    Hey Luvntzus,

My Sammy is a 12 lb Shih Tzu, and he LOVES to snuggle!  He was the runt of the litter; we chose him and his brother Willie.  Willie is loving and sweet, but like Gingerbread, he is independent and unless he is very sleepy, he will chosse to lay on the sofa or maybe "next" to you on a pillow.  Sammy went to sleep in my arms on Saturday while I was sitting in a chair having a conversation with a guest in our home.

So, like people, some like to be touched more than others!  As you know, Shih-Tzus are a wonderful breed and I think they are the PERFECT companion dog!  (I may be a bit biased though!)[;)]

Each dog is different. My Shih Tzu is a great lap dog when she wants to be on my lap. She loves to be on a pillow on the floor and have us with her there. Cats cannot be counted on for sure. Each cat is VERY diff. Shih Tzu's are one of the few dogs to be bred for companionship only, so that is still a good doggy for cuddles. Many dogs love the lap and some don't.

Thanks tzumommy for your reply! I really do LOVE Shih Tzus. The only thing I was thinking is that most of them would be independent like Gingerbread. I guess I just have to find one that will be more into being held... So problem solved with one post. That's great!

Edited to add Sally we were both posting at the same time. Gingerbread is like Sally- he does sit on my lap, but only when the mood strikes him. With him it's usually once or twice a day.

What about a maltese?  My sister's maltese LOVES to be held.  He is always in the arms.  He loves to cuddle and play and is 10 lbs.  He gets along with all small dogs.  We joke around and say he is a baby trapped in a dog's body.

My friend has a beautiful, blue Chihuahua. He weighs 4 pounds, has a smooth coat (which sheds a bit, but geez... how much can a 4 pound dog shed?), and is a perfect lap dog. He lives with three large dogs, and is very "stable". He's well trained, affectionate, and stands up for himself. He's a very nice little dog. He's fairly well bred, we think. Very typey, but he's a rescue, and she doesn't know his lines.

Teenie's a fantastic lap dog, but... she's old. Dachshunds are very active dogs. Outside, she's a wild child. Inside, all she wants is snuggles.

I babysat a Yorkie for a month, once, and he was a great lap dog, too, at only 6 months old. Very, very adorable, no less.

Zoey is a great lap dog.  It is her favorite place to be.  She is also a great dog.  Not barky, snippy, very pretty little girl and she does not shed anymore than yorkie's, maltese or other breeds that have been deemed no shed.

I think that honestly *most* of the toys, taken as a breed rather thna individual dogs, will fit this need- since they were developed for companionship. I think your best bet will be to find an adult dog with an established personality who is very lovey, whether that's a shih tzu or another breed.

Well, of course I'm a bit biased, but a Papillon might be a good bet :) I joke that mine is a "cat dog" because he loves curling up in places (including laps) and falling asleep. He's also not happy at night unless he is sleeping while physically touching some part of my body. He's also quite quiet unless someone comes to the door.

I have 2 dachshund pups that are total goof balls outside, but as soon as we get inside they are lap dogs.  They can lay in my lap for hours & be perfectly content.  With that being said, dachshunds are not for everyone.  They need lots of socialization, & they harbor a kind of "what's in it for me" attitude about training.  Generally, they need to be one level dogs (not allowed to jump up & down on things) due to the possibility of spinal injuries.  But, it's really easy to pick them up for lap time.

My 2 Shih Tzu's are lap dogs.  As soon as I sit down, 1 of them is on my lap. At night, one sleeps by my head, and 1 by my feet.

I've yet to hear of a dachshund that will not choose to snuggle with you.  Like Jennie said, they can be active outside, and do some zoomies inside but overall, on a cold day, Zoe has no problems cuddling 23 hours of the day :).

My mom's long haired chihuahua is a wonderful lap dog. She latches on to every visitor to the house, and has always loved people. She is from a good breeder, and is very stable and intelligent. House training her was a breeze, and we didn't even know what we were doing. She only barks when someone comes to the door, and it stops immediately when the person says hi and pets her.

I guess with chi's I would stress finding a good breeder and meeting the parents. Now that certain celebrities have made chis more popular, bad breeding has wrecked havoc on their temperaments.

My dachshund is named Zoe too!  She is a total snugglebug and lap dog. The minute I sit on the couch she is in my lap and will not MOVE (unless she hears DH in the kitchen and thinks that food will be appearing, lol).  She will never sit anywhere by herself if she has the option of sitting on a lap.  Even the people who work at the doggy day care she goes to tell me that out of all the dogs, she is the most loving.  They tell me they take turns holding her because she loves to be held.  Like others have said, though, she is very active outside and loves to go for regular walks or even runs, and she will start misbehaving if she doesn't get her excersise.
