I got the surprise of my life this morning...

I got the surprise of my life this morning...

My significant other, Mr "I'm Not A Dog Person" severely allergic to dogs drag racing redneck informed me this morning that, when Nixon is gone, he wants another Irish Setter. "They're fun" he says. Yikes! Man, my arm sure hurts from being twisted. LOL! The search is on for the killer Irish Setter puppy now. I'm researching breeders and genetics right now and will start talking to people when the shows start up this spring. I've been in this game long enough to know it will probably take me a couple of years to find the perfect one. I couldn't believe it! Nixon is 11 years old and is really starting to show signs of his age. He's stone cold deaf and his spine is showing signs of arthritis. But he's still a freaking character and we love him dearly. I've been able to train him with hand signals - he's such a good boy. And he's still a lunatic at the dog park. LOL! I run him with Stormy because she's the least likely to lead him into another zip code. If I call her, she comes right to me and he follows.

On a similar note - another HUGE surprise... Amber is TRAINABLE! I've had to sneak up on her so she didn't know she was being trained, but she obeys sit and down (not a small feat for a Saluki!) and in a relatively short period of time. I'm so excited about the prospect of having an agility Saluki, which is what I'm working toward. It looks like Amber, the one that I wouldn't have given a prayer's chance in hell of being trainable, is going to be more than an eye candy breed Champion. [sm=lol.gif]

Wow! That's great! I'm hoping my DH will come around to the idea of another dog when our Dal is gone. I'm sure he will... eventually!

And congratulations on Amber! I'll bet it will be fun to do agility. And it's definitely not impossible. There's a lady in my state that has an Ibizan and two Borzois that she does obediance, agility and even some herding with! [linkhttp://www.iowadogtrainer.com/tonjasdogs.html]Tonja's Dogs[/link]

Good for you!  There was (still is?) a saluki doing agility by the name of ???'s Just Puzzle It Out - call name Puzzle.  Love that name.  Be sure to join the Sighthound agility list - it's a yahoo group.  I've gotten so much use out of it and it's not too high volume.

On another note, there's an Irish Setter in my area that does agility.  (Keagen or Teagen, I get confused which)  If you watch the Invitational on Animal Planet, (Feb 11, I think) and see an Irish there, that's him!  He made it to the finals!!!!  Him and the Boston Terrier are both "neighbors".  And the owners of both of these dogs are super, super people.

I love Puzzle! I visit Puzzle's website often for updates. The woman that is chair for the agility competition at this year's National in Kentucky has been e-mailing back and forth with me - I'm donating a painting for their raffle and she's really been a wealth of knowledge and inspiration. Her handle is agilesaluki. LOL!

I believe the Irish you're talking about is Keghan. I could be wrong. And I'm willing to bet that the Irish puppy that I end up with will come from your neck of the woods. There's a woman out here that has two Irish females from a big breeder in your area that I absolutely LOVE! They're beautiful and I love their temperments. The breeder has been in Irish for many, many years. I wasn't impressed with her dogs when she was just getting started but she's done some things that I really like. I've been paying attention, just didn't want to get too involved because I didn't think I would ever be looking for an Irish puppy again. Funny how that happens, no? LOL!

Okay.  I was calling him one name; it was the other, but Carole said his littermate was whatever I was calling him.  She also has a young (10 months?) Irish.  Carole is a lovely agility handler.

I also emailed you a pic of  my last project.  Did you get it?  (I think I have, or had, 2 different email addy's for you.)

Deb, I hate to tell you, but my uncle's Irish Setter lived to be 17.  You may be getting Nixon a playmate!

LOL Spiritdogs! His grandma Sparkles lived to 15. Nixon has had health problems most of his life. His biggest problem right now is an enlarged prostate gland and his kidney function is a lot less whippy than we'd like, most likely due to all the crap he's been on most of his life for allergies. Did I tell you I'm going to be quite careful where the next Irish puppy comes from? Poor Nixon, I'm surprised he's made it this far. We're watching the prostate now for cancer. With his compromised kidney function and history of allergic reactions to just about everything, including general anesthesia and anti-inflammatories, if he did develop prostate cancer, that would do it. My vet doesn't think he'd make it through surgery. Nick is probably the BEST dog I've ever had with baby puppies. He's raised a whole herd of Salukis. LOL! So getting him a playmate may not be all that bad.

Agilebasenji - send it again. I didn't have internet service for quite some time due to back-to-back ice storms that knocked the phone and everything else down.
