some winners at the dogpark today, wow.

So when I got to the dog park today, there was only one other dog there, a yellow lab who looked to be about 5 months old.

Now, many of us have some pretty fundamental disagreements about dog training, but I think we can all agree on one thing: you cannot train a good recall if you punish your dog every time she comes to you. Yet, this is exactly what this dog's owners were attempting.

When I got there, of course my dogs ran up to her and they all started playing, and she was playing puppy-style. My dogs are very tolerant, especially of pups, so I made it clear that her silly playing was just fine with them. But they started trying to recall her. Just yelling, "Bella! Bella! Bella! Bella! BELLA!!!" Okay, there's  mistake #1. Issue a command one time (and the dog's name is a command? what's up with that?), not over and over and over so it just becomes so much background noise. The guy says to me, "We're trying to train her to recall with distractions." And I was like, "Wellll, it looks like she needs more training without still." because this dog was clearly not in any way shape or form recalling. And they had no way to enforce the recall because it's a dog park and the dogs are off leash.

Okay so let's recap. 5 month old puppy lab, just for the first time meeting two playful adult dogs, and now is the time you want to practice recall with distractions? Now? Really?

    But wait, there's more.

So the woman starts chasing Bella around, yelling "Bella! BELLA! YOU LISTEN TO ME! Bella! YOU LISTEN! BELLA!!!" And Bella is totally not paying any attention at all because, remember the two brand new adult dogs? Still there. Still playing. And I'm sorry I'm not going to recall my dogs from a perfectly safe and fun play session because someone else has chosen an incredibly crappy time to try this whole recall with distractions biz.  It's a dog park. Dogs play here. And frankly the woman was getting so angry I kind of wanted the dog to get as much playing in as possible because I had a feeling that was going to come to an end very soon.

So finally Conrad and Marlowe spin off and are playing with each other, the woman catches up to Bella and smacks her! Hard! On the behind! So of course, Bella, having a sense of self-preservation, runs off again and this woman is about to blow her stack at this poor puppy. And I'm standing there watching this whole thing saying "She's not going to come to you if you punish her when she does! She doesn't understand what you want! You're punishing her for coming!!!" And these people are not listening to me at all. The woman is like speaking entire paragraphs to this dog about how she WILL obey and she WILL come and she WILL listen. Why do people not realize that DOGS DO NOT SPEAK ENGLISH!?!?

So finally, they snag poor Bella (who by the way is just so cute I could eat her up), put her on her leash, which is of course a flexi, the Official Leash of Stupid Dog Owners everywhere (not saying all people with flexis are stupid, but I have noticed that all stupid people have flexis). And then they proceed to remove Bella to the center of the park--the dog park--and then just stand there. Yelling at her as she's expressing an interest in playing some more. So I recall my dogs every time they get near her because I don't want them to get her in trouble now that I've seen what these people do to their dog when she "disobeys" (which I'm going to put in quotes because to obey a command a dog has to actually understand what the command is and means). In the fenced area of the dog park, Conrad and Marlowe have a 100% recall at this point and I had also brought the whistle to give a few trials of our Brand New Whistle Recall (tm). I made a huge display of loving them up every time they recalled just so Bella's people could see that that's how you get a dog to come to you every time.

These winners stood out in the middle of the dog park for a good five minutes, with their puppy on a leash, "disciplining" her every time she did something wrong, which of course, she had no idea of. They didn't employ any commands or give her any incompatible behaviors. Just "NO!!! BELLA! YOU LISTEN!!!" every time she did something they didn't like.

It was awful and disgusting. I was glad when they left but I seriously wanted to rescue little Bella. Her behavior around them, especially the woman, made it pretty clear that she has been hit many times. Once the woman got near her in her attempts to "catch" her, Bella would crouch low and get ready for a blow and then as soon as possible run as far away as possible again. Classic behavior of a dog being mis-trained with punishment (not saying you can't train a dog with punishment properly though I personally prefer not to, but you can seriously MIS-train a dog with punishment).

