How are your dogs with strangers?

This new stage Sniper is going through got me wondering, how are all your dogs with people they don't know? Friendly, shy, aloof, aggressive?

Right now, Sniper is a bit nervous of strangers, but will warm up if the new person she meets is slow and careful with her during the first few minutes. After that, she is bound to lick them to death.

Jamison doesn't know the meaning of the word "stranger".  He loves everyone he meets, including people who come into the house to repair things.  Anyone walking up our sidewalk gets a big butt wagging, tail going crazy response.  I hope no one ever comes to do us harm because Jamison would just lick them to death.

Max doesn't have the word "stranger" in  his vocabulary. Big Smile All someone has to do is make eye contact with him and he's leaning up against their legs, licking them and waiting for an ear scratch.

Coke is fine, impressive really.  Ironically, he is a rescue, a re-homed one at that, and he's the most well-mannered dog I've ever met (and we walk shelter dogs, so I meet a LOT of dogs).  He's not overly excited or pushy, but his tail wags, he will give kisses, and he loves to be played with, pet, or even try to sit in their laps!  I'm so impressed with his being social yet respectful, I wish we'd adopted him a week before and I would've taken HIM to pet therapy training instead of Kenya!  On walks, he will sometimes pull towards a stranger he wants to meet, but he doesn't bark or lunge or anything rude like that.

Kenya....totally depends.  With kids, she is fine.  In general, she is an aloof dog, indifferent towards anyone but me.  That does not mean scared or aggressive, it just means she doesn't really care either way.  It's as if people are not even there.  There are certain people she really likes and others that make her a bit nervous.  If she is given a reason to trust, she will warm up to most women.  She loves my trainer and our club owner so much she will ignore me and go to them!  She also likes kids that aren't too loud.  When I first got her she sat next to my cousin and slept with her head in her lap.  I have one friend that she does not like b/c my friend is the type of person that gets way too excited, will run screaming at a dog, that kind of thing.  Kenya will duck and run from that!  With men, she generally prefers men that either ignore her or treat her like any other dog.  If a man tries to hard to win her affection, it makes her nervous.  She's done well with strange men on walks that just kneel down and let her approach first.  She also did really well with my co-worker who is a pretty big, loud guy and before I could even tell him she's a nervous dog, he scooped her up into his arms and rubbed her all over.  I thought for sure she would freak, but she loves him and follows him around at work.

    Stranger? What's that?

    Stranger? What's that?

Ditto for all my dogs. We had our first exception to that this weekend, when we walked by a woman hanging clothes on a line, and Luna barked at her/the clothes line. To be honest I am not sure which she was responding to, so we did some click and treat for being calm and not barking.

Cara and Mia LOVE people. All people. When we take them to the dog park, they socialize with the people. They don't give a hoot about the dogs. LOL

Jaia is aloof. He doesn't care for people other than us. B'asia is aloof as well, but a bit more reserved than Jaia.

Haha.  Rory sounds just like Jamison.  =)

Salem loves most people. There are a few types of people he is scared of. There is a woman at my office that is really high strung and she had him tucking his tail between his legs and running. It's strange because he normally really likes high pitched talking, but not from her. She was too excited for him she was running toward him screaming about how cute he was and how she just wanted to "eat him up". He apparently didn't want to be eaten, lol.

We have also met a few men on walks that he hasn't liked. He will just try to hide behind me or dh. Those men were large and loud so maybe that was it.

He loves children of all ages. He can't get enough of them! It doesn't matter if they are loud or rough, he just loves them.

He's been trained (by me) to ignore people unless given the go-ahead to approach.  With permission, he bounces around and begs for ear skritches ad belly rubs.  He loves everyone.

Prancer is also a rescue (she was found as a stray in Miami) and was in a home for a week before being returned to the rescue then coming home with me the same day of the return.  Yet she LOVES people .... whenever someone comes over she gets SO excited - I swear if she could talk she'd be saying "look Mommy - it's PEOPLE !!! can we keep 'em ?????".      Halloween was a real experience - she just adored coming to the door with me (I had a baby gate up in the doorway so she couldn't dash out) and greeting all the kids - the strange costumes didn't bother her one bit.   She likes other dogs but she doesn't get excited - its more a curiosity thing with them.    When we were in class she never played with the other dogs - she sniffed them and let them sniff her but if they wanted to play she went straight to the nearest human for a rub instead

Teenie is terrified of people, and generally takes at least an hour to warm up enough to willingly be petted by new people. Emma loves people. I've almost taught her to ignore people, when she's on lead. She will still end up all wiggly and goofy over kids. When she's released, she'll hop right in anybody's lap. She loves any kind of attention.

Pirate does well with most women (a product of meeting new girls at work with me) but he's not big on most men. He loves kids because they smell like FOOD. Pretty much he just ingnores them unless they are obnoxious and trying to tower over him. He doesn't like that at all.

Cherokee's rather aloof usually as long as they're talking to ME. If a stranger talks to HER, or heck, even LOOKS at her, she's all barks and growls. Sometimes she gets barky if someone's talking to me, but we've been working on that and she's gotten a lot better. Now..if someone TOUCHES her before she's comfortable, they're liable to lose a finger.

If I introduce them right, and the person does what I say, Cherokee's generally relatively fine with them with 5-10 minutes, and depending on the person, they might be her best friend in that time or just a few minutes longer.

The only person (including ME, btw) that she liked right off the bat, in the entire 8 years I've had her, is my now-brother-in-law. He's a large guy, 6'4", deepish voice, total IDIOT around dogs, but Cherokee flopped right down for a belly rub when he walked in. Weirdest day of my life, I swear. Big Smile
