hate hate sleeping in dog hair and drool.

`Sasha has location guarding issues that she came with (at 3 months old).  They are mild, but we decided she was not allowed on furniture. Then along came Ivan and he was a nut, so no dogs on the furniture made even more sense.  I supply a ridiculous amount of dog beds.

Ivan has been gone a while, and around a year ago we began allowing Sasha on the couch, upon invitation, very rarely. I'm pretty sure she was sneaking up there when we away, but she is solid about not getting up without permission if we're home.

In the last 6 months, she has been allowed on our bed infrequently. She'd be allowed more frequently, because she keeps the bed warm Smile but she has shown one instance of being guardy towards my daughter. It is a defensive kind of guarding - she only does it when in a high backed bed or snuggled in.  She never does it somewhere flat. I think she feels slightly cornered when she's snuggled in. (Our bed has a cushy down comforter).

Sasha is not a cuddly dog, and she doesn't seem to mind her beds. I make sure they are comfy, and often put blankets under the beds to make them extra soft. Right now she's sleeping near me, hugging her comforter and pillow. (Both made for humans, but put down for her)

The dogs are not allowed on the furniture.  They are at my boyfriend's mom's house and it is her rule.  Guss used to be allowed on the bed, but it is an air bed now and we don't want it ruined.  He has a super comfy bed though.  And he only tries to get half way on the furniture to snuggle.

Our dogs aren't allowed on our furniture. They have a couch that is theirs (we don't sit on it). They are allowed on our laps when invited, but don't get into our chairs unless we're in them first. Wink

Why? Because my husband is sensitive to animal hair and dander. If it were just me, they'd probably sleep with me as long as there were no behavior problems.

Cherokee's allowed on my bed (I change my pillowcase every night, and my sheets at least once a week), and the armchair (there's often a sheet thrown over it, but it's old and some nasty tapestry material, so I don't care if she gets it dirty or hairy) in my bedroom. When we had vinyl couches I'd invite her up occasionally, but now we have light-colored fabric couches, so she's not allowed up and she doesn't even try.

LOL, I just remembered this funny thing that happened a few weeks ago.  We were in the process of packing and there was stuff all over our apartment.

Willow has one of those big thick orthopedic beds with the egg crate stuff inside.  Well, I was getting tired and I went over to snuggle with her on her bed.  It's big enough for both of us to be pretty comfortable.  Well, I dozed off.

I woke up on HER bed and she was up on the couch--in the spot I usually sit in!

they are allowed up on couches and chairs (not beds),

I'm the opposite, LOL! I don't allow my dog on the furniture because he does not always smell very nice and he drools. The fur doesn't bother me as it can be vacuumed. I'm sure my guests would not appreciate sitting on smelly furniture. I know I don't! I do let him up on the beds however, although he is not allowed to sleep with us. The bedding I can wash so it's no big deal.

Both Rosie and Trooper are allowed on the furniture, when invited. Rosie never wants to though... she'd rather be on the floor to pick up any fallen crumbs. Trooper will only go up if there's someone there to cuddle him.
