Male or Female

    Male or Female

I'm planning on getting another dog.  I currently have a female husky and was planning on getting a female malamute, but I've come across a male malamute that I have interest in. I've never had a strong connection with male dogs before.  What would you recommend? Has anyone ever been in this situation before?

It probably depends on the temperament of your current dog.  I've seen many dogs at our shelter that are dog aggressive towards their own sex.  For example, we had a purebred female Akita surrendered b/c the idiot owners thought Akitas looked cool and were in WAY over their heads.  Anyway, the Akita was great with people and SOME male dogs, but if you even tried to walk a female dog past her kennel....wow!  Barking, lunging, teeth bared, etc.  But then meeting some male dogs, she was fine.

If you're not really sure, maybe you can call a behaviorist and have them help evaluate your dog and make a recommendation.

It depends on the individual dogs, of course, but well-accepted conventional wisdom is that opposite-sex pairs are most likely to be good pairings, and two females are least likely to get along well.  Many people also will tell you that fights between two females typically are more serious than fights between other pairings.

    So, I'd get the boy!

Same-sex aggression is not unusual in Malamutes. Malamutes in general are a "tougher" breed than Siberians and aggression is seen more often than in Siberians. If you want a Malamute I think a male would be your best bet.

I have a Samoyed and I prefer the boys. They are generally sweeter and more affectionate. Not sure if it's the same in Mals, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Ki gets along with all dogs male and female, as well as cats.  And the new dog would be a puppy.   I have read a lot about how some female mals don't get a long well with other females but it depends on the circumstances.

Based on other people's posts, by default, I'd go with a male, especially since the Mals seem to not be good a female-female pairs.  At our shelter, we rarely have two females of any breeds as kennel mates.  In fact, I can't think of a pair.  They are all male-female, or male-male where one male is less confident and doesn't mind the other being dominant.  A friend of mine has a pair of Mals and they are male-female, adopted as little puppies at different times, and she still has some problems with aggression (mainly food aggression).

I think that's a really good decision! [:)] Your current girl gets along with other females, but that doesn't mean that the girl you got would feel the same way. Another thing that happens with females is that they can get along for years, but if they get in a tiff one day they'll usually fight continously after that and have to be separated for life. Boys tend to get over things, but the girls hold a grudge forever. [;)]
