Rymadil?

    Rymadil?

The vet gave Pirate a week's worth of Rymadil when we had his dewclaws off on Monday. He's been taking 12.5 mg twice a day. He's been fine up until today. He didn't eat breakfast or dinner today. I searched back through other posts and read about how Rymadil can be dangerous. If he doesn't eat his breakfast tomorrow, should I call the vet? (Their office is open on Saturday, so it's not hard to contact them.) He threw up a small amount of food/bile today around 4pm-ish, which is why I am concerned about the not eating.

Also, come to think of it, while we were walking today, he stumbled and fell and rolled over onto his back, like for a belly rub.

Stop the Rimadyl....and have the dog checked by a vet

Rimadyl is very very hard on the liver .. I would surely give no more of it ... and honestly, yes -- if he doesn't eat in the morning I'd ask for a blood panel to be done.

Be careful tho -- most vets will NOT admit if they shouldn't have given a dog a certain drug like that -- they're going to tell you how 'safe' it is.

Honestly I would make him a bit of chammomile tea tonight -- use a baby's syringe and squirt some in his mouth - it should help settle his stomach.  And try to get him to eat in the morning -- give him something tempting -- like lamb baby food & rice or similar.  something bland but yummy.

I agree stopping the Rimadyl & that most vets will not admit the med is the cause. My dog has had six long months of still reoccurring problems from being on Rimadyl for only 3 days. I'm not saying your dog will fair the same, I'm just giving you an idea of how serious this drugs effects are.

I have stopped the rymadil. I talked to the vet this morning and he said to stop the rymadil all together, which was already my plan, and to go with a bland diet for the next 24 hours (boiled chicken and rice). I did get him to eat a little rice with some kibble and warm water last night.

He's still lethargic, usually he loves to walk in the rain, and it was raining here this morning and he just plodded along next to me.

We are going to the vet Monday for a bandage change, I will definetly make it known about the rymadil.

He had a blood panel done last Monday before the sugery. Should I insist on another, if he isn't himself by then?

    And thanks guys.

I would do a blood panel at least for peace of mind. My previous dog was on/off Rimadyl for a little while and it wreaked havoc with her tummy - and she didn't take it much (for HD). She ended up with liver disease in her later years and I really didn't give her much of that nasty stuff.

The bland diet sounds good. I hope it helps your boy feel better soon.
Sorry he wasn't able to enjoy the rain, winters not over yet though... Next storm. :)

We lost our first dog, Aggie from AIHD (blood disorder). The AIHD can be a side effect of the Rimadyl, which of course our vet never told us that at the time it was prescribed. After she died we learned that AIHD is a potential complication from the drug. If I had known we would have tried something else for her arthritus.

If I'm not mistaken AIHD (what they used to call auto-immune hemolytic disorder) is now called IMHA (Immune mediated hemolytic anemia) with a few minor differences.  IMHA is what Billy has had.  There are many, many causes --from vaccines to antibiotics and every single pharmaceutical in between.

But Mookies Mom raises an excellent point -- that ANY drug that causes such a rapid and discernable problem is not a good thing for that dog and you just plain can't be too careful.

I would CERTAINLY ask for a blood panel MONDAY.  Fast -- don't wait, and don't just wait to see if it passes.

You honestly might want to simply treat for an ulcer -- and I've posted this recipe elsewhere here - it's totally benign and it won't hurt and it may help 'heal' Pirate's tummy distress.

1 -- half a cup of boiling water.
2 -- add 1 rounded tsp. of ground slippery elm
    3 -- let cool totally
    4 -- add 1/8 c. + 2 tablespoons of aloe juice
    5 -- add 10 drops of chlorophyll
6 -- Add 2-3 capsules (open the caps) of acidolpholus

The slippery elm, aloe, chlorophyll and acidolpholus are all health store items.  Ask them for the best tasting one they have -- aloe can be kind of bitter