I have to say that I was unprepared for the whole scene. In general, the denizens of our dog park are pretty dog-savvy and I rarely if ever really see someone screwing their dog's training up royally. I dunno, what would you all have done? I really did try to tell them that they were punishing their dog for coming and that that won't work, and also that they probably need to do more training with fewer distractions first. But they completley acted like I wasn't even there.

Well, since I have not gotten to the "recall" part of Ella's training, and I am not allowed to bring her to dog parks because she's a pit bull, I don't know what I would have done.
I think you set the best example you could have.

And the incident would have made me sad.
I cannot stand to see dogs mistreated, it breaks my heart.

Honestly, some people shouldn't own dogs, and I HATE saying that because I've been the less than perfect dog owner, but I would NEVER mstreat my dog like that.

I would have told them how to train their dog right (just like you did). Then if they weren't listening tomy advice I would bend down and call Bella and if she came (which she probably would) I would make a big deal about it and praise her so the owners might actaually listen to your advice (which by the way is totally what I have always done!). If they kept Punishing her for ''disobeying'' I would tell them they need to stop because if the dog is so scared of them you can phsically tell you would call the local animal shelter. If they hauled off and smacked her again I would have taken my cell phone and called the animal shelter and reported them immediatly!

Oy! That would ruin my whole day! I'll bet even Marlowe and Conrad were probably upset with the crazy lady. I never did figure out what is going the people's head's when they punish a dog for letting you catch it.

Once the woman got near her in her attempts to "catch" her, Bella would crouch low and get ready for a blow and then as soon as possible run as far away as possible again. Classic behavior of a dog being mis-trained with punishment

Lucy acted just like that when I first got her. I still remember the look on her face when I walked up to her and took her leash after the first time she got loose. She was cowering down on the ground and didn't even want to take the cookie I was trying to give her for letting me pick up the leash!

I still don't have perfect recall on her but that's totally my fault. I think my brain froze today when I let the dogs out because I put Blackhawk on the tie-out and let Lucy go loose. Big DUH! Lucy took off and I went inside to grab my coat and a greenie (Lucy's equivalent of heroin) Before I could get my gloves on she was back in the house munching her prize! Much better than the 20 minutes I spent following her around the neighborhood the first time she got loose. The 2º high today probably didn't hurt, either!
    • Gold Top Dog
Hmmm. I wonder if you see them again if they would let you *show* them how you trained Marlowe & Conrad. Bring some extra cookies and ask them if they would like some help. Maybe say something like "I learned this in an obedience class and it really helped us!" They were probably so would up about yelling at her they didn't listen to your advice.

I can already imagine where the poor puppy is going to be in a few months....maybe...shelter..by any chance???

Just reading this pisses me off.

In a few months Bella can expect to spend the rest of her life chained in her back yard.

    Pisses.  Me.  Off.

    Oooh, poor little Bella.

I've been to the dog park a couple times and seen people inappropriately yelling at/hitting their dogs.  It's really awful.  But there's not much you can do if people don't want to reconsider their methods.   It's like giving people parenting advice -- lots of people really don't want to hear it and when that's the case it doesn't accomplish anything by trying to help them.  I think you did the best you could by trying to set a good example.

It makes me so mad when people abandon dogs at the shelter, but then you see something like that and you wonder -- what kind of life did the poor thing have before?

At least she gets to go to the park and play, instead of being tied up outside 24/7.

Poor pup.  You have to wonder about someone who would try to work on training at a dog park. [:@] To me, that's sort of like taking your kid to Disneyland and expecting him to spend the day working on his book report.

Hmmm I'm afraid I'm a bit more mouthy than that[:D] I would have said a bit more I'm afraid, guess it's my old age that has made me that way, I can not tolerate a dog being smacked and man I'd have told her that very clearly, but of course, idiot that she way, she probably would not have gotten it anyway, that poor poor dog.

I had a similar experience at the park a few week ago. Only this woman was wasn't abusive to her dog. She still did EVERYTHING wrong like the person in your story.

