    Dog DNA Test

There was something on our news tonight about a MD company that can do a dog dna test that can tell what breeds your dog is and about some illnesses etc.  It can help them figure out what is wrong with the dog and esp. if certain diseases are prevalent in certain breeds, etc.  I am trying to find an online link but I don't see one.

So is it only for identifying whether your dog is a purebred "X", or will it let you know what various breeds a mix is?
    • Gold Top Dog
I'm not sure - they didn't answer that for me.  I ask a question about whether a dog was multiple breeds and what if one was something not on their list - would they tell you something generic like "hound" but not specific or what would they do.

I'm not sure I want to investigate further, since it's $65, but they got back to me quickly - within a few hours - if anyone wants to email them for more information

That sounds so tempting but I wonder how they do it?

What if you have say a BC imported from anouther country then it's bloodline will not follow the same as american dogs, that would seem to make the whole system wrong. They clame it to be a DNA test so if your dog doesn't fit into their list but still is part "x" breed then it might not catch that.  I don't really understand how they can be accurate with the test and for only $65!

They can only test for the breeds listed. So they would find that Sofia is a husky, when she's Norwegian Elkhound and coyote, too. Maybe they'll tell me she's part basenji. (She's so quiet sometimes I wonder...) [8D]

I contacted that company and here is what they told me:

That's funny, because when I wrote them, asking about what genetic tools they use, what markers they use to make that determination, and why only a fraction of the available breeds can be done.....I got no reply...........

I have since heard from them, and they have provided me a wealth of information regarding the genetics and the testing behind their product. I will be looking into it in more depth and it appears to be quite interesting.

I would do it in a heartbeat if kelpies were one of the breeds, because I really think Cherokee is at least part kelpie. Although I guess I could do it and find out that she's NOT lab/chow, which is what I've called her for 7 1/2 years, and still wonder about (she really looks like a chow sometimes!). Maybe soon they'll have kelpies (yeah right, but one can hope..), and then I'll do it.

So is there any update on this DNA thing.  Has anyone done it with this, or any other company? It seems to be the big gossip at the dog park but nobody knows what sort of results you really get.  For example if I think my dog is a German shepard and Manchester Terrier among other things, if this is not one of the breeds listed it doesn't sound like the test is going to tell me anything.

I had heard about this on the CBS morning show a while back, they said if you wait (I forget until when, approx.), but they said since it is new, they have a small list of breeds, and if you wait, the list will have more varieties added.

I would love to do this but the dogs I think Harley is isnt even on the list.

I saw a Coton de Tulear (sp?) while we were traveling and he looked just like her but with longer hair (his was to the ground)! Tail was exactly the same, height and frame were the same, all white and everything.
