Does your vet call you to follow up ?

Every single time I've brought in an animal for illness or injury or if something has turned up that warrants meds in a regular visit - I receive a follow up call from that doctor.  I will see any of the 5 vets in the practice because they are all caring and thorough.  And if I call with a question, they will manage to make time for a phone consult some time that day.

They also send sympathy cards at a pet's passing with signatures of the whole staff and thank you cards and little gifts when I refer someone - just got a Blockbuster gift card last week.  More importantly, everyone I send there thanks me and stays there - even people who have to travel from across town or come in from the suburbs.  They are good, competent practitioners, offer some alternative therapies and thoughts, actually seem to know something about nutrition and most importantly, are compassionate.  They offered home euth for our 18 year old dog so we could spend one final day with her (a tech and doctor came out after they closed that day) and she could be in the comfort of her home.

It's clear they actually even remember my animals - for ill or good!  Both the vet techs and vets have commented on the last two visits that Pofi has matured - filled out and also has a much improved temperament in the office - they complimented him on how well he did!  And when I was trying to desensitize him after a particularly tough visit after a fairly significant wound inflicted by another dog (you would think they were trying to draw and quarter him with the fuss he put up and the shrieks that rang through the clinic), they were perfectly amenable when I'd just bring him in to get pets and treats and step on the scale or bring him along when one of the cats or Mia had an appt.

    Simply put, my vets rock.

Yes, my vet has always called or has a tech call to see how my dog is doing after a visit. (Other than an annual check up)  I have had to use an emergency vet twice and they notified my regular vet who then gave a call to me the next day.  I think it is a sign of a good veterinary office when one is called after non-routine things.

None of the vets we went to before ever called back. It was'nt until we started with our present one. After our lab was sewn up from tearing his skin on a thick branch, our vet called the next day to see how he was doing and said to feel free to call if we had any questions.I was very impressed.

Last time I called Coke's old vet, I got into an argument with the manager of the office. (A sorta "chain" veternarian clinic that has like 4 clinics...although they are so overyly priced.... think... an extra $30 bucks just to implant her chip! Not to mention the cost of the chip itself!)

I had an issue with an estimation for her spaying, hernia repair, and microchipping.... the original estimation was supposed to be good for 60 days, a week later, when I came in to sign the paper work, the price jumped another $50 extra bucks... I wanted to know why, and she basically asked me if I thought getting surgery was like getting a hair cut....because they had to charge what was appropriate... yeah... what a comparison.  Still couldnt tell me why the gaurantee price for 60 days and then the sudden price increase.... just the answer of what's appropriate...

This is after I had spent literally over a grand there just getting her routine check ups, shots, and kennel cough, coccidia, and giardia taken care of.

So on Tuesday coming up, she is due for her annual rabies and check up and goodies.

I found a new vet who uses a more "holistic" approach to veternarian care..... Whereas her old vet... I was lucky to get the same vet each visit.

The last time she's been to the vet was in February... so what.... 10 months ago?  So far Ive gotten at LEAST half a dozen post cards reminding me to make an appointment for Cokes.

They still havent, or refused to believe that when a client ask for a copy of a patient's medical records... it probably means theyre going else where!

I've also had problems with the rude receptionists there itself.  ie. When Cokes and I come out of the office, even though theyre about 4 people behind the desk looking idle... I'll come up to pay for the darn bill, and they rudely tell me to sit down until I'm called... uh.... yeah...

You people are so lucky to find good vets/care.

Hopefully this new vet/office will have much better bed side manners!

I was thinking more the other way around - that the vet that doesn't call is "less satisfactory" ..... so far I really like the new vet but I'm reserving final opinions for 6 months to see if Prancer's leg has any more issues esp since the new vet thinks its a luxating patella and/or tendon while the original (no call vet) thought it was a partial tear in the cruciate.    Seems to me that the original vet should have been able to feel if the patella was out of place (since Prancer was still "one leg up" when he saw her).   I'm driving myself nuts going in circles and chasing MY tail thinking about all this ! LOL

I use two different vets, one for my dog and 1 cat, and another for the other 3 kitties. Both called me to check on the cats when we went in for something not routine. When I brought Casey in for his first visit, it was just a regular "I just adopted my dog" check up. Nothing major, no tests or anything.

What vet is Prancer going to now?

I think you just have an awesome vet! I go to a place where there are about 4 vets working, but I always ask to see the same one. Anyway, he's very nice but overall I'd really like to change. The ladies in the front office are rude, i can hardly ever get an appointment on the day I need and they don't seem to really know what their doing.

I went in Saturday to check out why Chico is losing hair.. the vet took one look and said it's "allergies" ... he didn't even really check him out or ask any questions. He didn't explain much either.

But they don't call to confirm appointments, send anything when it's time for shots or call to ask how they are doing if something major happens. (Even when Chico had his surgery.) Even when I brought Chico to the vet once to get his drain tube removed, he had a start of infection and they told me it was nothing. A week later I took him back and sure enough, it was infected.. badly.

Point is, your vet is awesome.. I'd change in a second if I could.

Its a bit of a trek but the new doctors (one conventional, one TCVM) are at the Tarpon Animal Hosptial on Rt 19 in Tarpon Springs.   Its an integrated medicine practice so they do both Western and Eastern medicine.   She's seen both type of docs there;  I really like it.

One of the vets at the clinic we go to called after Kota went in for vomiting and diarrhea.  I was impressed and thankful that they did.  He was fine, so I hadn't called them, but it was nice of them to do that.

It's a nice touch and shows they care.

Our vet calls to follow up, but is the first vet I've had that does. I really appreciate the extra effort.

    • Gold Top Dog

wouldn't use one who didn't call.

Yes, Willow's vet's office calls the next day after a sick visit to see how she's doing.  She had two before this one that didn't. I left them for other reasons.  But, it's funny when you are new at this you don't always realize what you are missing.
