    In an ideal world....no mutts?

    So, we all agree
    1) irresponsible breeding is bad
    2) breeding mutts whether accidently or purposefully is bad

but...does that mean that in an ideal world, there would be no mixed breeds? That makes me rather sad...even though I agree with the majority here about breeding.

In an ideal world, there would only be enough dogs to fill the responsible homes. Probably so. No mutts. That would be a little sad, wouldn't it?

It depends on your idea of a "perfect world".  In mine, dogs would be bred for a purpose, herding, schutzhund, agility (the dogs that were not as adept at their purpose would go to pet homes).  If a mix outperformed the purebred, breed the mix.  Remember, we are talking about a world where there are no homeless dogs, so if you are breeding to create the best dog you can, it would almost be immoral to breed a purebred for a task when a mixie would outperform it.  Eventually you would create an entirely new breed for whatever purpose, and then you would begin producing purebreds out of that line.  If a mix or a dog of a different breed/line outperformed your line, you'd breed with the mix.  Mixes would eventually become breeds to which mixes that perform their task well would be added.  I think there would be mixes.  Then again, this is just my idea of what a perfect world would be like.  It will more than likely never happen and there's a chance my idea itself is flawed, but this is how I'd like to think it would work.

Hey... If this was a different world with no mutts than all we would have in the world would be wolves.[;)] Since they were the original ones anyway.[:D]

In a perfect world, there would be homes for random bred dogs (mutts happen when  respobsible breeders get just a bit careless (or someone gets careless for them) and there is more than one breed in the home too.

I would not mind mutts in any way shape or form,  I just want responsible ownership.  I hate that some communities count their euthenazia by the ton.
    • Gold Top Dog
If you follow that logic I'm dead.  Because I'm German, English, Irish, Welsch, Scot, and a bit of French.  A mutt.

Soooooo who are you going to tell that they can't date first -- that interrracial black/white couple?  Puerto Rican and gee whatever?

Don't think I'd make that mental jump -- sounds a bit to much like racism to me.  (Callie who avoids all breed threads always)

In a perfect world, there would be no irresonsibly bred dogs. All dogs would be bred for a good reason and with ethical, responisble breeding practices. I would have much much less of a problem with purposefully bred mutts if:

    • we didn't already have a massive mixed breed overpopulation problem
    • the mixes were better thought out (some of them are just massive genetic problems waiting to happen and combine two breeds who's drives are at cross-purposes to each other, such as a pug/beagle cross)
    • the breeders of these mixes used the same high standards and ethical practices that the very best purebred breeders use
    • Gold Top Dog
in the horse world, certain "mutts" are deliberately bred because they have been shown to consistently out-perform the purebreds or have better temperaments without impairing performance. If anyone ever clearly demonstrates that a particular mixed-breed in dogs was superior for some purpose, be it as a pet or a working dog, I have no problem with responsible mutt breeding. But it has to be responsible-- the parents must be shown to be the best of the best and pass all health and temperament tests.
I actually think as a safeguard against inbreeding that purebreds should have the occasional infusion of outside blood. This insistance on pure lineage is a genetic disaster.

This would be a wonderful problem to actually have. I've known some deliberately bred mixed working cattle dogs that were in no way as irresponsibly bred as the average purebred from a BYB. Is is right? Well lets just say all of the pups went to people who wanted working cattle dogs.

In a perfect world, senior dogs and dogs with health conditions would only be in shelters infrequently (owner dies type of thing) and for a short period of time, because there were many homes waiting for them--not because they are considered unadoptable and euthanized to make room for younger healthier dogs.

Almost  all people are Mutts , if you stop and think about it.  Everytime inbreeding is tried, all kinds of problems develope.

I don't actually agree 100% with OP.  That is with:

    2) breeding mutts whether accidently or purposefully is bad

I'm beginning to think that it is a bad thing that all the caring and responsible people out there hold back from breeding because of the overpopulation problem.  It leaves the market wide open for money grabbing, irresponsible, uncaring, ignorant idiots.... I wonder if more good people deciding to breed (even crossbreeds) responsibily  and ethically might squeeze the bybs and puppy mills out of the market and therefore positively impact the over population problem....?

One of the reasons I gave up breeding was because, I went through a personal change of moving into the animal rights arena, became vegetarian, and simply could not justify it anymore.
Another reason was how time consuming it became, and took more than the time I was able to put into it with working outside the home, which now, has changed....thank God.
The third and also a big reason was, even though I was very careful in placing the pups, in the end it bothered me greatly not knowing how and where they spend the rest of their lives.

Chuffy, the money hungry breeders don't give two hoots about their breeding stock, or what happens to the pup, health problems or anything for that matter, they want the money.....and for that reason alone will never stop breeding irresponsibly.

In my expierence the Mutts were the best pets!!!!!!!!  The pure breed were the difficult dogs.

In the perfect world all dogs and cats could have homes with loving families.

I think 99% of the average pet dog homes couldn't handle even the failed being bred for performance dog...I can barely handle an obedience-failed aussie.

I think the ideal world would be were every dog, mix or not, had a perfectly compatible owner...mabye your perfect match IS a shelter dog or a stray.
