Dogs on TV

    Dogs on TV

I was thinking of getting a few channels of digital TV and I can choose two or five, or whatever, and I wanted to get a show where I can see lots of shows about dogs and other animals, so I'm wondering which network any of you watch?  So far I'm thinking Animal Planet and National Geographic.  I'm leaning strongly toward Animal Planet.  Anyone else watch Animal Planet?  Do you enjoy it?  What sorts of shows does it typically have on?

My only complaint about Animal Planet is that they repeat everything to death.  Not just stuff from the current season, either.  I've seen episodes of Breed All About It from as far back as 1998 still being shown  (when we got AP).  The same with K9 To 5, and the AKC/Eukanuba Cup.  And I'm really getting tired of  seeing The Planets Funniest Animals when I channel surf on weekends.  :Within the last 2 weeks they even showed a couple of programs that had been on Discovery Channel and PBS years ago.  The one program was on PBS when Mick was a pup- 15 years ago.  Animal Planet has had some great programs that only seem to last a couple of seasons, then they try something new.  To be honest, as much as I like the channel, I don't watch it as much as I used to.

If you could I would get both.
Animal Planet is awesome....and National Geographic is great too.
We spend a lot of time as a family watching these channels as well as History and Discovery

I don't have it anymore, but when I did, Animal Planet was one of my favorite channels! Although micksmom is correct about repeat programming, I don't mind all that much and will sometimes even watch shows twice. Not even sure if they still have the shows on when I was watching it...Growing up ______, K9to5, A Pet Story, etc. Love that channel. Nat'l Geographic is great too, but AP is all animals all the time, if that is what you want.

    I love both!

NG gives you the Dog Whisperer (always entertaining!) and some really cool shows about various creatures (sharks, snakes, spiders, etc).  They'll have something like "The Top Ten Deadliest".  Really great channel in general though, beyond animal shows..

AP's shows are more geared toward companion animals and it seems like there is always something good on.  I love K9-5 which is a show about working dogs.  They introduce you to a dog and tell you all about his job.  Everything from SAR dogs to geese chasers on golf courses!  Very cute and although they do repeat, I'm happy to watch them again.  They also have Emergency Vets and Animal Cops (in various cities)  I confess that I don't watch either of these cause I'm just too WEAK - but other people seem to love them.

I would get both channels if you could - otherwise it seems like AP is best for you (based on your wanting lots of shows about dogs)

Animal Planet is good sometimes, but yeah, they do play a lot of the same shows.  Planet's Funniest Videos is on way too much.  If you've never had Animal Planet before, though, everything will be new to you, so it's ok.  [:)]
Discovery channel has some good nature/animal-related programming, but not necessarily dog-oriented.
PBS also has a lot of good programs about nature & animals.  But, I think the only place you're really going to find shows about dogs is on Animal Planet.  I really like the show Emergency Vets...haven't seen any new episodes in a while...anybody know whatever happened to that?

I understand you are asking from the point of view of what you want to watch, but what does your DOG want to watch?

Sofie watches TV. When I had Dish TV and I had to leave her at home, (rare, but it happened), I'd always leave Animal Planet on for her. I know it made things less boring for her.

PBS is a good choice too, they often have really great programs about animals, and I love most of their other programming, too. Sofia watched an entire show about The Falling Lakes in Croatia. It was an amazing show! There were wolves, wild swine, otters, lynx, wild cats, all sorts of really neat animals and she watched the entire thing. She got pretty interested in the swine, going up to the TV to sniff them!

Animal Planet has the dog shows, which we both enjoyed watching.

I agree with Jean and Sofia.

To you it will be new and you will not mind the constant repeat. I don't mind it myself and watch it 24/7. I get teased a lot in my home cause I have been told there are other channels to chose from. My reply is simple. Oh there are? What a waste. LOL

Discovery and NG are also wonderful too.

Thanks for the information guys.  I would like to get both, but if I can only get one (since I might just be getting the deal where I get my choice of two channels and DH would probably like to have one, too[:)]) I'll probably get animal planet.

As far as what Tojo likes to watch, the only TV I've ever seen him watch was once I was watching a national geographic documentary on zebras and he mostly slept through it but he perked up every time a lion or hyena was taking down a zebra, hehe.  I think he was visualizing it was him!

I really like some of the shows on AP, but I find that they advertise shows that are only on the US AP, not the Canuckyland version.  It's frustrating!  I really like the British veterinary shows (Vets In Practise) and the Canadian vet shows.  I think it's really interesting ... although DH doesn't like them on when we're eating dinner. [:D]

I agree that "Funniest Animals" is on A LOT.  Oh - and that Snakemaster show too.  *sigh*  I LOVE that the whole Sunday morning on Life Network is all dog shows!!  Yippeee!! Pot of coffee ... Timbits ... Dog shows... Does it get any better?? [:)]