Our park has 2 sections, an open area and a wooded area. I frequent the wooded portion because the people who have zero control over their dogs tend to avoid it. On this occasion, the person I was with wanted to go up top for a few minutes before we left. I knew it was probably a bad idea, but we went, against my better judgment . There was one woman up there with her dog, and we had been able to hear her ever since she showed up. It sounded like: "squeaksqeaksqueak....squeeak, squeak!" Constant talking. I don't know how she managed to take breaths in between.
When we got up there we could hear it better, and it sounded like this: "Brutus!Brutus...Brutus no. Brutus bad.BRUTUS! Brutus.Brutus come.Brutus COME!Brutus?" in the most high pitched, irritating voice you could imagine. As would expect, Brutus was running around crazy paying absolutely NO attention to his owner. He was a nice enough dog, a shepherd mix of about 7 months, but he had no training or manners whatsoever. He ran from dog to dog offending them to the point of being snarled at. All the while his clueless owner squeaked on meaninglessly.

Now, one of my dogs has little tolerance for rude puppies. He kept grumbling at Brutus. Brutus kept body slamming him and bumping into him. I could tell he was getting close to the edge of his tolerance, so I went to tell my friend I had to leave. On the way, Brutus slammed into my dog again. My dog turned around in full snarl and roared at him. Well, as soon as those teeth came out, This woman screamed at the top of her lungs! "AAIEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!" Right in my ear. Now, as she's SCREAMING right in my ear, she's standing there, hands at her side between me and my dog so I can't reach him, and Brutus is starting to give crap back at my dog. Finally, I've had enough, "Stop..." She can't hear me over herself. "Just stop..." Still can't hear me. "STOP SCREAMING!" Finally, she hears me! She turns to me and says, "Uh, EXCUSE ME?!?!" As soon as she stops screaming the dogs stop freaking out, of course. I finally reach down, take my dog by the collar and say to her, very calmly, "Stop screaming. When you scream, you excite them. You're getting them all fired up and causing them to fight. Try and stay calm." I don't even think I finished that sentence before she was off chasing Brutus again. Argh! So frustrating. I leashed my dog, collected my other two and headed for the gate. Between there and the gate, Brutus almost got in a fight with another dog.

As we got inside the double gate, Brutus rushed over there and started to bark at us, as he had been doing to every dog in the gate so far that day. Well, here comes squeaky again. As she squeaks at him, he barks more. She tries to control him and he pulls her over! She's on her back screaming, still holding his collar! She finally rights herself and starts trying to talk to me, "Oh Brutus!Look at t he beautiful doggies!Three? How can you manage three? You're out-numbered by dogs!Brutus!" Blah blah blah... She was a nice enough lady, and I felt really bad afterwards for ignoring her. But I could hardly think straight at this point. The ten straight minutes of squeaking had melted my brain! I can't even imagine what the dogs felt like! They were visibly affected. One wasn't right for the rest of the day. Poor, Poor Brutus! Although at least he's become very good at shutting the noise out!

This lady was well meaning, but she was the worst candidate for a dog owner. I don't know if Brutus even knew his name. He was absolutely wild. I'm certain he'll be in the shelter within months. So very sad. If this poor lady only knew better. She was a nice lady, Brutus could be a really nice dog in the right hands. With a little education, everything would be fine. It's so frustrating to watch humans screw up perfectly good dogs.

She didn't really seem open to, or capable of listening. At least not to me. I wouldn't know where to begin anyways! Sigh.

Cressida, I too, saw a golden named "Bella" that was being trained in the exact same way, also at a dog park.  But this was at least a year ago.  It's the most horrendous thing to watch, the guy doing the "calling" and "disciplining" also had his little kid there.  This was a park with probably 10 other dogs, some were other puppies.

I can't stand to see it.  I kept trying to tell the guy but he's had dogs "all my life and I've never had a problem training them this way."  So why bother?

I'm just sorry that there are more Bellas out there.

It is sad to think that these people will some how blame poor Bella for the fact that they are the ones that were incpomadent owners and bad at training there dog. She will probobly wind up in a pound some where because of there stupidity!
