    Oh doG!!!

For over an hour this morning, DH watched this squirrel just parked on the edge of the patio screen door.  It eventually came down low enough so Biscotti could spot it.  So she barked at it for 15 minutes.  I was laughing at her because she seemed too slow to realize she could go out the doggie door to continue (hey, I was a bit slow in realizing I needed my camera!).

Buffy was quicker at running outside, so Biscotti followed.  The squirrel panicked and had to jump down, where once again Buffy was quickest in grabbing the cornered squirrel.  She refused to drop it for me, so I grabbed the hose hoping to squirt her into dropping it, but she went out of range.  By this time, said squirrel was a goner, but she just seemed to want to play with her warm stuffie.

So Biscotti laid down close by, with a look that said, "Well, if you don't want to eat it, then I will."

I'm not sure who got it...couldn't watch.  Off to see when they last had their Interceptor.

Buffy, first, you look awesome!  You have definitely come into your own.  Just shows what a good home can do for a girl.

You do Grady proud in your squirreling.

Oh, crud.  Pofi just got one, too!  It's snowing quite steadily today and I had let the dogs into the yard while I'm searching for my missing boot (unquestionably put somewhere I'll never find it by Po) and I thought they'd have gotten bored on their own, but when I opened the door, and then called, no one came.  So I went out and Mia was staring  intently in his direction and pointing, and I couldn't see Pofi's head because he was half behind a tree, but I could see he was standing and sort of pawing the ground with a back foot/leg.  As I approached I saw the squirrel and called him off.  Thinking it was dead but I could stop the eating of it.  But it isn't and now I don't know what to do!

Giggle, I guess we need to be quicker with the snacks!  Biscotti ate one a few years ago, and nothing disastrous happened to her...other than not getting any more breakfast from me!

Yeah, Pofi swallowed one whole a few months ago when DH walked into the yard to see it dangling from his mouth.  So I'm pretty pleased I actually got him to leave it this time.  And I got them in the house and checked on the poor thing only to find it was still alive.  It seemed shockish and I debated trying to "dispatch" it right away to be more humane, but there was no blood and I thought it might come back.  So I actually put it in a box with a towel and covered it with another towel to see if it might warm up and the shock might wear off.

That did seem to happen - it was more animated after about 1/2 hour, but even when it made it out of the box, it's limbs just weren't working.  I really waited too long, but finally put it inside of two garbage bags and tied it up really tightly after pushing most of the air out.  I should have done it an hour earlier, but it was looking at me and I just couldn't.  It was all fluffy with its winter coat - very pretty and not a mark on it.  But the internal damage had to be too great.

Now there's another squirrel who seems to be searching for this one and calling for it and Pofi is whipped right up into a frenzy!

Oye!! Yikes!! ... those are some fast little bassets you have! :)  And so bravely protecting the house/yard.

Nikki claims she's gonna have rabbit one of these days.. Logan is still way too interested in what they leave behind Indifferent

I'm sorry you had to witness it, but they have to take a free meal where they get it!

GOOD DOGGIES!  I hate squirrels, ever since they started to live in my house!  I have open eaves and I was (am) having problems w/ birds, then I guess the squirrels found out that the 'condo' was open to small game and evicted the birds and moved in!  That's why Hawks are my friends!  I just keep a close eye on my wittle Tabitha!
