You did the right thing Okie, as DumDog stated, the dog is the victim here, created by an ignorant owner.  You shouldn't feel bad, as you did not create the situation, it was forced upon you.  You did right by the dog.

The biggest shame is that folks that own dogs such as these will go on to get another, creating another victim of ignorance that would in better circumstances be a wonderful companion for many years.  So sad, and happens all too often.

I feel bad . Ive never hit a dog before so it was a little unsettling to me. It made me remember back to when I was 10 or so and I used to play with the dead dogs mother before the owner had passed away. At one point in time these where friendly dogs but the more puppys they had the more trouble started.=( The owner wouldnt fix his two females and let them breed litter after litter only to turn them out. My mom once offered to PAY to get them fixed so the poor girls could get a break from breeding. He turned her down tho, Silly goose.

i knew a situation like that once when i was in high school and working on a ranch.. down the road from me there was this ANCIENT stooped over old lady and an enormous pack of dogs.. she lived right up by the edge of the road, which was a very curvy, narrow road, so when you drove down it you had to slow down, at which point your car was suddenly surrounded by a dozen or more barking and snarling dogs. and late at night you could hear these dogs in full cry and chasing God only knows what.. which was creepy to me (dunno if you've ever heard or read about the Wild Hunt or the Horned King) my boss would go visit her every now and then to take her fire wood... he told me that the only thing she fed this pack of dogs was corn bread that she baked herself.... no wonder they were hunting at night! FINALLY the local ACO came out and told her to either pen them all up or get rid of them.. so she penned them up! yep.. some local boys came out and built her a large kennel and she put all the dogs in it.. but she left the main breeder out - a big mastiffy looking brindle girl - if you had seen this old woman you wouldnt expect her to be able to control THAT many dogs.... but she did! i dont know if she is still alive or what ever happened to her dogs.. probably the same thing thats happened to these dogs... still running wild and driving the neighbours crazy..
