As if he wasn't smart enough...

So I already knew I had a houdini.  When he was 6 months old he could get out of his crate, and I knew that he figured out how to open doors.
I just thought that since he hadn't done it in FOREVER he maybe forgot.

So yesterday hubby and I head outside for a little while, *trying to get the fence up before Christmas* came in the house he had our bedroom door open and the bathroom door too!! Okay no biggie, I just can't leave things out on the floor for him to chew on. Got that one solved.

Then we had to go out last night for a few hours....came home only to find that he has figured out how to OPEN THE GARBABGE.  Not just a bag, but one of those stainless steel step cans! I can't be sure if it was a one time thing, a fluke or if it was planned, but I just couldn't believe it when I saw garbage strew about on the floor.  The dog won't take food off the counter, but apparently the garbage is a-okay if he can get in it!

     Confused

Dogs really do surprise us sometimes!  Your dog definately sounds smart!  The lab/shepherd/collie that we had up until Octoebr 2006 (he died at 13) at our old house he figured out how to open the front and side door, and also at the side door, he figured if he rang the door bell when he was outside, someone would come to let him in.  The first time we heard the side door ring (it chimed only once, front door chimed twice) and we opened the side door confused, only to find him standing there wagging his tail at us lol we were all dumbfounded. From then on, rather than barkign to let us know he wanted in, he rang the doorbell!

I think dogs are a lot smarter than people give them credit for :D

Oh yes dogs are plenty smart! We had a female GSD that slit open the plastic on a package of steaks I had just taken out and took one, just ONE steak out! Shiloh, our 2 yr old pyrenees knows how to spell, and also knows that if she waits long enough you'll get her a slice of cheese to come in. She figured this out once when we were in a hurry I suppose. Dog's are very very smart. And no, we don't give them adequate credit! Big Smile

Misha's in an invisible fence that cuts across a corner in the front flower bed. He figured out that the cars are tall enough that he doesn't get shocked. So he climbs over the hoods of the cars to bypass one corner, runs through another cord, then stands up at the front door because he's too tall to get shocked there.

I'm glad he doesn't (yet) know how to open doors, or trashcans.

That's too funny! Seems like the GSD is def. a smart dog!!

DH and I just laughed about it, we couldn't even get mad Smile

Wow...they sure do teach us a thing or two about underestimating them, lol! I cant imagine Rory being able to open doors, I would be so distressed.

Currently she can only open the latch on the front gate with her nose, roll her car window down if I dont put the child safety lock on and recently she as learned to unlock the car door but I'm pretty certain her paws will never allow her to actually open the handle to get out, lol.
