    Short/easy dog training books?

I'm thinking a dog training book might make a good stocking stuffer for my BF's mother for Christmas, since they have a new dog who never learned "puppy basics" and can be pretty frustrating at times (plus it's been 13 years since they had a puppy last), but 1) I don't want to be insulting about it ("Here's how to train your dog since you suck at it" is not a great way to ingratiate myself), 2) BF's mom has very little free time to read anything lengthy, and 3) it would have to be fun/interesting enough to catch her attention. I want it to be like a "this book is *SO* cool that even though you probably know everything anyway I thought you might enjoy it!" kind of present.

I loaned her my copy of "Calming Signals" and she thought that was pretty cool. But it doesn't really have tips on what to do about the signals you're seeing. She needs a refresher course on everything from housetraining to why yelling "SIT!" isn't more effective than just quietly saying "sit," lol! (She's not mean to the dogs, she just seems to think that volume is necessary to give commands, rofl!)

So, SmartPeople - any ideas? :)

I really like "The everything" series of books. they have the everything dog training, the everything tricks book etc. For someone like me who doesn't want to read a bunch of background and just wants to get to the point, it was perfect. Numbered instructions, etc.

I like Mudpuppy's idea, but here's just the book. I have a feeling $50 is more than Cita wants to spend on a stocking stuffer. Wink

A really good basic book is How to Teach a New Dog Old Tricks by Dr. Ian Dunbar. Also Positive Perspectives by Pat Miller.

I like Peggy Tillman's CLicker Training With Your Dog. It breaks everything down into tiny steps, you can pick and choose what behaviors you want to train, and it's just generally fun and useful.
